PS3 settling in as #3 gaming console

One pundit famously told me this summer that 2008 would be "the year of the PlayStation 3," presuming that must-have new games and the rise of Blu-ray would turn the PS3 into, if not the top console on the market, then at least a strong #2.

Alas, things haven't turned out so well for Sony's flagship PS3: Sales of the console are down 19 percent vs. last year, and analysts are now warning that Sony may not hit its goal of selling 10 million consoles this fiscal year (which ends in March 2009).

Why the hefty decline? You can try to blame the economy at large, but that's looking in the wrong direction: Gaming has been experiencing a booming market in 2008 -- even during the recession-stricken holiday season. Sales of the Wii console this November were twice what they were in 2007, and the Xbox 360 saw sales increase 8 percent, as well (driven largely by a well-timed price cut). And those trends are likely to continue when December numbers are in.

Most analysts are looking at the hefty PS3 price tag as the reason for its misery. At a bare minimum price of $399, the PS3 is wildly more expensive than anything else on the market (and double the entry-level Xbox), and that's after some price cuts already. Yet the PS3 is said to be so expensive to make that cutting the price would further erode Sony's plummeting profitability (it's already laying off thousands of workers and shutting down factories). And Sony's old selling point -- that at $399 the PS3 is a relatively cheap way to get a Blu-ray player -- doesn't really work in an era of sub-$199 standalone Blu-ray units. The Wall Street Journal (linked above) now notes that you can get a Blu-ray player and an Xbox 360 for less than the price of a PS3.

The fatal blow could come in the form of game developers, which have limited resources and have to choose which platforms they want to develop for. It's already rare for a title to be released on all three consoles, with exclusives becoming more popular: Again, as the WSJ notes, four of the top five selling games in November were exclusive to either the Wii or the 360. And even when a PS3 version is available, that doesn't mean much, with WSJ noting, "Sony's best-selling game during the month was an action shooter game, Call of Duty: World at War. But twice as many people bought the Xbox 360 version."

With a terrible economic outlook for 2009 and the holiday season now behind us, what is Sony's next move? A huge price cut might save the PS3 from outright failure... but at what cost to the company?

It's really all a personal reference thing.... I've played games on both consoles and while the PS3 does have a built in Blue-Ray player, a few other bells and whistles and a couple of exclusives that almost make me break down and buy one, when it comes to game play I always prefer the 360. There may be only subtle differences in some games but I've always found the xbox to be superior and it takes you out of the game when playing a multi-platform title on the PS3 and just know it could be better if you were playing the 360. I can't give an opinion about gaming online because I have yet to play a PS3 game online but I am very happy with the xbox live experience. It's just me but a couple of gems on an otherwise sub-par console just isn't enough to make me buy one yet, maybe as they expand their list of titles or put more time into game development.

it's all about the games.. gears of war, and halo are consider the top games right now. and wii is just in another level... also ps3 miss up by not having features that the 360 came as a standard... its said to to say it, but the ceo of ps3 needs to get fire for not making it better then the xbox360... if it wasn't for the blu-ray the ps3 would be worth less..

There isn't that much difference between the 2 consoles other than blu ray. But xbox live more than makes up for it espcially after teaming up with netflix. And all the little goodies that you have to buy ie hard drive and hd cables that ps3 people laugh at us for having to buy and that it jacks up the price for xbox u can buy all those and the 60 gig hard drive for 300 as a package. The xbox elite is still at least 50 dollars cheaper than ps3 and it comes with 120 gig hard drive. Xbox live makes all the difference.

well PS3 just ROCKS!! ye forget to mention it also has FREE online gaming...where with the Xbox and Wii ye need to buy online time.. Further more... lot of complains about Xbox ..games get scratched by the system and become un-playeble.. so if ye want a GREAT system for a bit higher price.. or go broke on buying games that become un-playeble after some time(xbox) i think if ye do the math PS3 will cost ye less...

ps3/sony is slowly slipping off the map in console gaming. blu-ray is not the big seller everyone thought it was going to be and all of the "EXCLUSIVE" games are coming to xbox now because the companies need money to survive and keep making games so why stay to just one console?? wi-fi on a console? i don't get it. not to mention the PSP is the MOST WORTHLESS handheld out! the DS craps on it every month in sales. x-box live is worth 50 bones a year considering what we get. does ps3 have the RE5 demo yet??? if you need a blu-ray get a ps3 if you want to play games get an x-box. oh yeah by the way look up sony's losses last year! WOW! good luck sony stick to making TV's......just my opinion. thx,

Ps3 is by far better in terms of hardware, not to mention the massive amount of xbox360 system failures, how many of those system sales were people returning broken hardware. Every Xbox360 owner I know has had to have some sort of repair within 6months of purchasing the system, where as my runs perfect and has never frozen or crashed. Unfortunately I can't kill zombies on Ps3 and that makes me really sadface :(

Why doesnt anyone realize the the 360 is WAAAY more expensive than the PS3. If you buy an 80gb ps3 for 400 dollars, its a one time payment. If you buy a 360 for 299 + internet adapter 100 = $400. just as much as the ps3....BUT WAIT....what about xbox live? 60 dollars a year. 360 has these ongoing payments after you buy the console and the ps3 has this flat price of 400 dollars

I love my PS3 simply because of the games. I got a Wii when my PS2 died after 4 years to hold me over for MGS4. I got the MGS4 bundle so it is backwards compatible. As some one who is not into FPS games I don't see much on the Xbox360 that made me want to get one. I don't play online...ever so Xbox live was not a factor. Also I can't wait to see game when they start using the blue ray disks more to their capacity. They can hold more than the DVD Xbox ones. So for me it was the better choice, and I have no interest in Little Big Planet.

I love the PS3 it is severely underrated, I put a 500GB HDD in it and this console owns. It is better than a Wii with nothing but crappy party games, and the 360 while good pales in cpmparison to using my 500GB HDD to listen to every song i have and all the videos i have.
