Lists like this are awfully subjective, but always fun to work on. As Christmas approaches, it's time to reminisce about the products that really floated my boat in 2008... and a few of the ones that made me run away screaming.
Without further ado, here are my -- completely personal -- picks for some of the best products to come from the world of technology from 2008.
The Best
Gateway MC7803u laptop - It has modest specs and average-to-good performance, but $1,000 flat gets you a gorgeous, 16-inch screen and a distinctive, classy chassis, complete with leather trim. It's altogether an excellent value and has all the features that virtually every user needs in a portable.
Rock Band 2 - Arguably the best game of the year -- I find it humbling that I listen to more music while playing Rock Band than I do on my iPod. The ongoing addition of new -- and good -- music to the game makes it an ongoing favorite at Null HQ.
Lenovo IdeaPad S10 - If you must buy a netbook, try Lenovo's outstanding mini, which is exceptionally powerful for its feature set and size and priced to move.
Intel Core i7 CPU - This new CPU is the fastest and most capable microchip on the block, hands down, and it won't melt your computer along the way. Can't wait for the mobile version to arrive in 2009.
Hulu - This web TV service really came into its own in 2008 after a slow and rocky start. YouTube gets all the press (and about 100 times the traffic), but Hulu has the full-length, high-quality commercial shows and snippets that people actually want to watch. And the player is snappier in response than anything else on the market.
Fabrik [re]drive - Environmentalism in the tech world doesn't have to mean just a good take-back program. The [re]drive is made of bamboo and recyclable aluminum, making it not just more eco-conscious than any other hard drive on the market, but better looking too.
Sony Xperia X1 - If it weren't for the $800 price tag, you'd see X1 handsets in the hands of all the digerati instead of the iPhone. (Yeah, I like the iPhone 3G, too, but the atrocious battery life is cause enough to keep it off this year's "best" list.)
Herman-Miller Embody - Can a man fall in love with a chair? Yes, yes he can.
The Worst
Blu-ray - I'm happy to see that Blu-ray players have come down in price... but the media has not, and there's no way I'm paying $25 to watch Step Brothers. Plus the technology is still, bafflingly, dog-slow to respond. There's a very loud and vocal minority that insists that Blu-ray will be a huge success. The market would seem to indicate otherwise. (And no, I am not a disgruntled HD DVD player owner; never owned one.)
Mint.com - Lots of writers hail Mint.com's finance tracking system as the best thing since Coca-Cola Classic, but after weeks with the service I've never gotten it to work right. It still can't grab all my account information from one of the biggest banks in the world... and every month I am (wrongly) chastised for spending over $5,000 on groceries, the category into which all my spending is invariably dumped.
DRM in All Its Forms - Why does DRM still exist? It's so aggravating and generates so many lawsuits that promising products like RealDVD get sued off the planet within days of launching. Three months after launch, RealDVD is still "temporarily" off the market as the company deals with a Hollywood lawsuit.

If you're bothered with Mint, go with something way better - Quicken Online.
Blu-Ray is not one of the worst products, but it will be one of the worst investments. The technology to have all video transmitted via the internet is so close that this product will be obsolete within 2 years. If investing $1,000 in the player and discs over the 12-18 month lifespan made sense, then it was a good purchase. Personally, I will wait and have all my HD media on my hard drive, playable without a special player
So...you say Blu-ray is one of the worst tech products because of $25 dollar discs but you say a $800 cell phone is one of the best.....riiiiiiiight. Good Luck with that.
The best netbook for my money is the Samsung NC10. It has a keyboard free of bizarre placement for certain keys, and the included long-life battery gives it a $50-$100 price advantage over other netbooks.
@haushausman ------ You obviously don't know anything about film or Blu-ray. Blu-ray is far from the quality of what you see in a movie theater.
Do not trust this review. I love my blueray. I watch it though my PS3. 1st theres no reason to buy a movie you haven't seen. With netflix you can have 2 all the time for under $15 a month. And 3 for around $18. My PS3 isn't slow or hard to use so I don't get it. I can't trust a list like this theres no way Blueray may not be the most exciting tec of the year but its great for movie buffs like us.
I agree that Blu-Ray media is still way overpriced. I do rent more movies than buy them and will probably do more of it if Blu-Ray or any of the other overpriced media become the staple. I bought the last year model of that Gateway laptop. LOVE IT!! I have had zero problems with it. I get everything done on it that I need to do and it is an attractive piece of equipment. I am sorry to see the company itself is doing poorly. I still have American support service if I ever need it. I am glad this dude did not get a Dell. My daughter bought a bundle deal from Dell this past summer. The laptop is a piece of junk. The support calls are in some foreign country that English is obviously not the second language, the third language, the fourth language, the fifth language, the sixth language...you get the picture!
This article is bad, and the author should feel bad for writing it. Sounds like the author is a little bitter that HD-DVD lost the format war, and wanted to take one last pot shot at blu-ray. His reasoning for listing blu-ray as bad was because discs cost $25??? Give me a break!
Blue Ray sucks. The only reason it's even mentioned is because of PS3 and look how bad that's selling. That should have been on the list too. It's not even a gaming console anymore, people bought it cause it was the cheapest blue-ray on the market. And for the record HD-DVD's were affordable and the quality was excellent and should have been the #1 format. HD=High Def=High Def Movies, Blue Ray=???
Blu Ray well i will agree it is slow I personally have a Sony BD 300 but after updating the firmware just this weekend which is suggested in every piece of software bought it works much faster. Even with the wait the end product is stellar and blows away HD-DVD so for all you whiners get over it and as someone else suggested if you dont like it stick with DVD if anything the BD prices will increase your catalog with Plummeting DVD prices. But for Blu Ray to be stated as bad technology is insane. As for prices check out your local Wal mart there are 12 titles that retail for $10.00 and prices are coming down fast so grasp the future people
I love my Blu-Ray, got the Sony one on BF @ $199 and just hooked it up to the surround sound last night, sweet. And I don't buy my blu ray movies in-store, buy them twenty bucks or less off ebay... the bidding wars on them can be quite fun ;D
How did the Roku not make it as one of the best for 2008? This is the streaming technology people have been talking about and waiting for!
I just hooked my blu-Ray player up an it's the best thing since raw nookie. Your assumption maybe be correct but for now, blu-ray is the best media device out *PERIOD* Personally, the picture is so great who cares about waiting those few extra seconds. p.s. get some better HDMI cords and try sticking with all SONY components.
Hulu's great but the player is still well below youtube....If your internet connection is slow for some reason, forget about watching a smooth show on hulu. Youtube, you hit pause and let it download....
Why is it the Blu Ray users get sooo offended & feel they have to insult you because of your opinion? Seems kind of odd I think.
I HATE MY PLAYSTATION 3 AND THE ONLY THING IT HAD GOING FOR IT WAS THE BLU RAY PLAYER.....THAT BLU RAY IS SLOW AND I NEVER USE IT ANYMORE IT IS SO MUCH CHEAPER TO USE COMCAST'S ON-DEMAND FOR HD MOVIES....GREAT ARTICLE...ALTHOUGH I DO NOT AGREE ON SOME PRODUCTS IT SEEMS YOU GAVE YOUR HONEST OPINION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Blu-Ray the worst product? Are you nuts? A disc that can hold 50 GIGA-BYTES, and HD-DVD = 30. The only reason we have ever adapted to a new format is expandability and size. Who remembers Zip drives? Now THAT was slow, but we had to have that too eh. Speed will improve with Blu-Ray. Rock Band2? See, now I know you own a Xbox 360 because anyone with a PS3 knows Metal Gear Guns of the Patriots blows everything out of the water. Not that I have anything against Xbox but man, if your going to be a reviewer you should have some tools. If I didnt know better I would guess you got paid to write those crap reviews. BTW Your logic is that of a small child. Your like that book "All I know I learned when I was 5". ~~Gag
I haven't jumped in to Blu-ray yet, but unless you have a big screen TV and surround sound, it doesn't have a lot of value. Plus, without special effects, all you are looking at is more zits on the stars and starlets. You should be able to buy DVD's with low FX content and play them on the Blu-ray (which upverts DVDs). This will save you money to buy the best movies on Blu-ray.
DualMice was really cool. and the ClapperCam was good until family sing along time every night. How can anyone not clap their hands to Grandpa got run over by a reindeer

Bought a Gateway computer once -- after six months, components failed one after the next. I'd never buy another. Don't care how cheap/fast their new laptop is.
