Concerns rising over greenhouse gas from HDTVs

Just when you thought your carbon footprint was the only thing you had to worry about in the fight vs. global warming, now comes news that another rare gas classified as a greenhouse emission and responsible for warming effects is dramatically on the rise. This one's not spewing out of cars and power plants: It's coming from the production processes that create flat panel televisions and some other electronics.

Nitrogen trifluoride (NF3) has historically been a very minor greenhouse gas, representing just 0.02 parts per trillion in our air. But in 30 years, that figure has risen to 0.454 parts per trillion. That still sounds awfully small, but NF3 is a far more powerful molecule when it comes to locking heat into the atmosphere: At an estimated 17,000 times the power of CO2 at blocking heat from escaping the atmosphere, it's now estimated to be responsible for 0.15 percent of human-caused global warming despite its minuscule proportions in the atmosphere. And all of those numbers are rapidly on the rise.

Even more cause for concern comes not just from the fact that NF3 arises from the production of a very popular item -- flat screen TVs -- but because the Kyoto protocol (to which most of the industrialized world adheres, but not the U.S.) does not regulate NF3's use. Back in 1997, nitrogen trifluoride wasn't an issue. In fact, NF3 became popular because it is an alternative to another set of greenhouse gases called perfluorocarbons, making the cure to the problem look potentially worse than the disease.

Scientists are now hoping to gain a more accurate understanding of how much NF3 is being used in industrial operations, plus have NF3 come under Kyoto regulations.

now wait a minute . . . when was it absolutely determined that global warming is caused by man? . . . i don't recall plasma tv's being aroung during the last significant period of warming 1500 years ago . . . or 1500 years before that . . . in the future, the writer should refrain from using definite language when referencing what is still a theoretical position . . .

I wonder how Polar Bears survived when the earth was far far warmer than it is now on this planet? Give it a break Chris nobody is falling for this junk science anymore. Why don't you stress over cow farts instead of nitrogen trifluoride? I've got to go finish watching the Phillies beat the Rays on my flatscreen.

Its amazing the things people fall for and call it truth. There is so much evidence to prove that the earth is not warming. there is no darn proof that MAN is causing it...ITS A CYCLE CHRIS, CHECK HISTORY... Christopher Null should feel ashamed of himself for writing such crap and calling himself a journalist... investigate chris and bring the other side... meanwhile i will countinue to drive my 99 ford expedition thatt gets 11 mpg, watch my 72 inch lcd hd tv, FART , and do my part to contribute to your so called global warming!!

I don't doubt that NF3 is a real problem when it is increasingly being made as a result of new manufacturing processes, however, the real point is that "the cure to the problem look potentially worse than the disease." It's not junk science, it's getting polititians involved in science issues. I was all for the concerns for the enviroment until the entire argument for reducing CO2 came about. If envormental concerns abondond the concern for CO2 and focused on quantifiable issues more people would listen. As someone working on envirmental issues, I'm ashamed of the way we have gone from clean up the envirment to anything man does is evil, and all businesses except for goverment is wrong.
