What's wrong with the screenshot to the right? Ignoring those red boxes added for emphasis, it looks identical to the Windows Security Center... only it's not. In fact it's a spyware hoax designed to mimic the Security Center almost identically, not to mention trick you into purchasing WinDefender 2008 software, a phony security app which will clear up only the phony security alerts its malware component creates.
WinDefender is just the latest in a series of malware attacks designed to look like legitimate Windows components. But people have finally started to wise up to those smallish "alert" pop-ups, so malware creators are upping the ante with full-blown knockoffs of real security apps. Computer Associates has the details.
In addition to the fake Security Center, WinDefender nags you further by blocking web pages from opening (blaming the blockage on "adware/spyware on your PC"). It adds a yellow drop-down box to Internet Explorer like you get when you try to download something from the web, again with text urging you to install WinDefender 2008 in order to unblock the sites. Just $40 of extortion money makes it all go away...
Most anti-malware software ought to be able to scrub WinDefender 2008 off your machine, but the more important lesson is that you pay close attention to the interface of anything security-related on your PC to ensure that you aren't being scammed while you're actually trying to address any security problems. Anything you see in Windows that recommends a specific program to solve any sort of problem should immediately be considered suspect.

Surf the internet in a sub account in WinXP etc. and not the administrative account. This way you can't download anything.
that happened to me,it mest my computer up
malwarebytes anti-malware is the best, spybot and adaware will not work against it.
i have windows defender, ad-aware, and avg and i got the antivirus 2009 on my computer. anyone know how to get it off?
How uncanny, I just removed some fake antispywear just this morning. And it was not removed from my antivirus software, I had to actually go to Microsoft to get the software to remove it. It attaches itself without giving permission.
I got the same spyware fake program downloaded on my other computer and it makes my computer crash alot..i didnt even download the sucker..i dont no whats good to download on the internet now for blocking spam
Maybe we should all be able to sue the ----- out of this company so if you have an address I am willing to do just that.
That happened to my grandma's computer,my dad's,and mine just last week. It sucked! Well it tried to get mine but i fixed it. Sadly i can't say the same for my grandma and dad =/
how did you get the antivirus 2008 of your system its on my laptop and has basically taken control it took away the control panel and wont let me down load any antivirus software.
i'm battling this malware right now! can't get it off and it's getting annoying. my spyware/virus protection have erased everthing except this one! grrr.
Not sure if i had tha same thing...but mines was Antivirus XP 2008 i think, changed my background for good. tried changing it back but that SAME background flooded my desktop everytime! i had a hard time gettin rid of it, N McAffe was no help. so i got new equipment to rid of it and now it works just fine. PC Tools Spyware Doctor is the best, i recommend it.
This is when I can embrace my MacBook and smile. Mac runs just like a PC, but better w/o the headaches. =D
Whenever i get a pop up like this I end task - too risky to hit anything in that pop up box.
If there is so much information regarding this type of malware/spyware, why hasn't anyone gone after these companies like windefender to eliminate the problem at the source?
It happened to me. my laptop is toast now. there should be a way to find the creater of this and put them in jail.
this is why Macs are better
The developers of this type of malware should be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. They should be fined and made to pay back any monies they may have collected via their scams. The anything-goes mentality employed by these crooks in duping people with their rip-off schemes needs to be addressed; this kind of stuff has gotten to be epidemic and it's becoming increasingly difficult to tell legitimate programs from malware.
This is old news. The same thing hap pend to my brother about 2 years ago. He paid a about 60 bucks to have it removed. He is not that computer savvy. They look fake to me.....
I had this happen to me, and somehow it is linked to a Trojan. I had to take my computer to a specialist to get this thing cleaned out of the system. It was bad..... But i got Malwarebytes and it has helped alot..
