PS3 settling in as #3 gaming console

One pundit famously told me this summer that 2008 would be "the year of the PlayStation 3," presuming that must-have new games and the rise of Blu-ray would turn the PS3 into, if not the top console on the market, then at least a strong #2.

Alas, things haven't turned out so well for Sony's flagship PS3: Sales of the console are down 19 percent vs. last year, and analysts are now warning that Sony may not hit its goal of selling 10 million consoles this fiscal year (which ends in March 2009).

Why the hefty decline? You can try to blame the economy at large, but that's looking in the wrong direction: Gaming has been experiencing a booming market in 2008 -- even during the recession-stricken holiday season. Sales of the Wii console this November were twice what they were in 2007, and the Xbox 360 saw sales increase 8 percent, as well (driven largely by a well-timed price cut). And those trends are likely to continue when December numbers are in.

Most analysts are looking at the hefty PS3 price tag as the reason for its misery. At a bare minimum price of $399, the PS3 is wildly more expensive than anything else on the market (and double the entry-level Xbox), and that's after some price cuts already. Yet the PS3 is said to be so expensive to make that cutting the price would further erode Sony's plummeting profitability (it's already laying off thousands of workers and shutting down factories). And Sony's old selling point -- that at $399 the PS3 is a relatively cheap way to get a Blu-ray player -- doesn't really work in an era of sub-$199 standalone Blu-ray units. The Wall Street Journal (linked above) now notes that you can get a Blu-ray player and an Xbox 360 for less than the price of a PS3.

The fatal blow could come in the form of game developers, which have limited resources and have to choose which platforms they want to develop for. It's already rare for a title to be released on all three consoles, with exclusives becoming more popular: Again, as the WSJ notes, four of the top five selling games in November were exclusive to either the Wii or the 360. And even when a PS3 version is available, that doesn't mean much, with WSJ noting, "Sony's best-selling game during the month was an action shooter game, Call of Duty: World at War. But twice as many people bought the Xbox 360 version."

With a terrible economic outlook for 2009 and the holiday season now behind us, what is Sony's next move? A huge price cut might save the PS3 from outright failure... but at what cost to the company?

I bought the original playstation and the PS2. I haven't and wouldn't buy the PS3 because it is so expensive. I'm not a 'hard core gamer' or anything like that, I just like to play realistic games with good graphics and I can get that on an xbox - although I wouldn't buy one of those either, for reasons I won't go into here!

the price tag is a big reason why i'm not playing my ps3 yet, even so i'm still a sony fan either way, xbox just understand how nice it is to play my old games on my new system instead of pulling out the old game console. even so gears of war looks awsome, too bad i'll be waiting for less exspensive ps3.........

Any real gamer knows the QUALITY of the PS3 will keep it on the market long after the 360. My 360 has been in the shop TWICE for 4-6 weeks at a time because the harddrive kept crashing. Then overheating issues. We just were sent another box to ship it out again because it has the ring of death now. Also, when you call XBOX to get your shipping supplies, you have to jump through a bunch of hoops with somone from India who can speak about 10% English. Don't go on the cheap when deciding your game console. the PS3 has quality that will far surpass the 360. Plus, FREE gaming online!

For me in Sweden I think that one thing that the PS3 isn't doing that everyone else is doing is MARKETING! I haven't seen a commercial or any kind of attempt to get people to buy a PS3. Is Sony thinking that they can just ride on some wave of fortune and that costumers is going to pop up out of nowhere just because it's a Sony Playstation?

Guys, I need advice: my 5-year old is starting to show interest in games, and I want to buy him PS3, XBOX or Wii. Any advice here? I'm inclined towards Wii since I want him to get up from the couch and move his muscles around...

I just purchased a PS3 for myself for Christmas. I was able to remove my first generation Xbox and my DVD player and replace them with one unit. I ordered an HDMI cable for under $7 from monoprice.com and have full HD in gaming and bluray. I use the digital optical out for surround sound in the games and movies. I have 2 nephews that purchased the Xbox 360 and both have experienced the red rings of death and neither have sent them back for repair yet. I am not a hard core gamer but the ability to have bluray AND a gaming system sold me. Do your research and determine what type of gamer you are. Everything I've read says big time gamer get an Xbox 360 and pray for no rings of death. And yes, do the math on what you are actually getting. The wireless internet connection alone is $99. I bought an 80gig PS3, an extra controler and the bluetooth remote for $530. And with the $7 HDMI cable, pretty good value in my opinion.

I think you forgot to take into account the reliability issues of the 360 vs. the PS3. You get what you pay for with the 360, theres no fatal red rings on the PS3

I knew i should have got a PS3 when they were backwards compatible with old games, i think thats the only reason that i would have got one. As for Blu Ray i dont want to spend 40 bucks for a dam movie.... Personally I have no preference, i like any console that has fun games, if i could have them all i would, but for the money and gameplay i just stick with my xbox. Plus Xbox Live has more fame with gamers and most of my friend that game. I wish sony would do what they do best an create some neat game or option for their console (without having to buy these odd adapters and such). Sony Microsoft in innovation.

psunjka: Buy the Wii for the kids. So they do not end up like the overweight, pimply, unsociable misfits like the hard core PS3 and XBOX 360 gamers are. Buy the game system for fun and recreation. Hard core gamers do not like the Wii because it forces them to stand up and move around. Your child will turn into a zombie if the system is used as a babysitter.

"It's already rare for a title to be released on all three consoles, with exclusives becoming more popular". That is just not true. At least 90% of games these days are multiplatform. It's way too expensive to make exclusive games these days for just one console. It's rare for any current console to have an exclusive anymore. Sony is already in the process of planning another price cut for 2009 since they are figuring out ways to make the console cheaper with less parts. I really can't see the PlayStation 3 as a failure even if it is in 3rd place. Although it doesn't really seem like there are many good games worth playing for PS3 right now. :(

Ok first off I own all 3 consoles and it what your into that matters if you play first person shooters get an xbox, if your into everthing get a ps3, an if you want inventiveness and a new way to play get the wii. However the ps3 is by far the better system, first off I have all 3 systems hooked up on the same 42in sony bravia with hdmi cables and optical audio and the ps3 blows the xbox away. Secondly, no one has mentioned that the ps3 upconverts dvds as well so add that to the list of things you have to buy with the xbox. Finally, I work in the computer web design and programming field and know in 3yrs when there's a new xbox and playstation out I can take my ps3 apart and create a sick $1500-2000 computer with it. Which will not only cover the money I've spent on it but also my next console, checkmate.

Why is everybody Dogging the PS3 at $400 does anybody remember the Neo-Geo at $650? with games at $200 a pop??

I own 2 a 60GB (first run), and a 160GB and I don't see what the point of saying that the sales are dropping or it is in 3rd place or whatever. It still doesn't take away from the actual fact that the PS3 is the strongest console out on the market period. I haven't read any articles on 360s or Wiis being clustered to supercomputer processing levels like the PS3. The PS3 may not be as cheap as a 360 and the cost of a standalone bluray player, but it certainly will not be less than the 250 they were selling the consoles on sonysyle.com 399 less 150 rebate offer. Last prices I checked were 250 on Wii, and 199 on bland 360's.

A Blu Ray Player for $199?? Tell me where I can find that. I was just at Best Buy and they are $300. PS3 is still a great deal. You pay for quality.

  • 40 Posted by harryonekenobi on Thu Sep 3, 2009 4:16PM EDT Report Abuse

Sony has been always expensive. $400 for a console is too much. Sony must pull down the price. Maybe offer a unit without Blu-Ray. Blu-Rays are getting cheap enough and people are not buying the alternative of a PS3 for this. Sony must focus on gamers budget and try to attract Mothers of younger audience offering family games at cheaper price. Although I prefer the PS3 I probably will soon buy a XBOX 360 due to the price.

Twice as many COD:WAW were sold for 360 than PS3. I think the only game that came out on PS3 exclusively worth playing was MGS4....and its only a matter of time before Xbox scoops that up as well. Halo, gears of war, fable, just to name a few....will never be on PS3. The graphics comparison is still in 360's favor. My buddy has a PS3 and since blu-ray discs are still expensive it sits collecting dust in his house and he plays my 360. Ring the bell...school's in sucker.

people also fail to realize that if you are so inclined you turn your ps3 into a fricking computer ! Ps3 alows you to applie other operating systems on it, my buddy put lynunx o.s. on his and he can still game like normal and has a fully functionall computer all for $600 bucks !! Gaming computers alone are over $1200 ! Both for $600 plus a $300 blue-ray player! You can't beat that !!

  • 44 Posted by fogfko on Thu Sep 3, 2009 4:01PM EDT Report Abuse

When i checked into it sure, you can get a low quality blue-ray player and a fairly basic Xbox 360 but i would rather with some savvy shopping get a Playstation 3 for a little more with built in wireless.

  • 45 Posted by mmillette92 on Thu Sep 3, 2009 7:24PM EDT Report Abuse

The reason 360 is selling more then PS3 is because you need to buy a new 360 every year after the first one breaks.
