Major flaw revealed in Internet Explorer; users urged to switch

The major press outlets are abuzz this morning with news of a major new security flaw that affects all versions of Internet Explorer from IE5 to the latest beta of IE8. The attack has serious and far-reaching ramifications -- and they're not just theoretical attacks. In fact, the flaw is already in wide use as a tool to steal online game passwords, with some 10,000 websites infected with the code needed to take advantage of the hole in IE.

Virtually all security experts (as well as myself) are counseling users to switch to any other web browser -- none of the others are affected, including Firefox, Chrome, and Opera -- at least for the time being, though Microsoft has stubbornly said it "cannot recommend people switch due to this one flaw." Microsoft adds that it is working on a fix but has offered no ETA on when that might happen. Meanwhile it offers some suggestions for a temporary patch, including setting your Internet security zone settings to "high" and offering some complicated workarounds. (Some reports state, however, that the fixes do not actually work.)

Expedient patching or switching are essential. Security pros fear that the attack will soon spread beyond the theft of gaming passwords and into more criminal arenas, as the malicious code can be placed on any website and can be adapted to steal any password stored or entered using the browser. It's now down to the issue of time: Will Microsoft repair the problem and distribute a patch quickly enough to head off the tsunami of fraud that's about to hit or will it come too late to do any good?

Meanwhile, I'll reiterate my recommendation: Switch from Internet Explorer as soon as you can. You can always switch back once the threat is eliminated. (To clarify: You don't need to uninstall IE, just don't use it for the time being.)

I actually had this problem that he is describing and it sucks. It's called Spyware.ISpynow. It turns off all of your virus scanners and spyware scanners and it won't let you update them either. The internet barely works and it tries to get you to download a fake virus program. It also doesn't allow you to go to download any real virus programs to get rid of it. I finally was able to get to a site where people could help me and hundreds of other people had the same problem. I do remember reading one year that IE had 98% of virus/spyware problems and FireFox only had about 2%. That seems to happen every year. Firefox is all I use now. This blog sucks to post on by the way, keeps giving me an error.

I've always found Firefox to be a more stable browser anyway. It's faster and equally as compatible while surfing the web. IE has never been a particularly safe browser, so I'm in no way surprised.

ugh, internet explorer has ALWAYS been a major pain in the butt. it takes forever to load, it freezes over every little thing, and it friggin it shuts down randomly. mozilla firefox has alwayssss been good to me. XD

Myself, I use the Avant browser a lot. Firefox takes a while to come up, and I DO have Opera. Sometimes I even use IE for browsing. No passwords left on the system either. Like Chrome, but do not always use it. Some of the Spyware things, like Ad Aware, crashes in specific areas. Not sure why, maybe MSFT will fix these. Or the company that makes them.

If you people have IE "shutting down" "freezing" and "shutting down randomly" you do not have something set up correctly! Either get a geek to configure your system, or educate yourself a tiny bit instead of ----- ing, or talking about switching to a lame browser line Safari, or buy a Mac, the computer for simpletons.

One irritating reality is that many interactive government and educational websites don't function fully interactively except with IE.

Once i tried out Firefox, I never went back to Internet Explorer. Mozilla Firefox has a nice user-friendly interface, it loads pages faster, the tabs are easy to read and switch to, there are many, many plugins and add-ons that can make anyone like Firefox. I recommend switching to Firefox immediately and stop using other browsers. The only thing Microsoft makes correctly are their operating systems. Other than that try finding other third-party software to run, because most of the time Microsoft's programs will most likely have bugs and flaws.

I use IE7 and Vista. After updating Vista withSP1 I have NO problems. I also have Firefox, it's OK except for pop-ups I get on different sites that I do not get with IE7. Also what a coincidence this happening with Chrome Beta being released, Yahoo stock, and MAC trying to sell all they can for Christmas.

FINALLY! I KNEW EXPLORER WAS BAD! ...No seriously, don't listen to those Microsoft hypocrites. Switch to Firefox, Opera, Chrome and others... forever. Don't EVER use IE. And a switch in OS is also wise: Microsoft has proven they can be no longer trusted.

I agree Firefox is better, once it's up and running. Why does it take 3 times as long as IE or Chrome to initialise??

If Microsoft was junk, people wouldn't bother trying to pirate and hack it. Obviously they're doing something right in order to receive so much publicity. If you're dealing with any of the major OSes, well they're bound to have some bugs(some more serious than others). Just practice smart computing, it's not that hard really. -Have security software and keep it backed up. -If you don't know what it is or where it came from don't touch it. -don't go to shady sites or sites you don't know.

Interesting - nothing's been mentioned on any of the MS NGs today. I had made Firefox my dedicated browser 2 days ago, but it slows down my computer - or something's doing it. Better run things. Next thing we'll hear is the Windows Defender is corrupt, too. sheesh

I am not computer savy. How do I go about switching from IE to another form of internet access (i.e. Firefox etc)?
