What's wrong with the screenshot to the right? Ignoring those red boxes added for emphasis, it looks identical to the Windows Security Center... only it's not. In fact it's a spyware hoax designed to mimic the Security Center almost identically, not to mention trick you into purchasing WinDefender 2008 software, a phony security app which will clear up only the phony security alerts its malware component creates.
WinDefender is just the latest in a series of malware attacks designed to look like legitimate Windows components. But people have finally started to wise up to those smallish "alert" pop-ups, so malware creators are upping the ante with full-blown knockoffs of real security apps. Computer Associates has the details.
In addition to the fake Security Center, WinDefender nags you further by blocking web pages from opening (blaming the blockage on "adware/spyware on your PC"). It adds a yellow drop-down box to Internet Explorer like you get when you try to download something from the web, again with text urging you to install WinDefender 2008 in order to unblock the sites. Just $40 of extortion money makes it all go away...
Most anti-malware software ought to be able to scrub WinDefender 2008 off your machine, but the more important lesson is that you pay close attention to the interface of anything security-related on your PC to ensure that you aren't being scammed while you're actually trying to address any security problems. Anything you see in Windows that recommends a specific program to solve any sort of problem should immediately be considered suspect.

This has been happening for a while. I've been loyal to S&D and Avast for years, and haven't had any issues, even crossing different brands and OS's. Did you hear the news? The Prince of Nigeria wants to give you free money!
hahah wow. i actually have that. and have for awhile. i seriously can't get rid of it. lovely.
#3 is right. This is basically a program that has been working the rounds for a long time. But there was a huge increase in attacks about 3 months ago, at least in the area where I live. I know many people who were infected with the same program, and it can be a bear to remove.
Hitman Pro took care of this nasty little bug quite nicely.
Lol! Well duh pay attention! Who in their right mind just installs whatever a pop-up asks them to?!?! If you're dumb enough to do that, then you shouldn't own a pc.
I use the Yahoo anti spy and it removes it. I run it often!
I agree use antimalwarebytes to clean up adaware like this crap. Antivirus 2008 has been going around alot lately. I have already cleaned that virus up on like 20 different client pc's of mine.
So how do i get rid of it!?!?
I think the punishment for anyone caught writing spyware/malware should be being locked in a cell with a Windows 95 computer with a 300 Baud dialup connection as their only entertainment!!!!
Just got it, Super Anti Spyware (free) just took it right out!
I had this come up on my computer. After several Anti-Virus Scans, and nothing coming up to get rid of it. I downloaded, Yahoo Anti-Spy. It was gone quickly.
This has been around for a while. Best thing we have found to clean it is MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (freebie)
I just got hit by this and lost everything. If this was posted up on yahoo earlier, then i would still have everything.
I had this same pop up yesterday, all I had to do was use ctrl alt delete but, it got rid of everything else I was working on and I lost the page I was on and it costed me a lot of my time
So, if they make you pay for it, can't you track where the money goes and go get these guys? Or is there no law against this stuff?
THE PEOPLE THAT CREATED THIS PROGRAM SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR SCAMMING MILLIONS OF PEOPLE OUT OF MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I am rather computer savy and I knew this was a computer virus. But I had to re-install all my computer software again that came with my computer to get rid of the BUG..
oh my gosh, I am so glad I trusted my instincts on this one, it popped up a couple weeks ago and something didn't seem right...so i didn't do it, i've had enough computer trouble, i don't need to add this on top...
I just got nailed with one of these yesterday. Machine all of a sudden rebooted. When it came back up, it started trying to install "XP Antivirus 2009". I immediately kileld that process. But I kept getting the nag balloon telling me i needed to install it. At that point, my machine was already infected. Kaspersky and windows defender (both up to date) did not prevent it. Had to got to malwarebytes(verified through cnet) to get a cleaning tool that worked.
I like malwarebyte's software myself but like linux even more.
