All that hammering at Apple must have paid off: Best Buy will begin selling the iPhone, after a year-long wait and plenty of complaining that Apple wasn't being fair to its loyal resellers. While many Apple products (especially iPods) are widely available at "big box" retailers like Costco and Best Buy, Apple has steadfastly refused to allow third parties (aside from carrier AT&T) to resell the iPhone.
Best Buy becomes the first American company to bust through that gate. It will get the iPhone on September 7. The phone will be available at all Best Buys nationwide.
Not mentioned in the company's press release is the issue of activation, but it appears that Best Buy and Apple will indeed continue to require that iPhones be activated before the customer leaves the store with device. I have messages in to both Apple and Best Buy to confirm this and will update the post when one or both gets back to me.
So why is Apple relaxing its rules? Drive by an AT&T or Apple store and you'll probably figure out why: Over a month after its release, there are still long lines of people impatiently waiting to get their hands on an iPhone 3G, mainly because the activation process takes so long. Who knows how many people simply decide to skip purchasing it altogether (or buy something else) because they don't want to wait in line? Apple has been flushing millions away due to the new activation scheme; adding over 600 additional outlets where customers can purchase phones ought to ease the lines a bit.
Now how about that extended warranty?

The activation lines did cost them my business. I wanted an iPhone and went to Apple and ATT stores five times at three locations to get one, but I'm not standing in line like a schmuck to beg them to take my money. Instead I figured out how to flash the firmware on my RAZR to get GPS navigation, and now I have no desire to get an iPhone.
Get your facts straight. The long lines for the I-Phone at ATT and Apple stores is because the demand is greater than the supply. The activation process is simple and not the problem. Now, there will just be unhappy people being turned away from Best Buy when they cannot get an I-Phone. Dear Steve, just make more phones, please.
Strange that you say there are still long lines. I passed an AT&T store in Boone NC and didn't see any lines. Also, it was advertising every phone but the iPhone.

Simply order one from a corporate AT&T location, not a authorized seller location, and wait for it to be shipped to the store. I got mine within 10 days and there was no waiting in line, etc. Worked great! As for the other cell companies getting the iPhone: research the technology before you post. There is a difference between CDMA and GSM, which is why some companies may never get it. Just think, by 2010 (when AT&T's exclusivity with the iPhone is done) there will be a new tech toy that will solve all the worlds problems.... and it will be the Apple iPhone 10G!!! And it will take you into outerspace in 2 seconds and take you back through time!! GO APPLE!
