File under oddity: Website Digital Camera University says that you can take better portraits (that is, pictures of people's faces) if you turn your digital camera upside down.
Why? It has to do with the location of the flash: Since it's mounted above the lens it creates slight shadows by the way the light bounces off the lines on your subject's face, which makes wrinkles and blemishes look more noticeable than they should. By turning the camera upside down, the light (now coming from beneath the lens) hits the face at a slightly different angle, creating a slightly different image. That's the theory, anyway.
Looking at the close-up on the site's sample images you can indeed see the difference the writer is talking about if you look at the lines around the model's eyes fairly closely. But I tried it myself to make sure this wasn't a hoax. When shooting an adult face, it was very clear that the upside-down tip did indeed reduce the appearance of lines. The crease around the mouth was noticeably less visible in the upside-down shot I tried than in the regular portrait. However, there was one unintended side effect: The upside-down shot made her face look much redder than it should have, for reasons I can't explain.
I also tried the trick on my four-year-old daughter, but since she is not yet jaded and beaten down by the cruel world, she doesn't have facial lines. I couldn't tell the difference between the side-by-side shots of her.
As the linked site itself notes, the effect is subtle and difficult to see, but it does exist. Is it something I'll do regularly? Probably not, unless repeated portraits keep turning out badly. But it's a neat little party trick that you ought to try at least once when snapping a shot of grandma.

I will try this with Christmas coming up with the family and share the idea with friends as well. Thanks!
Don't you people have anything better to do ?!?! Remember 911? Ignore your rights, they'll go away. If you're not angry, you're not paying attention. Get involved in something that matters.
HA! HA! HA! You guys are so funny! However, it is an interesting concept and valid theory. I'm sure, in spite of your humor (or because of it), the vast majority of you will try it ~ and some of you will actually be impressed and continue to use it. I know I'm going to try it and if there is even the slightest improvement, it will be a keeper from then on. Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year to all. May all your lives be filled with health, happiness, less wrinkles, but most of all ~ an abundance of love.
Wow!? I will try that. ha ha ha.
I think your subject was beautiful no matter how the photo was taken.
I'm a pro photographer. The flash should be over the lens because that's the way light naturally falls and looks the best. Lighting from under the flash has that flashlight-under-the-face campfire story effect. Not flattering.
I can say, being that I work in a photo lab, I have not noticied any significant differences between which way the camera is held when taking what is called a portrait shot-If lines & wrinkles are such a problem, the easiest solution is to take the photo, & use a photo editing program, such as photoshop to take out the lines & wrinkles-also, as far as red eye in a photo is concerned, when taking the shot, do not allow the subject to look directly into the camera. Instead, have them look a little off to one side to diminish the effect of the reflection of the flash in their eyes.
Any photo 101 x-student knows this. If you have an important photo to take, take it all different ways, you can always delete it. flash from left or right will give different result. If you want to loose 20lbs turn sideways and inhail. Most people can look better than they are for a split second. That is why most popporazi photos look like crap or like you and me !!!!
Hey #56 that is my camera in that picture and I happen to really like it. It takes better pictures than some of the newer cams so don't knock it! I don't have hundreds of dollars to buy a new one every year.
You know what I read little facts here and there often on my computer. I love taking pictures of people so I am going to try this trick. Great daily new's thank you. Joey Fogarty
Thank you for that info, I'm new at all this digital camera stuff and for the last 3 mo I'm still learning. It's more then aim & shoot.
WOW turn it sideways....it makes you look slimmer
Ok are you people for real ? what do you thinks gunna happen when you pull this picture out and if it does what they say do u think the people you show will think its you when you were younger lol give me a break you are what you are not what you pretend to be
This is the dumbest thing I have ever heard!!
Um... I think we are being scammed. Look at the subject's eyes. The flash pattern reflected on her eyes shows two different light sources in the first photo and only one in the other. Not a true test of their theory. Most responders are correct. Funny idea, good way to confuse your subject!
The most ridiculous thing is you are all pathetic enough to be chatting excesively about holding cameras upside down and how cool it is. Dont any of you have a job or something. Really WHO CARES !!
okay i tried the upside down view and the normal, with my wrinkles, it made no difference. sorry
These are some of the funniest comments. I think I will use them in my comedy act. LOL, LOL, LOL.
Yeah Great. Now pose your subject a few feet in front of a wall and check out the really crappy shadow too.
