Sony's Cheaper, Smaller Blu-Ray Player

Are you still trying to decide between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD? I am. I have both technologies in the form of video game consoles, and it's still difficult to choose one format over the other. I think most consumers are playing it smart by waiting to see which of the two technologies prevails, as well as waiting for prices of hardware to drop. Sony is hoping to tip the scales a bit with the release of the BDP-S300, a smaller, cheaper Blu-Ray player we might see in stores this summer.

According to the Associated Press, the smaller model has all the same features as its predecessor, plus CD playback, yet the cost is expected to be around $600. But at that price, why not just buy a Playstation 3, which is between $499-$599? The article also mentions that "retail data from Neilsen VideoScan showed Blu-ray discs outselling HD-DVDs by three to one this year." I somehow find that hard to believe when HD-DVD players are outselling Blu-Ray players, and existing Xbox 360 users can purchase an HD-DVD drive for under $200. In order for Sony to make any advancement in this format war, they'll have to drop the price a lot lower than $500, especially when they're competing against their own PS3 pricing. Which format have you chosen? Or are you still waiting to decide?

I bought an OPPO DV-981HD(Mountain View, CA)upconverting DVD player - up coverts to 1080P for $229. To go with my Panasonic 42" plasma. The performance is simply spectacular! Why buy an HD or Blu-ray, when you can watch all existing DVDs in 1080p w/ the OPPO. This is a long winded answer to say that I will wait for a long time for the HD/Blu-ray standards war to settle, and enjoy my movies while I wait.

I paid $1400 for my first Beta VCR. Almost $1000 for my first DVD player. I will wait until there is only 1 format and the price comes down. Plus my HDTV does not have HDMI.

I myself bought an upscaling DVD player, goes to 1080i. My TV Sony SXRD goes to 1080i. My DVDs look sharp & crisp compared to my old player. I did a test at my local Bestbuy, we took Pirates 2 in blu-ray (1080p) and Pirates 2 standard (upscaler DVD 1080i) and played them on the same tvs side by side. Test TV was a JVC Hi-dila 50" (1080P). Let me say, the blu-ray was clear, but you know what was funny, the upscaling DVD player was very close in clearity ...so close that $70 for the upscaling DVD player made sense. Who needs $600-$1200 HD/blu-ray DVD player. Not to mention if you own a PS3 or XBOX360 with the HD drive, those upscale standard DVDs anyway, so why buy your DVD collection all over again? oh well Cheers

An Identical war of formats, BETA and VHS tapes. BETA was far better than VHS,as is BLU-RAY far better. but VHS was cheaper...VHS won. I always wait for the winner, before I spend my money.
