Death of the clamshell

Remember the Motorola RAZR? The famous clamshell, or flip phone, sold millions of handsets, convincing the world that the super-slim, super-light, and flippable form factor was the wave of the future.

But where are the clamshells now? In the latest research from Avian Research, none of the top 10 phones based on total monthly sales are flip models. Eight of the phones are candybar or "brick" designs, and two -- the LG Shine and LG Rumor -- are sliders.

Flip phones used to be preferred by many users because the screens wouldn't get scratched up in your pocket, it's harder to make accidental "pocket calls," and because, when opened, they're longer and can make it more natural to talk on. But now the design is considered dated, much in the way that the classic 1964 Western Electric Touch-Tone telephone is no longer in use: Though perfectly functional, it lacks modern styling and is now considered retro.

What happened? The mobile internet, that's what: Data services on cell phones means bigger screens, and those just aren't feasible on most clamshell devices. (Horizontal clamshells haven't fared too well, either due to their odd design.) If the iPhone has proven anything, it's that size -- once the most important selling point in the cell phone business -- has ceased to matter much. Consumers now want big screens, even if that means having to find bigger pants in which to store the phone.

RCR's Mike Dano reminds us of the most famous scene in 2001's Zoolander, in which Ben Stiller whips out a tiny cell phone and carefully opens it up, clamshell style. Imagine what Zoolander might instead be using today... a phone so large he'd need a burro to haul it for him. It's funny because it's true.

Dated? Retro? Well... considering the initial design was inspired by the original Star Trek series I guess that is fairly apt. And while I actually enjoy that aspect I can understand how kids and techies are not exactly going to be phased by quaintness.

pfunk, you, my friend, are obviously under 30. Most of us old timers use actually capitalization, proper grammar and real grown up words when we write. I, being the old dude that I am, like my Motorola RAZR very much and hope they do not discontinue them. Like somebody said, my phone is my phone, my computer is my computer. And yes, my funky friend, I actually know how to use a computer!

pfunk_allstar99 - you sound like the person in front of me at the checkout line that's using their blue tooth or texting, holding up the line, keeping me from getting where I need to go - because I have other places to be than a party or my next college class. Oh, by the way, I am over 30, and I have a desktop computer, a laptop (with wireless internet), and an Ipod. And I would assert that most people over the age of thirty would have a hard time from stopping a huge belly laugh long enough to call you a child.

The iphone is a joke. No new technology at all.You sheep line up to pay premium prices for old technology. Steve Jobs is a con artist and you people are suckers. I personally will not own any overpriced "i" gadget from Apple. You can always find something as good or better from a different manufacturer for at least half the cost.

This is so bogus. I guess everyone still have desktops too. Get grip or technology will leave you in the dust.

I have a NOKIA flip phone. I love it. It a great feeling to "flick" the phone open and just say "hello". Who wants to push a button, or for that matter touch a screen to answer a phone? And besides, texting is easier when the buttons are real.

pjunk_allstar99 - How old are you? 20...25? Keep livin dude. As my mom tells me when I say the same things to her as you are saying to us. I don't need a phone to have 100 options. Then I will have to pay for the service of all those options. People text too much. We have gotten away from "TALKING". I love the flip phone design whether it has a keyboard, big screen, camera etc. I don't need a pocket size computer. Waayyyyy to much communication.

There's so much crap on cell phones now you don't need. Just advertised to TEENS to make money.

For all those complaining about candybar phones accidentally dialing numbers or having scratched screens.. does no one have a lock feature on their phone? I have a Motorola Q with a screen protector and a lock feature which I almost never even use, and have never had accidentally dialed calls or screen damage.

Since a brand-spanking new phone that has the world at my fingertips will cost me more than keeping my RAZR V3xx, which is functionable just fine, I'll stick with it until a ton of money land in my pocket to spend on a new phone. I have better things to do with my money. I'm sure these new iPhones and things like that are great in some capacities but much of this country could put their money to better use than a new phone or blackberry every other month. I don't much care the style... as long as I can call, mae calls, text, and on occasion check emails and IM... and until my eyesight gets bad... don't need a huge phone to do it with...

I have a lg rumor and I love it!. i will be 28 in a few days but i dont see what age has to do with liking a phone? i think people should just buy what ever phone they like. i bought mine because it does the stuff i want, i can check my yahoo mail, go on ebay and text on the little slide out keyboard. oh yeah and talk to people.

This next gen thing is all about consolidating all your entertainment needs into a single device. sure it may be an inch bigger than the clamsheck but you don't have to carry your mp3 player, laptop, navigator, tv, pmp, romance novel, or your psp, oh yeah and your phone. But if you're like my neighbor who only enjoy knitting, then the "cellphone" is more than enough for ya.
