Earlier today rumors began swirling that Microsoft was going to extend the life of Windows XP once again. While XP won't be going back on retail shelves, Microsoft is allowing computer manufacturers to include XP media with PCs that have Vista pre-installed, so customers can continue to take advantage of their "downgrade rights."
Until now, vendors were supposed to stop providing this media as of January 31, 2009. Microsoft is now extending that period until July 31, 2009, an extra six months.
Late this afternoon I confirmed the rumor with a Microsoft spokesperson, who said it was indeed true. I quote: "Downgrade rights do not expire. As more customers make the move to Windows Vista, we want to make sure that they are making that transition with confidence and that it is as smooth as possible. Providing downgrade media for a few more months is part of that commitment, as is the Windows Vista Small Business Assurance program, which provides 1-on-1, customized support for our small business customers." When I asked if that meant another six months of media, the rep confirmed the timing.
While not officially sanctioned by Microsoft, presumably this means vendors will also have another six months where they can do the downgrade for you if you buy a new machine. The rules are a little hazy on the subject, but the majority of major computer vendors continue to offer at least some computers with XP preinstalled at the factory, exercising the same downgrade rights that let a consumer uninstall Vista and install XP in its place.
OEMs have not immediately said whether they'll extend such programs, but HP had previously stated it would continue downgrading through July 2009, even before the extension was announced. Now I have to wonder if we'll get another extension (or more simple ignoring of Microsoft's rules) to get us to 2010, when Windows 7 is supposed to be released....

I have tried Vista, and I myself will try to keep my xp as long as I can, I know of others that has vista come with their computers that are switching it for xp. XP has vista beat. I hope they never get vista fixed. I hope they end up dropping vista.
I gave up on Vista when I tried to download the service pack and it crashed. I got a copy of Ubuntu and I've never looked back... It simply works and all the programs are free. No virus worries either
No XP? I'l change Operating System. I'll revert back to the "Vic 20" or "Commadore 64" before I'm forced to use the "Vista".
Heck I will buying a Mac before I will run Vista again. It lasted 10 days on my new machine before I wiped it out and reformatted the machine with XP. Vista runs better with a dual processor then a single processor. I do agree with ahohen1 that those who have no problems with Vista either work for Microsoft or they have brand new machines, peripherals and games that don't clash with the OS.
I saw Vista in action last spring. Terrible. There is the option of switching to the Mac. I know some people who have and they are happy. I switched to Ubuntu a few years ago. I am very satisfied. I keep XP Home installed in a virtualbox for the very rare time I need it. That would be the very tiniest number of webpages these days.
Vista is great and I personally have had ZERO issues with ANYTHING. Been running it for close to 2 years now. I remember this happening with 98 and XP. People HATED XP and hailed 98. Please, make the switch already.
firstnamecharleshopkins: Microshaft employee? Your opinion sure make you seen as one! oOljubeioOo: How can Microshaft be such a big company and be so successful selling software with so many bugs and defects? AND, best of all, discontinue correcting the screw-ups, drop it completely and come out with what they claim is better than the last, when if fact everyone who upgraded to it will have to start all over again and download fixes and fixes and fixes, and fixes and then what? Wow, they will came out with another software... Win7! And, guess what? They will stop correcting the screw-ups in in Vista and and the same routine will start with Win7! I know no company is perfect, BUTT, Microshaft is going downhill and fast in my book!
What about those of us that bought new machines in the interim where XP was NOT allowed to be downgraded? I was forced to swallow Vista despite my pleading to Dell and HP. Now, Im stuck with Vista. The major manufacturers of computers (Dell, HP, etc) should be the ones that protect consumers by holding the line on untested, buggy, crapola like Vista. I fault them as much as Microsoft. I was THIS CLOSE to buying a Mac after I returned one HP TouchSoft (thoroughly buggered-up OS software) and a Dell XPS (bad monitor) to the manufacturers. Don't make me join the Dark Side.
Even better... if they really want to sell PCs, enclose a voucher to let me just put Mac OS/X on the PC and be done with it. Too bad Apple won't allow this. Microsoft has always been incapable of innovating and of solving security problems. Each version of Windows is another lame attempt to keep up with Apple. But finally, OS/X is getting just too slick and handy for Microsoft to even COPY. The result? Vista. A thinly veiled, utterly botched attempt to copy OS/X.
I have Vista on 1 machine and XP on the. Even with Service Pack 1, Vista is still a message. It is slow to boot up and turn off, the file management system is a mess and it crash much more than XP. My XP machines run faster and are more stable.
I am a Computer Engineer and in my perspective, Vista is much more better then XP. I have Vista in my laptop and XP in my desktop, and I have never seen Vista crashing. I used both of my computers to make application and both works fine with VS.NET 2005 and only the problem I see in Vista is it needs lot of memory and processing power. So if you can afford these, then it is lot better to switch to Vista then XP.
Where are all the Linux people defending themselves? To be honest, the only afford Mac for most people is the Mini. In today's economic turmoil, unless you are quite well off, I don't see people dropping $700 for a Mac. I can buy a case, ram, motherboard, and a Core2Duo processor for well UNDER $700 and build my own. I'll stick with the flexibility to build my own machine and a cost much less than that of a Mac.
collectionlaw: The file management system is a mess? It is NTFS, the same as in XP. As for boot up times, I go from power to usable desktop in 45 seconds! You need to learn to configure your startup and services so you are not loading everything. I have been using Vista since it came out Jan 2007. My system has NOT crashed once. Does it take time to get used to? Sure, but so did XP. I am gonna laugh at you all saying "keep XP" after Windows 7 is released, because it will have the same system requirements as Vista. Upgrades are relatively cheap today. 1gb of DDR2 RAM for $20-$30? Penny pinchers.
they should just come out with a new one every 5 years, not constantly. Vista might be good, but it takes time and effort to get up to speed with a new system, and not everyone has tons of time to do this every year or two. I am sticking with XP because I have no problem doing anything I want to do, and it is familiar. I cant imagine Vista being of any benefit, because there is not currently anything that I cannot already do. Instead of little BS incremental changes, just come out with something really new and amazing, but less frequently.
I use XP and have never installed or used Vista. I am going to stay with XP for the stuff I have to do on a PC, an continue using the Linux derivitive Ubunto which is stable and free.
I have Xp on my laptop, and vista on my desktop, vista is a bit choppy, but it isn't that bad. however, i have OSX 10.5 on my macbook and it is by far the best.
Windows updates is turned off on my machine! No need to let Microsoft crash me and force me into Vista! Think about it. Have you had problems with updates?
Windows vista is good, but I prefer to Windows XP because it can give confidence to whatever driver that I will install will be all accepted
The trouble with updates is one has to start from the beginning again.

I've been using Windows Vista for over a year and I think that without a doubt it's one of the worst operating systems that I've ever had to use. There all kinds of problems with it and why customers that buy new PC's have to put with it because Microsoft have decided that's all we have it installed I have absolutely no idea. I think that it's a "money spinner" for them
