Even Metallica fans think the music's too loud

Has the ritualistic cranking up of the volume of music tracks finally reached a tipping point? Now many of the fans of heavy metal outfit Metallica are complaining that the band's latest effort, Death Magnetic, is too simply loud. And yes, that's a bad thing.

I last wrote about the loudness issue in June 2007, where I outlined the common complaints about audio tracks that have been bothering audiophiles for decades. To recap: The problem stems from pushing the overall audio levels on a track as high as possible. While volume is increased, variation is diminished. This means that while a track is nice and loud, its details are lost. After all, in a digital track, there's only so much room for data in the finite number of bits available on a CD, so something has to go. But no one wants to have a song that's less loud than the next band on the rack... and so the cycle continues.

Now the disappointment has spread into the once-unassailable world of heavy metal, a genre where there's historically been no such thing as too loud. Metallica fans across the web are complaining, loudly, about the levels on Death Magnetic, saying the new album is so loud you "can't hear the details of the music" with one critique saying it is "barely listenable." An online petition has even turned up asking the band to remix the album at a lower overall volume.

In a recent interview with Blender magazine, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich addressed Web critics by saying that, "... there's nothing up with the sound quality. It's 2008, and that's how we make records. [Producer] Rick Rubin's whole thing is to try and get it to sound lively, to get it to sound loud, to get it to sound exciting, to get it to jump out of the speakers."

He also adds that on the Web, people become more vocal, especially when it comes to negative viewpoints. "The Internet gives everybody a voice, and the Internet has a tendency to give the complainers a louder voice," says Ulrich. "Part of being in Metallica is that there's always somebody who's got a problem with something that you're doing."

The Wall Street Journal has helpfully offered an interactive system where you can see and (more importantly) hear, head to head, what the fuss is all about. Twenty years ago, the music thrashed as furiously as anything and it's so loud I turned down my PC's audio to get it to a comfortable level. Today's track is absurdly loud right from the start, and you can easily hear how mushy the bass and drums sound. They may as well be static.

Despite all of the complaints, Metallica's Death Magnetic currently reigns at the top of The Billboard Charts. But who's to blame for all of the noise? Guns N' Roses, if the Journal is to be believed, was the first to start cranking up the audio, back in 1987. Bands have been on a quest to one-up each other ever since.

Now it seems like we're reaching the limits of big audio, lest every song devolve into a buzzing puddle of gruel. But bands keep trying, mixers push back the best they can... and consumers get caught in the crossfire.

Metallica style is loud and always has been and always will be. But sometimes too much of a good thing is not good. Dudes, you guys are great.........no need to over do a good thing.

Actually you have to give George Martin the 'credit' as he was the first to pump up the volume by getting the Beatles vinyl singles cut at 3db or so louder than the standard to make them stand out on the wimpy car radios of the day, being 1963/64. But the practice has gone too far past optimum and modern mixing turns everything into an indiscernable mush.

I noticed this problem when it was on the Metallica web site I thought well maybe its not a finished product so I will not worry about it now. when I got the CD I was having to turn down my radio. I could barely hear the bass and the guitars where a bit over distorted even the drums seem to just have this loud ping. Don't get me wrong riffs, vocals drums and I wish I could say bass where good It was old Metallica but I feel Rick might have taken Metallica is a live band a little over board and just taken that good clean sound out in vain. St.Anger might have been a flop but the sound was great you cuold hear the bass it was quality. All in all it still Rocked hope in the future it will be remastered.

As an old school fan of Metallica the one thing that I liked was actually hearing each individual cords being played. You "felt" what the words were saying thru the cords. After trying to listen with the interactive, I haven't a clue what's going on here, let alone the words.

if the fans think it's too loud then they are either old fans that have grown too old and have their hearing aids turned up too loud or they are fans who jumped on the band wagon late and only experienced their black album and think that anything more extreme then that is too much--they might not really be into heavy metal and should try listening to glam rock instead.

You'd think that when fans complain, he'd take (Ulrich) them a little more seriously. After all, we're the one's who have to listen to the crap. I haven't cared for Metallica since back in the old days, but that's just me. I still can't believe that their record is at the top of the charts, cuz everyone I know can't stand it. I really miss the old Metallica...:(

I downloaded it off amazon, and it sounds fine. Just be thankful it doesn't suck like St. Anger.

Personally, I have listened to Metallica since the band's inception. This album rocks just like the others. I love the heavy bass line and drums in several of the songs. And yes, I turn the volume WAY up on my car stereo when I am listening to it! I'm one of those 'old farts' that everyone keeps referring to and I always listen to my music loud (I also have excellent hearing). Maybe, it's because I don't listen to good music on iPods or MP3's. What do expect to get as far as sound quality out of an ear bud the size of a pea? Way to go Metallica, keep up the great music. Hard Core Fan

Oh my god, come on man, it's Metallica, if you don't like the noise then go listen too Johnny Cash. No offense but Metallica has always been rocking. Maybe you need to listen to elevator music. If your going to complain about noise why not complain about these cars that drive up and down streets and you hear nothing but bass. Now thats annoying. All bass and no music. So loud that its viberating my house. Funny thing is, it could be rainy, snowy, tornado, or whatever and they still have the windows down. Amazing how people complain about the wrong things. :D

If you don't like it don't listen to it. Boy George might be a better choice for some people. Metallica is one of the best bands ever.

Metallica, slipknot, pantera, and mudvaine are hardcore heavy metal bands and they are for fans of that type of music. First it was metallica has gone soft now its metallica is to hard, why not metallica is dynamic and has range that has not been duplicated by any other metal band. I say congradulations Metallica go harder if you dare we hardcore fans love it and we love you!

Remember the saying, "If it's too loud, you're too old"? Well, it just seems to me that Metallica fans, in general, are simply just getting older. I love the sound of the new album.

I'm sorry, the old adage applies here folks. If it's too loud, you're too old! They sound amazing to me, 100% better than St. Anger! People wanted higher tech so we have digital music now,.., woopee, they still sound great, if you're high tech toys distort the music for you then too bad for you, you should have stuck with vinyl. In the meantime, quit your whining! Can't wait to see them live!

I just finished reading the Rollig Stone article about this and wanted to see what people were saying. I'm not surprised that it's loud, if anything I guess it's an indicator if you really like metallica or not. If your concerned with audio quality, stop downloading mp3's only play high quality cd's with high quality equiptment. If you have to turn it down, I want you too say outloud to everyone in your surrounding area, "They distorted this heavy metal and I have to turn it down." Then finish your Michelobe Ultra.

I'm glad people are taking note of this problem. It also suprises me that some of the more reputable rock producers and engineers allow this to happen. Sure, rock fans like their music loud....so let them turn up their stereos. When you make the actual recording louder, you lose fidelity and gone are many of the dynamics of the songs. Many of the nuances of production go unnoticed. The end result is tarnished product. Can we just have Brendan O'Brien produce all rock albums from here on out? He still seems to have a grasp on what a rock album should sound like.
