It's official: Windows 7 to be called "Windows 7"

I've never understood the tech world's love affair with "code names." Consider Windows Vista: For years it was known widely by its code name, "Longhorn." And just when everyone got used to calling it Longhorn, Microsoft up and sprang a new name on us, and the education process had to start again from scratch. Reporters and consumers continued to use the code name for months before finally switching over.

Intel is even worse: It has dozens of code names for its various chip projects, some of which are nearly unpronounceable. Intel's code names are so ingrained in its products that they persist even after the product is launched, much to the confusion of the general public, which couldn't begin to tell you the difference between your Meroms and your Montevinas.

Well Microsoft has finally taken a step in the right direction on the code name front: The Windows 7 project (which has additional code names but which has primarily been referred to as just "Windows 7") is going to be released with its current moniker intact. Windows 7, when it's released circa January 2010, will be known as just that: Windows 7.

In a blog post explaining the naming decision, Microsoft says that the decision to go back to a version-number naming system (which hasn't been used since the Windows 3.x series in the early 1990s) is all about "simplicity." After playing with dates (95, 98, 2000), largely meaningless characters (XP), and "aspirational monikers" (Vista), we've come full ciricle, and I'm thankful for it. (One has to imagine the company would also like to distance itself from the Vista brand name as much as it can, too.)

Hopefully Microsoft will stick with version numbers going forward. As the company says, it really does simplify things for everyone and makes it easy to comprehend the relative distance between different versions, plus it means a lot less typing for me.

Yea, I love those flames like "Get A Mac" and "Get Linux." Why would anyone in their right mind pay $700 for a Mac Mini when you can build a kick ass machine for ALOT less. Not to mention that Mac only has a 8% market share whereas Linux doesn't even break 1%!!! Too funny these people cry these merciless flames.

Tentative names included Windows Blackcomb, Windows Vienna, WindOS X, Windows Steak and Bl*wj*bs Edition!!! (which proved in beta testing to be Tofu and Long Querulous Discussion About Where Our Relationship Is Going Edition) and Windows 2007^W2008^W2009^W2010. Blog rant: http://tinyurl.com/3l8pws

windows 7? why not vista sp3? that's what it seems to be, vista with improvements on some features nothing else, the GUI is identical with vistas's. the only reason they decided to change the name was because vista has a very bad reputation now.

I really like the move to a simpler naming system. But maybe I'm easily pleased but I kind of love Vista - other people keep reporting issues but my system runs like a train and a simple clean up and optimisation is really all I'd ask for.

Is 7 going to suck like Vista. I quit following Microsoft after I first tested Vista and witnessed it's utter phailure...

It should be called Windows 10 - Windows 3.x - Windows 95 (Windows 4) - Windows 98 (Windows 5) - Windows Me (Windows 6) - Windows 2000 (Windows 7) - Windows XP (Windows 8) - Vista (Windows 9) Unless they consider 95/98 one OS, and try and forget about Me and Vista, only then would Windows 7 really be Windows 7.

oh, BAWWW!!!!! Windows Corporate environment hasn't changed and they haven't learned anything from the Vista debacle, so W7 will just be one more "Box of Bandaids"... (at least it's FREE on new computers!)

isn't it time for MicroSoft mgmt to abandon this deadend line of programming and invest in the Linux Development Community, where the REAL advances are being made! (despite much harassment and persecution from MS) Vista's entire visual appearance has been "borrowed" from previous linux developments, but with the MS' bureaucracy mentality attached...
