Back in 1996, gamers thrilled at the opportunity to engage in wargames in an alternate universe, one where Hitler had had been killed by a time-traveling Einstein, but which prompted the Soviet army to invade Europe instead. So much for the best of intentions.

The original version of Command & Conquer: Red Alert is now available for free download, partly in celebration of C&C's 13th anniversary but mainly to promote the upcoming Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. It's unclear if the download will continue to be available after today, but if you really want to get the game for free, I'd suggest grabbing it before midnight, just in case.

The game runs on Windows versions from 95 to XP. Vista is not officially supported, but the company says that you can find tips on getting to work with Vista on various fan sites.

You will also need a compressed file extractor like WinRAR to decompress the files, which extract as two ISO files. You will then have to burn the files to two CD-R discs, and then you can install the game. (Try CDBurnerXP if you don't have a suitable app on hand.) Both apps are essentially free.

That's it! Have fun, whether you're playing as the Germans or the Russkies.

Get C&C:Red Alert here!

UPDATE: Looks like the promo is continuing after 8/31, so download at your convenience.

Hi, great post. This was a favorite game a little while back. I've got a question for you... Is there a means to make older games, not set up for XP, work like normal? I've heard that there is something I can do with my XP to make this adjustment, I just don't know what it is. thanks, Jim
