The hot news over the weekend: The infinitely popular Nintendo DS Lite may be getting an upgrade, soon to be including MP3 playback capabilities and a camera. Officially Nintendo says it has no comment, though it has not denied the rumor.
But Nikkei Net has lots of details on the supposed product, including a price (16,800 yen, or $158), and availability set for 2008. The report, which has been cited on gaming sites across the Web, even says that you'll be able to use photos you snap in new kinds of games, and music and photos will be accessible via wireless connection and SD card. (That would also suggest that the DS would add a new storage slot to the mix.) The screen is rumored to be larger, too.
The launch is said to be set for Japan first and only with a few hundred thousand units, which is typical for Nintendo, so even if the rumor pans out, it's unlikely we'll see units on our shores before 2009. (And even then we'll undoubtedly be in another Wii/PS3 situation with shortages, long lines, and gunfire.) To put that in perspective, the company plans to sell 28 million DS units this year worldwide.
The move would be an interesting, and probably successful one, for Nintendo. The DS is a phenomenon that's far larger than almost any other gadget (only the iPod is really competitive), and it makes sense for Nintendo to upgrade its game device to grow along with its young customer base. As kids stop playing cake-baking games, they start snapping pictures and listening to music... so why not give them everything in one package, right? Especially one they're already intimately familiar with....
Now all Nintendo needs to do is add a cell phone to the DS and they'll have a lock on tweens for life.

"""PSP HAS a camera out in Japan, plus PSP has GPS, Video, Internet (out of the box) Radio, all kinds of cool stuff. PSP wins.""" The PSP does not have...Games Built-in web browser, MP3, GPS, Camera, Video playback ... do you want a back scratcher too? People are TOO "feature" obsessed, The DS plays Games, the only thing that makes sense is the built-in Wi-fi for online play. And there should be optional accessories/upgrades for other uses, but really, we are going to get to the point were our toothbrushes are going to have MP3 functionality…and a projective web browser of course. Can’t be ten minutes without checking your MySpace!
I defenitly wanna get one i just wi----- would have the eneternet on it that would make more people buy it
I think this new innovation to the DS is fantastic and I will definitely be getting one. The current DS Lite is fine compared to the old one that looks like a plastic brick from the 80's. PSP does have capabilities, but is way over- priced for the things it offers. By the way you can also get on the internet with a DS, I do all the time.
I think tht its so cool but I would like Nintendo 2 add somemore features 2 it like a web browser and GPS and more color choices 2. It would make the DS stand out a lot. For right now PSP WINS:)
What ever dorks Nintendo will always be better then Sony... PSP surprisingly breaks so easy and my DS has never been broken yet... Bought it when it first came out and I bought the Lite
japan is ahead they come up with the ideas duh
nintendo is and always will be better than sony. For years nintendo has made almost indestructible game systems. Best collection of games. Good price. Awsome features (wifi yah). And if you must have gps, mp3,video playback, and webrowsing.Just spend 20 bucks pick up a games and music card at walmart an get webrowser, videoplayback,mp3,evengps not to mention the extensive library of homebrew games.
that would be awesome I'm a teen and i would love to have a camera/mp3/game system and if eventually they put a phone in it that would be wicked awesome!!!

Yes, I agree. Nintendo kills Sony in Video Games especially the DS. It is still the hardware that sells the most. With this, who knows how many Nintendo will sell.
