Reader Heather Fisher writes: Are the prices of flat panel TV's going to go down anytime soon? When can we expect them to go down if they are?
I'm getting mixed messages on the TV pricing issue.
First, it's pretty clear that prices will continue to slip as the holidays approach: You can thank the global economic crisis and slow demand for that. But the harsh realities of the flat-panel business would seem to indicate that there's not much further for flat panel prices to fall. Why? Because in virtually all cases, LCD screens are already being sold to TV and computer companies at prices below cost, according to the latest research from DisplaySearch, which closely tracks this industry.
In some cases the discrepancy is extreme: Panel makers are selling bare 32-inch LCD TV panels for an estimated $223 to manufacturers, but those panels cost between $248 and $256 to build. In other words: For now, the panel makers are losing up to $33 on every panel they sell.
Prices for finished TVs vary widely of course, but name-brand 32-inch LCD TVs can be found at retail for under $600, with $599 being a pretty common price point. Add in labor and the additional materials that go into a finished TV, distribution costs, and markup from the retailer, and there really isn't a lot of fat left in television prices. (Very large TVs are the exception, so if you're looking for bargains, shop smaller.)
Now here's the curious flipside. According to a blog post on the very same topic at the New York Times, another researcher, also at DisplaySearch, says that prices are likely going to plummet in the next few weeks. According the post, this researchers says prices on 32-inch TVs could hit between $399 and $499.
That would be an enormous drop, and it almost sounds too good (for shoppers) to be true. Again, the reasons are all about trying to salvage sales in the fourth quarter... but the story also alludes to the fact that the biggest discounts will be in the bare-bones, off-brand, stripped-down TVs. You'll get good enough picture quality, but don't expect, say, 120Hz operation, multiple HDMI inputs, and so on.
The most likely outcome is that off-brand models will fall quite a bit, but name brand sets will have more modest price cuts. (I'm deeply skeptical that we'll see 32-inch LCDs hit $399 aside from the occasional Black Friday sale, but that's a gut reaction.) Is it worth it to wait a few weeks to save 50 bucks on the price of a TV? How willing you are to brave holiday crowds and fight over what could become hotly desired goodies may have to dictate your next move.

Actually there is no need to fight the crowd for sales. most stores price match up to 30 days from when you buy as long as its same model, so simple choose a model that is at several retailers and buy it the second week of december and then check the ads for sales on your model then when it goes on sale go to the short line at cust service and get the difference back plus a % of the difference depending on where you buy the TV. This is the best way to enjoy your TV and still get the price you want without the hassle.
You must be a Wall Street fat cat because $50 is nice savings for me with the price of thing's. If you have $50 you don't need, give to a food bank or someone who truly need's help right now !!!!!
just bought a 50 in with stand at walmart 998 and free financing
LCD's suck. And shopping at Wal-mart is un-American.
I think the above posted comments are from people selling LCD TVs. This is not an article. This is just an ad for TVs. Recycle your old TVs. The lead in old TVs pollutes landfills and aquifers. Thank you!
Actually, I can't wait to buy my FIRST ever big screen. I guess because of the Economy, most stocks are full of unsold TV's, I may get TWO for the price of one, imagine a 32" PC monitor/TV for less than the cost of a plain flat screen. I won't buy refurbished, because of the short warrantee. I may wait until Superbowl, or not!
Warantee is what it's all about. we bought a Polaroid 32"TDA-03211C with built in dvd last February. It devoped a problem in April. They sent a service tech. from 30 miles away within 2 days. The problem was not repairable. Two days later a new unit was rec'd via Fed-Ex with pre-paid re-shipping paperwork. The best service I have ever received. This unit was purchased at Wal-Mart, but the service came from Polaroid service in Florida. We live in New Mexico. The vidio/audio is great and we'll be buying another @690.00 because they totally back up their product.
bull bull bull , no way they are losing money on making tv's they would be out of business. dumb dumb dumb
I think the author is misjudging some possible prices, There have been 32 in HDTV's seeling at times for 399 or less for 2 years now. Granted , it's not often , but yes, it does happen, Last holiday season I bought a very nice 37 in flat screen with multiple hdmi 's and lots of nice features for 549.95. That was with a 3 yr warranty. One way to save extra 10 percent even on lowest prices is to apply for the credit card from the place you are planning on buying tv from. Many times they give an extra 10 percent off ( on top of sale price) . My guess is that the 46 or 50 inch willbe the best deals this season. Why waste 400 bucks on a 32? spend 200 more and live a little. I just wish ev eryone had a Fry's nearby:)
Thats funny about the Browns!! Its even better watching them lose now!!
I,ve been waiting for black friday,,,,and I,ve heard you need to get a 1080p, or it,s a waste of money. Because our pictures will shrink in Feb.just like our choice of dvd,s wide screen or full screen,,,we wont get full screens unless we get a 1080p? Is this true?
Thanks for the article I've been wanting one of those tvs forever and just couldn' afford it. I will be searching very soon.
Wow! I can't believe what I'm hearing. All of you people who are looking for the best "Deal" need to remember a couple of things. First and foremost, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! Second, go ahead and find it online. A lot of retailers these days will drop their price to get the sale. You may not get the same price but at least you'll get a deal, support a local store/company and have somehwere to bring it for warranty service! Last, while a lot of the TV's look the same, the ones that you see at Target or Welfare mart are NOT THE SAME as the ones you will see at Best Buy!
wish some one can send this lcd to NIGERIA.
Cosco has westinghouse 32 " now for $399.00 saw it todat 10-27-08
Wait till 2009. The prices will drop even more due to the transition from analog to digital in all of the US. The government will be making it more affordable for all to get a digital TV. The prices dropping before Christmas is just a ploy or incentive by the manufacturers to have the consumers buy while prices are higher before the prices drop even more drastically in early 2009. So hold on even longer...$50 savings may actually be more like $200 in savings.
I'll buy my Samsung 42' when it prices go down to $500. For now, I'll let Bestbuy hang on to it:-)
look for 1080p to become the common rez. and the average price to eventually drop for a 32 inch to 250 with 46 being about 500 to 400.with in 2 years this could happen. but lcd panel makers need to get their waste in check. still to this day 1/3 of the flat panels made are defective.
The thing about these off brands Wal-mart sells is that there is no way to repair them-if something goes wrong with it while its under warranty(usually 90 days)you get a new TV-if something goes wrong after the warranty expires(even if its just a 10 cent part)you literally throw it away-no replacement parts available and no service for the set. We in the business call those types of sets "disposable TVs". It pays to buy a slightly more expensive set(and good names come with a 12 month warranty-not 30 days)that can be serviced if needed. It also pays to shop the smaller mom and pop stores instead of the big box stores, as you will usually get a more informed staff and much better service.

We overseas dont get the effect of such price drops. By the time it gets here the price still remains the same. How i wish i can lay my hands on a 42" LCD at such low prices? Just within my pockets
