How They Steal Your ATM Card (With Pics!)

Maybe my parents were right in refusing to get an ATM card for close to a decade. ATM fraud is the latest craze (I've written about ATM scams previously) in petty theft. Despite the security cameras, thieves seem to be targeting ATMs in record numbers, probably because the end result—cold, hard cash—is impossible to trace (unlike a stolen credit card) and loses none of its value when liquidated (unlike your Barry Manilow record collection).

The last scam I wrote about used an MP3 player to record bank account numbers and PIN codes. This scam, which seems much more commonplace, is far less high-tech. But rather than explaining at length, take a look at this series of security cam pictures, to see how a thief does the job. In a nutshell: He inserts a sliver of film into the slot, which traps your card when you insert it. Once it's stuck, he asks if you need help, gets you to give up your PIN code, and snags the card after you've left the machine, having given up hope. These little pieces of film are known as "Lebanese Loops."

The Lebanese Loop is actually a pretty crude method for stealing cards. I linked to it in the prior post, but I'll link to it again, just because the warning bears repeating: Thieves can craft clever pieces of equipment that look just like the ATM they're targeting and mount them right on the front of the bank machine. Check out this series of photos from my old alma mater, which includes a device to copy your card and photograph you while you enter your PIN code, leaving you none the wiser.

Bottom line: If you see anything that looks out of place on an ATM you're using, don't insert your card into it, and inform your bank (or the establishment you're in) immediately. Be safe out there!

Very informative. But my case is different. I tried to withraw cash. It was not delivered by the machine. The amount was deducted. I did not recover the lost amount.

Good info. What I'd suggest, is if someone tries that, just whip out your cell fone, and dial 911, get the POS put in jail!

Good article, but I wish there was more elaboration on what "anything out of place" would constitute. Like, how can you tell if the film has been put in the ATM?

This video is from 2001--look in the upper left-hand corner! This has been going around on email for some months now, I cannot believe no one checked out the validity of the information before putting it on a nationwide webpage!! The video is not from this country as well as having been taken care of by the police YEARS AGO! Seriously!

here's some better advice don't be a dumbass and give anyone your pin number. This is like the first thing the bank tells you when you get the card. Read instructions if you have a problem call the number on the ATM don't just sit there and ask a stranger what to do. This article is GARBAGE. Oh yeah the pictures I don't know about you but I stand in front of the key pad when typing my # in not to the side so that camera would get a nice picture of my back. PATHETIC. More hype to try and scare people.

OH MY GOD. I still cant get over the fact you have put this info on here for all to see. If you try and find any pics of this device on the www there is only 1! ALL the othere are removed for security purposes. ARE YOU MAD???? I think you may well find you have just started a hugh spate of fraud. ALTHOUGH this scam has been out there for years not many knew how to do... UNTIL NOW..

the sad thing is that most of the banks don't own the atm machines. with a problem the bank just tells y ou to get in touch with the outfit that owns the machines. How many of us don't know and assume that the bank owns the atm machines

Thanks for the info, but I have also seen another way to steel cards and that is when the thief puts some liquid glue at the opening of the card slot and when you cannot take your card out , he comes and asks to help and after trying it himself, tells you that the machine has got the card . So, when you leave he wipes the glue and gets your card ....

l don't think l want to liquidate my Barry Manilow collection, l will just wait untill it becomes so valuble that l will have to use the ATM machines more regular to collect my assets lol. Seriously thanks for the advice, l hate the fact that ATM machines are such an easy target, something more foolproof needs to be thought of.

Isn't it interesting that the picture captured, not from the US but far away in Italy, qualifies as the only example, and shows the victim as White and the criminal as Black. I guess there couldn't be a better example. How stereotypical...well done!

Maybe what we need is a society that doesn't use the ATM in order to buy a pack of gum. I work in an office doing much notary public work and I am amazed at how many people walk around without a dollar in their pocket. Every day 2 or 3 people ask me where the ATM is because they need $2. Not hard to find since there are 200 ATMs within a 2 block radius, just waiting to rob the victim, whether legally through a bank fee or by the latest con.

If all of our cards -SS, Credit ,ID ,Drivers Lic.Etc had our finger print on them as well as all having just our ss. number as the main number the theft would stop. Too Simple.

Thanks for the info. It was indeed something interesting to know about. Is there any means we can stop this theft?
