Death of the clamshell

Remember the Motorola RAZR? The famous clamshell, or flip phone, sold millions of handsets, convincing the world that the super-slim, super-light, and flippable form factor was the wave of the future.

But where are the clamshells now? In the latest research from Avian Research, none of the top 10 phones based on total monthly sales are flip models. Eight of the phones are candybar or "brick" designs, and two -- the LG Shine and LG Rumor -- are sliders.

Flip phones used to be preferred by many users because the screens wouldn't get scratched up in your pocket, it's harder to make accidental "pocket calls," and because, when opened, they're longer and can make it more natural to talk on. But now the design is considered dated, much in the way that the classic 1964 Western Electric Touch-Tone telephone is no longer in use: Though perfectly functional, it lacks modern styling and is now considered retro.

What happened? The mobile internet, that's what: Data services on cell phones means bigger screens, and those just aren't feasible on most clamshell devices. (Horizontal clamshells haven't fared too well, either due to their odd design.) If the iPhone has proven anything, it's that size -- once the most important selling point in the cell phone business -- has ceased to matter much. Consumers now want big screens, even if that means having to find bigger pants in which to store the phone.

RCR's Mike Dano reminds us of the most famous scene in 2001's Zoolander, in which Ben Stiller whips out a tiny cell phone and carefully opens it up, clamshell style. Imagine what Zoolander might instead be using today... a phone so large he'd need a burro to haul it for him. It's funny because it's true.

To echo the comments above, if I want a computer, I'll grab my laptop or use my desktop. I use a phone (*GASP*) as a phone, and I don't feel a compelling need to be connected to Apple fanboys through an overpriced gadget. I also don't feel the need to be ostentatious by having my overpriced fad-gadget attached to my hip so I can prove how cool I am. "You're over 30 and out of touch." No, I'm over 30 and realize that there are more important things in life than a piece of electronics which will be outdated within 2 years.

I upgraded my Razr to a Slider and I ABSOLUTELY HATE IT!!!! I keep being charged for "pocket calls". I often wear jeans or slacks and I as I squat down or sit down. The Slider connects me to the Internet / connects me to the Mall/ calls out. I recently got my phone bill and it had 20 dollars worth of Internet Data charges that were cause by the SLIDER phone... I MISS my RAZR!! Hey with Fashion one day your IN and one day your OUT... Flip phone will probably come back in next decade... BETTER than EVER ...

More, more, more, more. When does it all stop? Give me my compact flip open Samsung I can make a call and be called and I'm happy. And yes, no mistaken calls to Australia or scratched screen. Technology's a great thing, but common sense is also. I'm sure there's a small percentage of people with all the bells and whistles that NEED them. The other 99% NEED the status. Won't be long until no flip phones are available for us who only want a telephone.

Call me old, but I have a Nokia 2610. One solid phone, no extra features to break. I have a cover for it which protects rhe screen. There is a key lock feature which can be sent manually or it sets automatically when idle for a period of time. Everytime I get an upgrade I always get a Nokia; I have lots of extra chargers that I can use. I call my Nokia the Honda of cell phones, it may not be real cool but it's reliable and durable.

The phone manufacturers have brainwashed consumers into thinking they need to have a new phone every 6 months. Smarten up. This over consumerism is killing our country. It's planned obsolescence at its worse. There are more important things in life to worry about. "Oh my god, I have a clamsheck phone!!! Forget the cancer treatments, I need a new phone...NOW"

I personally like my candybar phone. i don't have to worry about accidentally dialing the phone because I have a screen protector, a beltclip, and just like spiritgirl1 was saying, I do use the lock feature on my phone. i have a blackberry and I love it, and I'm over thirty. Waaaayyy over thirty.

I have an LG Voyeger and I love it. It has a touch screen that I use sometimes, but it also has a full keyboard. Also the fact that the camera is a 2.0 meg is a plus to me because if I don't have my camera with me I take pictures with my phone. In Montana we are limited to pretty much just Verizon for our service so it works for me.

For us folks that use cell phones to actually talk on the clamsheck is fine.. I have a RAZR and I like it.. I don't like talking into a brick!!! I have friends that have I-PHONES and they don't even use all the functions.. If having a clamsheck flip phone is RETRO, the I guess I am retro... never could figure out why people needed to type on there phones, just dial the number and talk!!!!

I agree with all of you who prefer your "clamshells". I think that the iphone is neat too, but I don't like storing a phone as big as a book in my pocket or on my side for that matter. I have a MOTORAZR V9, and I love it. Great camera and crystal clear calls. Not to mention internet and more than anyone would ever need in a cell phone. Motorola is the best period.

the iphone just makes life easier. well the little things that you need done now and stuff. lets say you're late for a meeting etc. you can send an email quickly. need a number for a restaurant, you got it. wanna know how many cafe's there are around you, you got that too. you cant carry around your computer around everywhere with you. need important info, you got it. it changed everything for me when i bought one. its just a good phone to have around. still theres nothing wrong with the razr.

I own an older Motorola that I absolutely love! I'm going to be so peeved if the clamsheck phone ever goes extinct. I have long slender hands that a blackberry or slider type phone doesn't fit very well in. My cell phone is my only phone so the grip has to be comfortable. I may sound old fashioned (at age 22) but I thought a phone was supposed to be for talking, not surfing the web. If I wanted a computer I could carry around I would buy an 8 inch screen laptop and a wireless plug.

All these new techie toys are one more prime example why there are so many Americans in credit card debt up to their eyeballs these days. People complain about gas & food going up, but don't think twice about spending money for the latest 'must have' one. I am glad to see there are some folks who don't automatically buy into the marketing propaganda. Good for you.

And this is why there are so many accidents...MOST people can't even talk and drive much less TEXT. Come on the RAZR RULES!!!
