What Is Microsoft Fiji?

As Windows Vista creeps ever closer to reality, news has already leaked regarding Vista's successor. The twist? We know the code name—Microsoft Fiji—but we don't exactly know what it is.

Mary Jo Foley has the scoop. Sifting through the conjecture, Fiji appears to be the first major update to Vista, either a relatively minor service pack release or a somewhat more involved update, akin to what Microsoft did with Windows 98 Second Edition (which is notable for adding USB support to Windows). That would put Fiji on a path for arrival at the end of 2007 or some time in 2008.

Fiji, however, is probably not the next major version of Windows (or whatever incarnation Microsoft's next OS may take). Code-named Vienna, this upcoming OS has been described in broad strokes by Microsoft at developer conferences for years, but it probably won't appear until around 2011. Most observers think Vienna will be Microsoft's major leap into using the web as a core component of the OS, with a radically rethought interface and a completely rewritten architecture. Wikipedia is a good resource for the collected rumors on Vienna.

What are you hoping for out of Fiji—or Vienna, for that matter?

That is strange that there is already a new OS or an update to Vista. Vista has not seen final release (or has it?) and yet there is already an update. What does it imply? That it is buggy!!! I'm happy with my XP at the moment surely upgrading to Vista means for sure it will require a much more powerful processor... yucks I don;t want to update my processor....

let's face it, more households are using microsoft OS. That is why they can release am OS even if it is unstable. The system requirments for windows 98 up to XP are very minimal. But this vista requires a 1 gig memory. So I bet they have problems with Vista that is why it already has a next version. so better wait for the feedback of would be vista users because who knows the next version would be released also on the same year.

Blackcomb was announced at the same time XP was. If apple isn't developing something beyond Leopard, then they are gonna be in trouble when windows stops. They already have announced the ending of the windows line with blackcomb, now called vienna, and have said after that it will be something completely new. Why people don't remember announcements when they want to stout crap about how they must not be doing a good job by working 2 os's ahead. The idea is that by working on the cores of a future project, as the tech becomes available you can quickly fini----- , allowing better faster updates. Nice job pointing out you don't know what you're talking about though.

Interesting the comment challenging others to create an OS that will be compatible with everything out there. Why do that? How stupid is that? No other product I can think of works in this way and therefore most other products . . . well . . . work. If you're really serious about operating systems you have to build the hardware. I think someone very smart said that. MS found a way to print money and the rest of us, as a result, have suffered all these years under their yoke of "works with everything" mediocrity. I know I have. Meanwhile, Mac users get a new, beautifully-designed, compatible, almost virus-free OS every 18 months since 2001. Just how stupid are we . . . ?

I wonder why the Mac OS X doesn't have any viruses? Perhaps because 95% of about 450,000,000 computers run on Windows OS. So people who love to make viruses don't waste their time on Mac OS because they can hurt 95% of all the computers in the world if they come up with a virus for Windows. If Mac OS was used just as much as Windows (which will never happen) Macs would have plenty of viruses.

as long as Fiji gets a royalty out of it maybe all users of the new system can get a discount to visit fiji we could use the support.
