Yeah, what's the deal with all the netbooks?
If you're unfamiliar with the devices, here's the pitch: You get a small, cheap laptop with a basic set of features, limited performance, and often a small hard drive (or an even smaller amount of flash storage). Some netbooks run Windows (usually XP), some don't. And that's the sell. The emphasis: cheap.
Prices typically range from about $300 to $500, but there are exceptions on either side. As with standard laptops, the more you pay, the more you get... but at some point you get into the realm of those regular laptops, and the appeal of the netbook fades considerably.
There are numerous pros and cons to the netbook phenomenon that should impact your decision whether to buy one. First, some pros: They're cheap. Oh, I mentioned that. But they're also very portable and generally more rugged than you'd expect, which makes them great for people looking for a second laptop to use as a "getaway" computer. Just toss it in your bag and head out for that adventure weekend. If it gets lost, stolen, or broken, you're out a much smaller investment than if it had been your $2,000 Mac that you dropped into a ravine.
Now for the flipside. Netbooks are, again, cheap. To get prices down, sacrifices must be made. That means dog-slow processors, no graphics ability, (usually) no optical drive, and minimal RAM. Netbooks won't work as an emergency DVD player for the kids. Battery life is often poor (with a few exceptions). Many netbooks look more like toys than real laptops, so they aren't appropriate for business users. And the smaller the keyboard gets, the harder it is to type. On machines with an 8.9-inch screen (the smallest and typical standard among netbooks), touch-typing is pretty much impossible. Then there's the OS issue. While some netbooks run Windows, many run Linux. Whether that's a pro or con depends on your opinion of Microsoft, but many users dislike having to learn a new operating system and instead prefer the familiarity of Windows.
Should you buy one? Tough question, but I highly recommend that if you do, you consider a model with a 10-inch screen, which will give you a less cramped experience on both the eyes and the fingers (thanks to the bigger keyboard). My two favorite models: The Asus Eee PC 1000H and the new Lenovo IdeaPad S10, both with 10.2-inch screens and Windows XP. Both are available for under $500. The Eee has much longer battery life (but weighs half a pound more), while the IdeaPad has better performance and a larger hard drive. Take your pick.

is everyone stupid or something? 'you can get a better laptop for 1-200 dollars more' uh... netbooks aren't desktop replacements... they are simple no frill laptops for on the go. enough for surfing online, using MS office... if thats not what you're looking for, don't go complaining its underpowered, too small, etc, etc...
$300-500??? Get real, you can buy a yr old model of a full laptop with a lot more power & features for that kind of money. These things are a gimic. Now if these things were $100, then they would have a lot more appeal.
I bought the Acer Netbook with Lenex O.S. because I was tired of all the other stuff clogging up my computers and slowing the net down. I only use it to surf the net. I netbook boots in 15 seconds and within 30 seconds I am wirelessly connected and surfing. I couldn't be happier.
I want something just like the IPod Touch, but bigger. Not expected to fit in your pocket, but for having on the bedside table or kitchen counter to pick up and browse ect but with bigger screen. Im sure its coming.
Just go to eBay - buy an old Mac iBook G3 for 200.00 and you've got the same thing. You may get lucky and score one with a super drive (that plays and burns dvds) and an aircard. Memory and HD are all upgradeable.
Own Acer Aspire One, 1.6Ghz intel atom processor 120 gb HDD 1Gb of ram webcam. love it. I also own 4 other laptops. (The first laptop I own sports a 1.6Ghz cPU and 30 GB HD, CDRW/DVD) so the rest of them have better spect then this one. I have to say this Acer Netbook is my favorite. I am already carrying 20 pounds of other books to school. I don't need another 6 pound laptop on my shoulder. If you say those tiny notebook lacks of graphic ability, you got to be KIDDING ME! who the heck in their right mind will play Halo on this! This is meant to be a word processor/net surfing machine! (I use it to read e-books and PDFs). and Yes, I can do my Excel, homeworks, just fine. Beside, I can be more focus doing my homework if I have a computer that can't play games. ;)
I haved the Dell Inspiron 910. I love it. I am on it now. I do not notice the smaller keyboard. It is easy to carry and I do not feel like I have to pack an extra suitcase when I travel. I am in a Master's program online so I use it often. I paid a little more for mine at $600.00 with all the upgrades. But I sold my larger my 17" and paid for this one so it worked fine for me. I would recommend this computer.
I recently purchased an Acer Aspire One for $399 and it's awesome! It comes with Windows XP and a 160GB hard drive. It also has a 6-cell batter for extended battery life. I also have a MacBook pro, but when you are on the train or on the plane, you can't go wrong with a mini laptop.
I just got an Aspire One and we love it. Its great on battery life only about 350$ and it runs XP standard OS. It even has an expandable sdram slot for more memory ( we added a 8g hdsd card) I would say get a ASPIRE ONE. Staples has them for $350 and if you get the nano wireless mouse you will never have the typical huge wireless m ouse thing sticking out of the side of your machine. Hope this helped some of you!!
How worthless and silly these things are. Not as silly as ZIP drives, but as silly or even more so than those old pocket PC's and Plam Pilots. You actually recommending spending $500 on one of these stupid things??? Spend $600 and get a smallish laptop, you'll be much happier with it.
Its a good thing there is a solution to these huge laptops.
I bought the 7 in. Asus EEE Pc for my 7yr old - his small hands fit the small keyboard and he taught himself the Linux system, having no preconceived loyalty to Windows - and he loves it. It has help get him computer literate and he can surf all his favorite websites and do research for school. But when I buy myself a laptop, I'm going Dell!
Why not have your cake and eat it too? Get an off-lease laptop from eBay for under $300 that sold originally for over two grand!
I have a laptop that plays movies for little kids! It's a GateWay something something.... I forgot the model type, because we got it like, i don't know..... 2 years ago.
who wants to go camping with your laptop.....so you can do work??????
Not worth the effort. Many branded name regular size laptops can drop to as little as $350 at sale events.
OK. Buy a stolen laptop on eBay and support the criminals. Great idea. anus. "Off lease" ??? horse hockey.
Who in their right mind would spend $500 on one of these toys when you can get a nicely equipped laptop for nearly the same price? When I bought my new HP 6500 last year it came with a 150GB HD, 1GB of Ram, nvidia card, core duo intel processor, DVD player/Burner, lightscribe, webcam, removeable remote control (for watching movies across the room I guess), 3 usb ports, 56k modem, high speed modem, wireless modem, and a 15" monitor... and for only $650. Since that time I've seen them even cheaper than that. Now don't get me wrong, if I could buy one of these mini notebooks for say $100 - $150, I might consider it, but only to do word processing on... it looks like they'd handle that as long as the battery had a long life - otherwise why would anyone bother with these cute toys?
I have a dell mini that I like for traveling. It gives me quick internet access without the weight of my laptop.
