The next big casualty in our current recessionary era is the good old state budget. Many states (including my own California) have been fiscally reckless for years, overspending ruthlessly and then trying to figure out how to make up the budget shortfalls after the fact -- and generally failing at it -- just like the federal government. Now, with sales, property, and income taxes rapidly shrinking, things are looking extremely dire as state coffers are quickly emptying out.
Case in point: The state of New York, which now faces a $15.4 billion shortfall between revenues and proposed spending -- the collapse of Wall Street (and the loss of the taxes it once generated) has hit New York especially hard. The result? Lots of budget cuts, and tons of new fees and taxes, including a new tax on the sale of digitally downloaded music and movies, per a budget proposal from Governor David Paterson.
Pundits have already dubbed it the "iPod tax" (though, oddly, it does not actually create new taxes on iPod hardware or other gadgets -- perhaps "iTunes tax" would be a better moniker). According to the proposal, new taxes would also be levied on everything from movie tickets to taxi rides to massage services.
New York has been anxious to get its tax hooks into the Internet for some time now. This summer it finally enacted a law that forces out-of-state companies to collect taxes on Internet sales to New York residents. Amazon promptly sued. That case is still pending.
Paterson's budget proposal now goes to lawmakers for approval. Any New Yorkers out there care to weigh in on the issue? No one likes new taxes, I know, but are things getting truly dire to the point where drastic measures are required?

Maybe all of the states that have budget problems, need to CUT out some of that excess spending, wage increases and just prioritize their budget with what they have. Like the rest of us. :) Let's just tax everyone and then wonder why the recession is still around a year later. Next a state reqirement on mandatory walking tax, 5cents a step.
Here in NY, we already have to pay taxes on anything bought online, through a catalog, or out of state. Regardless of whether you paid tax in another state or not, if you use an item in NY then it is considered taxable. It's called the Sales or Use Tax (line #35 on the long form). Ain't NY grand?
the quality of life in california has greatly diminished as it has become increasingly liberal . . . there is no reversal of this trend in sight . . . the rest of the country will soon follow . . .
Tax ain't gonna solve this economy crisis we are currently in...
this is all the more reason to limewire
i dont know why u would pay for songs anyways...file-sharing then syncchronizing them to just about ANY phone thats out seems just about the same.......been using my Choclate as an ipod ever since it came out....only draw back is the amount of songs......but how many songs are u really going to listen to if your out walking.....or waiting for somebody in a park.....or anything.....pros and cons on both sides....i just like my cost free/tax free music that doesnt have to be formatted to itune format
Really sad.. the Ipod tax will be nothing compared to the air-you-breath tax that Bloomberg will present if re- elected.
somebody has to make up for 650 millon dollar tax breaks to companys like AMD in upstate n.y. all this state cares about is how they can get more cash from each of us!!!!
You can figure that after these taxes are inacted and put in place that you will never see them removed. Once in place, they will always be there. The main reason the Govt. doesn't want to tax the internet is because they know it will stifle internet revenues and slow business growth on the internet, which affects the economy.
Better an honest tax than things like Arizona's new "photo radar" on all of our freeways. Supposedly for "safety" somehow, but by some strange coincidence it is expected to produce a "surplus" of several million dollars. I wouldn't care except that apparently 20% of the tickets issues are bogus! I even received one "speeding ticket" while my car was on blocks and I was overseas for several months!
EVERY state needs to do what Utah did this election and that is oust the congressmen that aren't doing anything about the issues that confront us. We kicked Cannon out and elected a newcomer, Chaffetz. Only time will tell if we made the right decision but it sent a message to Utah law makers. The rest of the states need to do the same.
We need a revolution. No more new taxes! This is getting utterly ridiculous. Yes, soon they will have an air you breathe tax because the idiot globing warming believers think that carbon dioxide (which we exhale and plants need for growth)is going to destroy the earth. So they will tax us every time we exhale so that they can vanquish that pesky air that allows all green life to thrive on earth.
It's time for govts to "clean up their own mess" first before they reach into our pocketbooks again and again to fix the problems they cause. "They" need to look for ways to reduce and eliminate wasteful spending and remove redundant, incompetent and inefficient processes. It's time for a fit and lean, healthy style of government. Is that possible?
Socialism is born by over-taxation...
Let's see if I've got this straight. The state spends a pile of money they collect from the people and businesses. Then the people and businesses have less money. So the state taxes people and businesses more. Then the people and businesses have less money. and this goes on and on....... I don't see anywhere in this equation where the state spends less money. Viva la Revolucion!
Chalk it up to the "price" of living in America! I'm amazed it took them this long to start collecting taxes on digital information.
Heres a simple concept. The states should do what the rest of us responsible people do personally. When income drops spend less money !!!! DUH !!!
This smacks of the dreaded "stamp tax" that fueled the American revolution. Where is Samuel Adams when you need him? (yeah, yeah .. I know ... making beer these days ..) Maybe we should dress like indians, march to Boston Harbor and throw our iPods into the harbor.
I love hearing people complain about taxes. Taxes pay for things you and your love ones use. Also, Obama has nothing to do with State tax law. So the "idiots" are the ones that elected their own state representatives that are proposing these increases. Morons.
