Your Trash is Another Person's Treasure

We all love free stuff, don't we? There are a lot of good folks out there that want to recycle their unwanted items instead of throwing them away. This is extremely good for the planet and for college students looking for furniture to decorate their first apartment too. Spring cleaning is around the corner, so when you start sorting out stuff in your basement, keep in mind that there are locals in your area who would love to take those items from your hands.

Here are a few sites where you can give away unwanted items, as well as find a few free ones for yourself:

FreeCycle: I recently told you about FreeCycle, a website where eco-friendly citizens recycle their unwanted items by giving them away to others. Users can find some pretty cool items in their area, and all you have to do to get it is reply to the ad. All items listed are free, so you can either give or get neat stuff.

Gigoit: Again, those who use this site do so under one condition: the item listed must be a gift. The site allows users to also post up to three images of the items they're giving away, as well as offer tools such as Google Gadget, Google Earth and RSS feeds that keeps you posted on all the latest listings.

Craigslist:
By far one of the best sites out there. Users can post free classifieds under categories such as personal, housing, for sale, services, and more. Tools such, as RSS feeds and widgets, can be useful when you're job or househunting. Lifehacker has a good post on how to use some of the available tools.

Does anyone know of any similar sites? Let me know in the comments below.

Before you again recommend the freecycle network to anyone, may I respectfully suggest you read these two articles? http://www.businessweek.com/the_thread/techbeat/archives/2005/08/whats_up_at_fre.html and http://gristmill.grist.org/story/2006/7/26/111526/801 Enlightening to say the very least.

It's amazing what you can ditch via craigslist. I've been able to find motivated collectors for such detritus as a damaged hot tub cover (grabbed by a late-shift worker who wanted to cover the window of his bedroom for sound and light) to miscellaneous paint buckets. Just post it on craigslist and watch the responses flow in.

Hi Gina! I came across a new website similar to craigslist where users can list free ads, but it seems to offer more features. Craigs can be effective sometimes (though a lot of people never show up to pick up the free items!) but I find it a bit cluttered and overloaded with spam. Freecycle is good but too much text and you can't upload your pix right there. Anyway the site is Listasaurus.com (www.listasaurus.com) and while their free stuff doesn't have too much there yet, there are a lot of cool things for sale, and the ads are free and it's a fun and nice looking site!

I will admit I'm biased since I'm a list owner of a local Freecycle (TM) group, but I've been doing this for four years and with over a thousand members on my site, I think we all need to do whatever it takes to recycle, reduce, reuse and regift. The author of the article did NOT do his homework and I hope everyone will at least join their local group and try it on for size before making a judgment based on one article alone. Happy Recycling, Reducing and Regifting!
