New spyware system mimics Windows Security Center

What's wrong with the screenshot to the right? Ignoring those red boxes added for emphasis, it looks identical to the Windows Security Center... only it's not. In fact it's a spyware hoax designed to mimic the Security Center almost identically, not to mention trick you into purchasing WinDefender 2008 software, a phony security app which will clear up only the phony security alerts its malware component creates.

WinDefender is just the latest in a series of malware attacks designed to look like legitimate Windows components. But people have finally started to wise up to those smallish "alert" pop-ups, so malware creators are upping the ante with full-blown knockoffs of real security apps. Computer Associates has the details.

In addition to the fake Security Center, WinDefender nags you further by blocking web pages from opening (blaming the blockage on "adware/spyware on your PC"). It adds a yellow drop-down box to Internet Explorer like you get when you try to download something from the web, again with text urging you to install WinDefender 2008 in order to unblock the sites. Just $40 of extortion money makes it all go away...

Most anti-malware software ought to be able to scrub WinDefender 2008 off your machine, but the more important lesson is that you pay close attention to the interface of anything security-related on your PC to ensure that you aren't being scammed while you're actually trying to address any security problems. Anything you see in Windows that recommends a specific program to solve any sort of problem should immediately be considered suspect.

I'd get a mac like everyone here is suggesting, but I'm not pretentious enough.

Use linux or a mac. Then if you see one of these things pop up, then you know it is fake. Problem solved.

"I'd get a mac like everyone here is suggesting, but I'm not pretentious enough." http://www.goodbye-microsoft.com Free Debian Linux installer. Comes with Open Office cross-compatible with all your MS Office docs, FREE. MP3 players, graphics programs, etc.etc, and free updates. Four machines converted, three to go. Why? Because Vista is not welcome here, and XP SP3 installs all kinds of Vistoid DRM. Enough.

Look reality is that the users inadvertently install these programs. No matter how much Microsoft (or Apple) tries bad people will still make these apps. Vista takes care of these issues by running programs as a regular user and when the spyware tries to install, Vista will bark at you telling you you're installing software and do you want to allow this? As for the MAC people. my aunt got hit with a nasty case of spyware on her MAC, so dont think this is Windows Only.

My office wa----- by this. You have to delete the .exe file out of C:\Program Files to get rid of it, and then update and run your anti-virus.

Come on guys, at least get the company name correct. Computer Associates has not been called Computer Associates in quite some time. The official company name is CA Inc. not Computer Associates.

The "get a Mac" & "Anti-Vista" trollers invade yet another forum. If I owned a Mac, I wouldn't be on a "Windoze" forum!!! Do you really think that statement will make people change their OS? Look at how hard some users are trying to hold onto XP!! I use/install Spybot, Ad-Aware, and Spyware Blaster. We have never had a issue with Malware with the exception of my 15 y/o, but he knows enough to fix the issue on his own laptop.
