Got a great deal this holiday season on a product because of its big mail-in rebate? You might be in for a surprise when it comes time to collect.

I'm just now catching wind of this report, which notes that CPG Promotions Group, one of the largest providers of rebate services to the tech industry, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November. For some reason, this story's gotten very little press, even though CPG handled rebates for some huge names, including Costco, Home Depot, Samsung, Staples, Logitech, and Motorola.

CPG's website makes no mention of the bankruptcy and offers no information on whether pending or future rebates will be paid out. I wouldn't hold my breath; the company appears to have stopped returning all calls.

What happens now? Lawyers note that if a rebate provider goes out of business, the company originally promising the rebate (either the manufacturer or the retailer) are still liable for paying you the money and legally must make good on the promise. That said, rebates have always been a dodgy business, and virtually every company outsources these operations to a third party because they simply aren't equipped to handle the procession of thousands of claims. Without a serious threat in the form of a class action lawsuit or a crush of negative publicity involving unpaid claims, some companies may take months to get moving on this.

If you are owed a rebate from CPG that you haven't received, you're advised to take your claim back to the source to receive compensation. Some vendors, like Canon, have already made alternative arrangements for paying rebates owed by CPG. Check this list to see if you're affected and check with the specific company for further information.

    Let's blame it on some company going Chapter 11. Or, let's blame it on the customer not replying soon enough or that the form is not filled out correct. Let's just make up any BS to avoid paying the rebate. That, is what I've noticed in the past few years. I never use rebate as a function to consider the final cost because 90% the manufacturer figures a way to tell you wey you filled out the information incorrectly. Heck with them. I run from rebates!

    I agree with the last post. This bogus practice of phony mail-in rebates should be investigated. Most people don't follow up because it's not worth the time and effort, and they know it. I avoid all ompanies that have a mail-in rebate. IT'S FRAUD

    IVE ALWAYS RECEIVED EVERY SINGLE REBATE IVE SENT FOR WITH NO PROBLEM SO WHATS THE PROBLEM????

    Not surprised. My $30 rebate from Tiger Direct never happened due to their misinformation. I NEVER buy anything with a rebate because it is usually a rip off. Add the shaky economy in the mix and many of these companies will probably close before you can get it anyway. Get the discount when you pay or shop around for a better deal.

    Add a $10 rebate from Brita Faucet Filtration System to the list.. Mailed in for the rebate in Oct.. still nothing.. Will not purchase that brand again, I'll switch..

    These rebate companies make you jump through a burning hoop, blindfolded and handcuffed. If you don't cross every t and dot every i, you won't get your rebate. Even if you do, chances are that you still won't get it. They count on you just giving up, or not even sending the form in. Fry's Electronics drives me crazy with their forms.

    i never buy anything with a mail in rebate,its just another way to rip some one off

    Tiger direct got me too. I had two 40.00 rebates for monitors. Come to find out you can only have one per household. Ha it didnt say that in the ad. It went on to tell you to get online to get your rebate immediately. After 30 min of filling out junk online, it takes you to a page that says to now go ahead and mail in the rebate and wait 8 weeks. I agree with everyone I refuse to even look at anything with a mail in rebate.

    I've only done a mail in rebate once, with Verizon, and got the rebate in the time it said I would. I don't like the idea of rebates though. Also, I've noticed in the fine print a lot of companies are giving you a prepaid card with the rebate on it and not a check that you can just deposit. I hate that idea even more.

    Almost two years ago I bought a Motorola Q phone from Alltel with the promise of a $100.00 rebate. I sent all the requested stuff in and months later got a postcard stating that I had not sent in the original symbol off the box, which I had sent in, and that I had to send that in before they could process my rebate. Well, they already had the original, so I couldn't send it in. No rebate!!! Plus the phone has a Windows Operating system, which crashes, just like my computer! Sometimes it crashes and reboots itself making that loud obnoxious Windows noise in meetings, funerals and when I'm in class. I think I'll just turn it over to the Texas State Attorney General's Office and let them deal with it! The last time I filed a complaint with them, the company I complained about had such steep fines that they had to declare bankruptcy and went out of business!

    bj's also affected i already received a duplicate rebate from them with instructions not to deposit the original one from the company declaring bankrupcy

    I am waiting for my rebate from att,net for 39/00 . I bought a modem online and was told that I would get a instaNT REBATE. THAT HAS BEEN OVER 3 MONTH AGO eVELYN FORD EJFORD@ATT.NET
