Important lesson for console gamers (and anyone with any amount of electronics at home, really): One family in Michigan left a seven-year-old original Xbox powered on for up to four days running in their rec room. The console eventually got so hot that it ignited a spiral-bound notebook that had been resting against or near it, and from there went the whole house.
The original Xbox had been the subject of a massive recall for just such an issue, as the power cords shipped with over 14 million of the consoles were implicated in overheating problems just like this one. The owners of the now incinerated unit say they didn't hear about the recall until after the fire had burned their apartment to a crisp.
The family also says their autistic 11-year-old left a CD playing in the unit on endless repeat and never thought that leaving the unit on for extended periods could cause such a problem.
So what do we learn from this issue? First: Yes, leaving most electronic devices on for extended periods of time can lead to overheating, possibly with disastrous consequences. Try to keep all electronics well ventilated, and ensure that air vents are clear of dust and aren't blocked by anything (even a single sheet of paper can be enough to cause a dangerous overheating condition). Don't lock computers or consoles behind closed cabinets, either: Even if they don't burn down the house, you could damage the electronics inside when things get too hot.
Finally, keep tabs on recall notices by checking sites like Recalls.gov from time to time to make sure your gear isn't on the danger list. And of course, if you've still got an original Xbox in use, check out Microsoft's recall information here. Better late than never.

so,..we have more negligent parents that don't monitor what's plugged into the wall? is it just me here??? isn't this covered under parenting 101? at least in mature adult responsibilty 01? oh please people..enough already.
There isn't anything wrong with the headline. Fact one: The Xbox overheated. Fact two: Because of this, the house burned down. The Xbox caught fire, period! It could have been a PS or Wii, but it wasn't, it was an Xbox. Get off the authors back.
Okay, now I would like to know why the family had to emphasize that their 11 year old "autistic" child left it on. You don't have to blame it on him or her. My friends little brother is autistic and he knows not to do things like that. They should have left the autistic part out because it has nothing to do with the fact that it was left running. Besides the parents can turn it off too.
While I sympathize that this family lost everything in a fire, I cannot imagine anyone leaving any item on and unattended for an entire week. FYI I plug a laptop cooler into my XBox when in use and it works great! I picked it up for around $20 and it is a supplement for the XBox's own system.
Well, It seems to me that rogueist isn't a normal video gamer. Who actually puts there Xbox or any other brand of console in a place that the instructions specifically tell you to put it? Honestly, I don't have the space for that in my college dorm room or my house. The average American is going to disregard the instructions and put the thing wherever it fits. Lets be realistic, ok? I mean sure, if the house burns down because you didn't read the safety instructions that Microsoft printed out to keep you safe, then it is your fault. But I'm sure that I speak on behalf of many Xbox owners when I say I don't really care where I put the darn thing as long as I can play some Halo or GTA.
I just want to comment on what jimhansen62 said. Who cares if the said it was an XBox. They could have said it was a Dell laptop. Which I have. This article is not blaming Microsoft for this issue. They don't hate Xbox or PS. They are letting parents know that the XBox 360 will get hot. We know our Playstation 2 and 3 gets hot, so we don't leave them on for days at a time. It's the parents who buys these systems for their children and they should monitor their children a little more. So don't judgemental against this article. They are trying to save lives and homes. My God bless.
Its obvious its the consumers fault for leaving it on so long and having the vents blocked. Microsoft actually told everyone about the recall. I remember getting an email, letter and a call about the recall. They changed my chord for free. Microsoft did an excellent job on changing my chord. This is just a sad case of learning a lesson.
Actually most electronic devices will say not to run for extended periods of times. Just because your device hasn't malfunctioned doesn't mean it is supposed to be running all the time. Read your computer manuals, they even tell you not to leave a computer on if you do not plan on using it. Where is the personal responsibility? Alarmist connotation?? Please. Maybe you should leave a hair dryer on for 4 days and see what happens. Yes they have a fuse that tries and prevent a fire but nothing is fool proof.
Hold on. Your little quip on what we learned here - Most electronic devices CAN run for extended periods of time WITHOUT ANY disastrous consequences. Most PC's, monitors, many TV's, wall transformers, and many, many other electronic devices are left on for days, weeks, months, years with NO disastrous consequences. Moreover, many newer devices have thermistors/overheat protection that prevent them from operating when they breach a temperature threshold. I don't disagree with your suggestions about ventilation and the like. They are all very good, common-sense suggestions. It's the alarmist connotation of leaving electronic devices ON that you should take a second look at.
4 days?!?!?! I worry a lot if I play for over 9 hrs. and about the recall, I ordered 2 cables years ago and they never came. I still use my Xbox without any problem except the fact that the disk tray gets stuck sometimes (My Xbox is 6 years old).
Cut and Dry here, HOME OWNERS FAULT -READ OWNERS MANUAL!!!! Especially with a Autistic child involved. When will people take responsibilty for their own screw ups!
I am a hardcore gamer, and never have had a problem with either of my systems. Sounds like their trying to single out the Xbox system again, because its a Microsoft product. If someone isnt responsible to keep aware of things like this, perhaps they shouldnt have it. And how could someone listen to the same CD non-stop for four days? Did the parents have earplugs in their ears or what? Thank God nobody died, or Xbox would have become a killing machine as well. Come on Parents, pay attention to what your children are doing, and whats going on in their lives!
Wow, that was pretty dumb, why would you leave anything flammable by something thats bound to overheat. Why would you leave the ducts closed, etc. For all of the people who blame gaming ( you know who you moms are), its not about that, dont go saying that you shouldn't let your children play video games, why don't you take some responsibility a different way, like..hm.. thinking logically not to let it run for 4 days straight or for one read the instructions and warning pamphlet. (Even though no one does, too bad, your suppose to)
Why was the child not being supervised by the parents, they did state that he was an autistic child and he might not have the ability to understand that these game boxes can overheat if left on.
Would somebody leave an iron plugged in and left on the sofa and then sue the iron company after thier house burned down? they probally would, would they win..I dont think so. Yes, there was a recall, but leaving a device that uses electricity on for an unreasonable amount of time after ignoring instructions and directions of proper placement, it really is the parents fault. Face it a lot people are morons who don't think about what they are doing. no matter where you are or what your doing if your stupid enough your going to die.
I am greatful to read the warning about the xbox, my sons are dedicated players and I am forwarding this to both of them incase they are not in compliance with the regulation and recalls
So apparently, no one has realized the obvious. If they didn't know it was on loop, then how exactly did they know it was on for four days straight? Is this a bit of over exageration???
Also who said anything about suing? How do you know they tried to sue XBox. They have insurance, they tried to collect on the insurance to replace their house. You should be bashing on the people that fall asleep while smoking and burn their house down that way. You don't know what their life is like. How many jobs they work or how many other kids they have or much time and energy goes into caring for their autistic child. It's an article, some of you all need to get a life and worry about more important things.
One lesson I tell ALL people. You should buy the fan attachment for the X-Box 360 right up front. Second, you NEVER leave ANY console on when you are not using it. ANd third NEVER leave flammable materials near ANY electronic equipment. That family learned a painful lesson. And I bet some of them even have college degrees. Proves knowledge has nothing to do with grades!

It amazes me how stupid some people are that don't know that they left their electronic equipment on. Some people don't take the time to read the instruction manual. Because if they had their property would not be up in flames. Microsoft sent customers with defective power cords instructions on how to get replacement power cords by calling or logging on to their web site xbox.com.
