PS3 settling in as #3 gaming console

One pundit famously told me this summer that 2008 would be "the year of the PlayStation 3," presuming that must-have new games and the rise of Blu-ray would turn the PS3 into, if not the top console on the market, then at least a strong #2.

Alas, things haven't turned out so well for Sony's flagship PS3: Sales of the console are down 19 percent vs. last year, and analysts are now warning that Sony may not hit its goal of selling 10 million consoles this fiscal year (which ends in March 2009).

Why the hefty decline? You can try to blame the economy at large, but that's looking in the wrong direction: Gaming has been experiencing a booming market in 2008 -- even during the recession-stricken holiday season. Sales of the Wii console this November were twice what they were in 2007, and the Xbox 360 saw sales increase 8 percent, as well (driven largely by a well-timed price cut). And those trends are likely to continue when December numbers are in.

Most analysts are looking at the hefty PS3 price tag as the reason for its misery. At a bare minimum price of $399, the PS3 is wildly more expensive than anything else on the market (and double the entry-level Xbox), and that's after some price cuts already. Yet the PS3 is said to be so expensive to make that cutting the price would further erode Sony's plummeting profitability (it's already laying off thousands of workers and shutting down factories). And Sony's old selling point -- that at $399 the PS3 is a relatively cheap way to get a Blu-ray player -- doesn't really work in an era of sub-$199 standalone Blu-ray units. The Wall Street Journal (linked above) now notes that you can get a Blu-ray player and an Xbox 360 for less than the price of a PS3.

The fatal blow could come in the form of game developers, which have limited resources and have to choose which platforms they want to develop for. It's already rare for a title to be released on all three consoles, with exclusives becoming more popular: Again, as the WSJ notes, four of the top five selling games in November were exclusive to either the Wii or the 360. And even when a PS3 version is available, that doesn't mean much, with WSJ noting, "Sony's best-selling game during the month was an action shooter game, Call of Duty: World at War. But twice as many people bought the Xbox 360 version."

With a terrible economic outlook for 2009 and the holiday season now behind us, what is Sony's next move? A huge price cut might save the PS3 from outright failure... but at what cost to the company?

LOL At jruckenbrod ur such a cry baby The PS3 sucks and no one wants to develop for its crappy architecture the only reason PS# has any exclusives is because sony pays out the wazoo to get it.

"Halo, gears of war, fable, just to name a few....will never be on PS3" That's because Sony doesn't want those crappy games running on their system. Take your Xsux and stick it where the sun don't shine!

Just a follow-up to my original post. The PS3 will handle all HD audio codecs and pass-them-off to your surround system as Linear PCM, and that has to be selected instead of Bitstream audio mode. Works very nicely. Very nicely indeed. r1derbike

PS3 should utilize a LINUX based OS and will become a computer based system that will allow for the 8 CPU functions to be hurled into the PC market place. It is basically a PC in waiting. It's coming though. A TV, PC, game machine, blue ray is the best thing Sony can hope for. An all in one .

It seems the only way Sony fanboys can justify the ps3 is by telling us about what they can do with it in the future and the hardware inside. But I cannot see one Ps3 fanboy arguing there case based on games, after all it is a games console first, not a blu ray player, or a posh pc waiting to happen, but a games console. So the SPARTAN of next gen console gaming is the XBOX 360.

a few months ago i was torn between getting a ps3 or a xbox 360 and without even knowing the price of the ps3 or chose the xbox. Why??? Multiplayer. very few people want to be isolated even when playing video games. Xbox Live is such a better multiplayer and social expierence then playstation online think about it video games and friends vs video games and the couch which 1 would you chose?

  • 60 Posted by kalifornia_royal on Thu Sep 3, 2009 4:46PM EDT Report Abuse

Also Xbox is better than PS3 but far from completely superior all of the hardware defects like ring of death and disk eater make it a far from perfect system however it is the games that are made for the Xbox and the far superior multiplayer that sets it apart from sony

Hmmm, no good games exclusive to PS3? How about MGS4, Little Big Planet, Ratchet & Clank, Resistance and Killzone 2, which is due out in February and will completely blow away anything the SuxBox has to offer. As for the new CoD game not selling as well on the PS3, maybe it's because most of us are still busy playing one of the best games of the year, Resistance 2, which came out in early November. Maybe it's simply a case of no quality games for the SuxBox so their owners are forced to buy up anything decent it offers.

Granted this a different era, but I remember when Sega did the same thing too. The price was a factor, so when they released a new system they had lost the following they had built. It seems as if, PS3 is holding there pricing at a 399 for ransom.

I will not pay that $399 price for a ps3 when the xbox 360 is a much better system ! Sorry Sony
