On U.S. shores it's all about MySpace, but what about the rest of the world?
A new mini-study using Google Trends looked at 12 popular social networking websites and found that there's really no such thing as a "global" social network. Language barriers are the likely reason, and you'll see strong national lines when looking at a network's popularity from one country to the next.
For proof of this look no further than Google's famously botched Orkut network: It kept the walls closed to outsiders (unless you could score an invitation) for months (maybe years). By the time the doors were opened it had become overtaken by users from Brazil, to the point where many complained that if you didn't speak Portuguese, you had no hope of being able to make any headway on the system or convince any of your friends to join. (To this day I've still never bothered to register there.) Today Brazil remains far and away the country most interested in the service, with Paraguay a distant second.
Where are each of these social networks most popular? Here's the lineup:
Interesting stuff. It really looks like we're seeing the rise of "national" social networks, where other networks simply don't matter as long as you're in country.
One caveat: Since search data was used, the survey doesn't actually look at use of the networks but at people searching for information about that network (or, by extension, accidentally typing the name of the site into the search box instead of the URL bar). So while these results may not track perfectly with the actual portion of country's residents who are using the service (Facebook seems awfully US-centric), it is instructive in showing where each network is popular, or at least becoming so.

I'd like to think that Facebook is a bit bigger in the U.S. than what's shown. Not too many people I know still use it. Still, that's the stats from search indexing results.
Hey you got it a handshake and a smile sounds good to me!
About ten tears ago no one would have thought that we would be having these coments posted . Welcome to the information highway truly of the world. No matter how you get there.
WHO CARES WHO CARES WHO CARES IS THERE EALLY SOMEONE GETTING PAID TO COUNT THESE THINGS???????????
Interesting article... I think language translation software could easily solve the problem of launguage barriers. But I don't know much about it. I have read that Google has a large team of people working on it though.
I was once involved in a chat based service that held parties in Milwaukee near where I live. It was a great way to meet new friends and see what the people you were chatting with were like in person. Unfortunately I had to sell my computer and lost track off a bunch of people I once talked to daily. Which really was a downer since we were working on creating a Social Networking site way back in 2003. Who knows maybe some of my former contacts are part of Facebook?
any good paralegeal jobs out there?
Haha "MySpace- God help us" It took me awhile but I did go the dark side there...
I've always thought Facebook leads the pack! How far behind are they behind MySpace? I wonder...
What do you mean "MySpace (God help us)?"
Interesting list... But Im on the go and the best mobile social network in the world is MocoSpace.Com The entire site is accessible via my phone and unlike the other sites that offer 50% for mobile users, I get the best of both 100% pc and !00% mobile! Not one of the sites you listed offer as much for people on the go!
What Happend To Yahoo 360?Alot Of People Use Yahoo360 In Middle East And Other Parts Of The World.
i have tried facebook and myspace but i am very happy with bebo
gooddayz39 said it best. I was once secretary to a county based "billboard" when I purchased my first computer way back in 1995. We too had MUPTs(Modem Users Party Thingy)where we were able to get together and visit face to face. I have not had that much fun since joining MySpace. I have noticed some people, like myself, on MySpace who can't figure out how to do all the gobbledygoop stuff; so we tend not to get on very often. The only time I open up MySpace is to see what my granddaughters are up to. Not a good thing. They are 17 and 19. I do get shocked by some of their antics. Guess I'm just too old.

WAYN.com (Where Are You Now) deserves some mention since they have a decent-sized international membership focusing on Travel-related networking. You can plan trips and exchange reviews of hotels, restaurants, clubs etc.
