Reader Lisa writes: I read your Wi-Fi Security Made Easy story. But I do not know my original password that my router came with. How can I change the administrator password now? My friend installed the router about three years ago and I have lost touch with him. Is there another way to find out what my original administrator password was so that I can now change it?
Chances are your friend changed the administrator password, but you should try the default password just in case. The default password is listed in your manual, or you can find it online: Search for "router make and model number default password" or try this handy default password list. The vendor's web site will have the password for you as well.
If that password doesn't work, you'll have to reset the router to return it to its original factory settings (which will also cause the default password to be restored). Note that you'll lose any settings like WEP/WPA changes, your SSID, and everything else. Resetting the router is the nuclear option, but since it can be reconfigured in 10 minutes or so, it really isn't that scary. I know of no way to recover an administrator password without resetting the router.
Most routers can be reset with a simple procedure that varies little from product to product. However you should check your manual and the vendor's support site to make sure. But here's the easy way: Turn your router upside down or look on the rear for a small pinhole. It should be labeled "RESET." With the router turned on, unbend a paperclip and insert it into the hole. You will feel a small button inside, which you'll want to press with the tip of the clip. Hold the button down for 10 seconds, or until the lights on the front of the router stop blinking. The router will reboot within about a minute and be ready for configuring from its virgin state.
The only variation I've seen on this is that some products require you to turn the power off, then press and hold the reset button, then turn the power on with the reset button depressed. The rest of the instructions are the same. Try this only if the first method fails.
Note that if you just want to recover your network's wireless security key, there are a number of tools on the market for just this purpose. Check out AirSnort and WEPCrack, for example, but note that both are Linux-based (as are the vast majority of all such tools) and require relatively sophisticated knowledge of networking to use properly.

Why would you let someone else set up your wireless network!??!!!!1
I am unable to e-mail my photos and documents.the massage says my smtp could not be found, and error in 11001? help
I BOUGHT PC USED, CANT SEEM TO REMOVE OLD PROGRAMS OF PREVIOUS OWNER OR SO A SCHEDULED TASK TO CLEAN UP PC.
smtp configuration can be carried out in firewall windows and sub-windows. where as similar configurations are also needed in the administration tools, under different headings. (in computer management and component services extra. the above administration stuff can be added from your operating system's CD's (optional functions extra) when you are at your desktop first page. smtp has port 25 . perhaps the only (logical solution to the previous old softwares is to re-format that particular partition on your hard disk (at slow mode) this process shall delete all the previous softwares. shreder softwares can also do the job, but softwares might be brought back using 'undelete softwares readily available, as utilized by law-runners to capture the innocent people, by first sending un-lawfull material from the web onto their computers and then, raiding their place, confescating the computer and undeleting the (previously sent material onto that person or group of people's computer and make the person suffer for that country's criminal and not justified judicial system. (that usually earn bread by murdering innocent ones just like there used to be (or perhaps there still might be in africa, the alters, as can be seen in the court of law, where the chimpanzee (judge) sits in the center line of the court room. . so make sure you do erase objectional material (that does not include sex material) from your hard drive or first learn to prove beyond doubt the detailed explanation of how the country, or state makes innocent people serve time in jails for those crimes that they actually do not know how to commit. (including but not limited to mass murder, as that too is arranged from the other end of the internet, by altering the "content ratings" of your computer, silently making you fall for grave attempts either on your own life, or life of others. . so make sure the previously used computer must first be re-formatted and then the operating system must be re-installed. . .

Christopher, Another solution to reset the password and crack WEP keys is AirCrack. It works on Linux AND Windows, unlike AirSnort and WEPCrack. I have found that it works very well, is easy to install, and extremely easy to use. It cracks the WEP keys of the networks listed in the Windows Zero-Configuration utility. More information and the download is available at: http://www.aircrack-ng.org/ Hope it helps. -Kyle Purdy
