What's wrong with the screenshot to the right? Ignoring those red boxes added for emphasis, it looks identical to the Windows Security Center... only it's not. In fact it's a spyware hoax designed to mimic the Security Center almost identically, not to mention trick you into purchasing WinDefender 2008 software, a phony security app which will clear up only the phony security alerts its malware component creates.
WinDefender is just the latest in a series of malware attacks designed to look like legitimate Windows components. But people have finally started to wise up to those smallish "alert" pop-ups, so malware creators are upping the ante with full-blown knockoffs of real security apps. Computer Associates has the details.
In addition to the fake Security Center, WinDefender nags you further by blocking web pages from opening (blaming the blockage on "adware/spyware on your PC"). It adds a yellow drop-down box to Internet Explorer like you get when you try to download something from the web, again with text urging you to install WinDefender 2008 in order to unblock the sites. Just $40 of extortion money makes it all go away...
Most anti-malware software ought to be able to scrub WinDefender 2008 off your machine, but the more important lesson is that you pay close attention to the interface of anything security-related on your PC to ensure that you aren't being scammed while you're actually trying to address any security problems. Anything you see in Windows that recommends a specific program to solve any sort of problem should immediately be considered suspect.

and that is why mac rocks
The one I had was called MS antivirus ( Not Microsoft ) It sucked. It took almost two weeks to get rid of it. I used the Stopzilla program and ran diagnostics then sent it to them and the would update with new protections.
Just one more reason to pay the extra $$ and get an Apple.
EDITORS!!!!! TAKE A LOOK AT THE FIRST SENTENCE!!!!!......... Screenshot to the LEFT??? Looks to me like it's on the RIGHT!!!
I just went through this yesterday, after hours of trying to get rid of this scam that my computer was infected with Trojan and other viruses. I did go back to a earlier restore date, and that cured the problem. I have found it on many sites since then, just close it out don't open any of the pop ups!!!!!!!!!!!
I got this virus and it made my life misserable for a few days. The worst is I have McAfee Home Defense Stops Viruses, Spyware, Hackers.. ($80.00) and it still got by on my computer!!
I had to deal with this crap the other day. My son got it on his PC it is a pain in the butt to get rid of, If you try to uninstall it restarts the pc of but if you go through "processes" or MSconfig to shut it down. then you can start removing it
This article is great, with good firewall installed to my computer I think it's already been prevented.
I don't worry about this stuff all the time. I bought an Apple.
by the way, to the same people who get infected with this crap, watch out for fake advice on articles and websites like this one. Do your research. You can get an even worse infection by installing what you think is a clean up tool.
This kind of crap is why I refused to use computers. I'll never use a computer my whole life. If you can't get it from the newspaper or figure it out with a pencil and paper, you don't need it!
toyotabedzrock - what do you use to clean it off your customers computers?
I don't see it listed as a program. Or maybe It's called something else? What's the .exe complete name? I see it when I type in run msconfig and then deselect it, but it stays and stays. It's blocked all the anti spyware I've tried to download.
Evrything is B Gastes faulkt. if he made Ie7 a guest app and not tied to the registry none of this will happen. It will be remotely ham passable for the sfackware to jump outside the browser and do damage to my PC and waste my precious time.
Antivirus 2009 is sneaking around now.. If you get a pop up- END TASK. they are getting smarter and smarter... soon the X to close the box will be an install link, if it isn't already
This thing killed my lap-top, i had a diffrent anti-spyware software removing it and it died. I will have my revenge...
my pc has not worked rite since this happened to me, how do i fix, please help
How exactly should I get rid of it? I'm a new student and I don't know much. It took my internet down. it goes to is about: security or something in the internet address bar. I can get on the internet but it keeps directing me to this website. I'm am really annoyed. I have Trend for my anti virus/spyware and it did not take it off. How do I reformat my PC? Do I need to get all my documents off my computer first?
Get a Mac....problem solved :)
