PS3 settling in as #3 gaming console

One pundit famously told me this summer that 2008 would be "the year of the PlayStation 3," presuming that must-have new games and the rise of Blu-ray would turn the PS3 into, if not the top console on the market, then at least a strong #2.

Alas, things haven't turned out so well for Sony's flagship PS3: Sales of the console are down 19 percent vs. last year, and analysts are now warning that Sony may not hit its goal of selling 10 million consoles this fiscal year (which ends in March 2009).

Why the hefty decline? You can try to blame the economy at large, but that's looking in the wrong direction: Gaming has been experiencing a booming market in 2008 -- even during the recession-stricken holiday season. Sales of the Wii console this November were twice what they were in 2007, and the Xbox 360 saw sales increase 8 percent, as well (driven largely by a well-timed price cut). And those trends are likely to continue when December numbers are in.

Most analysts are looking at the hefty PS3 price tag as the reason for its misery. At a bare minimum price of $399, the PS3 is wildly more expensive than anything else on the market (and double the entry-level Xbox), and that's after some price cuts already. Yet the PS3 is said to be so expensive to make that cutting the price would further erode Sony's plummeting profitability (it's already laying off thousands of workers and shutting down factories). And Sony's old selling point -- that at $399 the PS3 is a relatively cheap way to get a Blu-ray player -- doesn't really work in an era of sub-$199 standalone Blu-ray units. The Wall Street Journal (linked above) now notes that you can get a Blu-ray player and an Xbox 360 for less than the price of a PS3.

The fatal blow could come in the form of game developers, which have limited resources and have to choose which platforms they want to develop for. It's already rare for a title to be released on all three consoles, with exclusives becoming more popular: Again, as the WSJ notes, four of the top five selling games in November were exclusive to either the Wii or the 360. And even when a PS3 version is available, that doesn't mean much, with WSJ noting, "Sony's best-selling game during the month was an action shooter game, Call of Duty: World at War. But twice as many people bought the Xbox 360 version."

With a terrible economic outlook for 2009 and the holiday season now behind us, what is Sony's next move? A huge price cut might save the PS3 from outright failure... but at what cost to the company?

ps3 flat out better! Free online is very nice! cause if you have your system for 3-4 years thats 200 extra you spending on 360 also you have to either by double A batteries for you controller or a 20 adapter for each controller to charge em ps3 free to charge comes with the ps3! Also free hard drive built in on cheapest model 360 you have to buy a hard drive! So after adding all that ps3 is actually cheaper!!! People don't do there research first which is proven by this article!

j-ruck got it right. You can tell by Null's juvenile defensive response that he is arrogant and ignorant. Nice combo. What he and other fanboy/hater types fail to realize is that the PS3 is ahead of the 360's pace at the same point in time despite a far higher price tag. Null and his buddies were the same clowns who were certain HD-DVD would win. They hold a grudge against the PS3 because it stands as a glaring reminder of their own personal failure. Yahoo! should be embarrassed to have such unprofessional clowns on staff.

PS3 is to games as the Pontiac Aztek is to cars

I love the defense that everything is free with the PS3...Really? Could that be why it's costing you $200 more. Nice way to try to work the numbers, but 360 got it right; offer people options and let them decide what they want to pay for. That's how you move units. Get wise! Then make some quality games.

Every single article this guy writes that is remotely about Sony are negative, Mr.Null is obviously extremely bias against sony. Besides jrukenbrod is right 360 sales have sold less per year at 8.83 million per year, but the ps3 has sold 9.41million per year (source: http://www.vgchartz.com/). Also how many of those 360 buyers were first time buyers? and how many of those were people who had to buy a new xbox because their old one got red ring? Let it all sink in. I like both systems and i h8 fan boys, i don't know why it is necessary to be so idiotic about the subject of console sales. Try both consoles and see what one you like better then go play it.

Here's the break down on how much you have to spend to get close to getting what you get with the ps3 on with a 360 199.99 (for base console) +99.99 (Wireless Networking Adapter) +49.99 (2nd wireless controller) +49.99 (EXTERNAL hd dvd player) +19.99 (to be able to charge your controller) +49.99 (hdmi cable) +59.99 (game) =$529.93 + xbox live membership $50 and up per year =$579.93 at it’s cheapest then annual fee's for membership every year after your first year. Ya let people pick what they pay for and get ripped off. and you still don't get everything the ps3 is giving you. You can get a ps3 package with all of that and more for much less.

Since 3rd party exclusives are basically dead, I'm re-thinking what system I should buy. I was a die hard PS2 fan, but now my mind is full of ?????????.

XBox live is the best thing in gaming since the Joystick. The XBox 360 is for serious gamers.

First off you have got to look at the price breakdown that redmced has posted and see the real price of a 360 to get the performance needed if you are a so called "serious gamer". Second the statement made how it is cheaper to buy 360 and a bluray player may be true, but how efficient and cost effective is it really? Let's see I want to purchase a game console and I also want the latest player in home video. Should I buy 2 more machines that have to be hooked up to my TV with twice as many wires running behind my TV or should I buy one machine that may cost just a little more and perform both functions?

I like the PS3 for its bluray but Xbox has better exclusive games like Gears and Ninja Gaiden 2. If Xbox were to have a blu-ray add-on I would get rid of the PS3.

Apply for a Sony credit card and you can get the PS3 80GB version for $250 (i.e.- $150 discount). This is a great deal and as cheap as Blu Ray players out there.

I own all the next gen consoles and I play my PS3 about 90% of the time. There is no beating the blu ray on my High Def Plasma. For gamers there can be no other choice. Unfortunately, most purchasers are far too concerned with price as opposed to quality. I bought my PS3 in 2006 when it was $600.00 and I don't regret it.

The PS3 is the best console out there, more features plus better exclusives. MGS4 is head and shuolders above any game out there, Little Big Planet is truly original, and 2009 exclusives will rock. The PS3 is behind the 360 only in North America, it is already ahead in Europe and Japan. Having the mediocre console ahead in the country that had George W Bush as President for 8 years doesn´t surprise me a bit. Maybe now that we have Obama, and if Sony cuts the price just enough, the PS3 will top the 360. The Wii is different, and it´s a pathetic excuse for a video game system but hey whatever makes people happy.

So, hmmm, let's see... which would I rather have? A no-frills XBox 360 Arcade with a paltry 256MB (yes, that's megabytes, folks - welcome back to the 20th Century!) of built-in storage memory and no wi-fi network connection, sitting atop a Blu-ray player dubiously branded with the name of a lightbulb company or other cheap-and-cheerful name that quite likely isn't Profile 2.0 compliant... or a PS3 with an 80GB drive, wi-fi, future-proof Blu-ray player that's already up to Profile 2.0 and playback quality that most standalone Blu-ray players have yet to top? Not to mention a great library of games that continues to expand. Oh, but if I go for option "A" I could save myself about $20 - that is, until I wanted wi-fi connectivity, or more storage for downloadable content, or a Blu-ray player that could play BD-Live content... Hmmm...

The 360 has better sales because of A)cost B)Online play (Even if you have to pay its far better then PS online) C)Most friends have them. They had the right idea. and finally D) The games. Seriously you cant argue against Gears, Halo, ect. Sure the PS3 is nice and sure if I had the cash I would get it. Its just to expensive and why back in the day pay $600 when you can get a 360 for half the price?? It appeals to gamers on a budget haha, not all college kids have $600 but maybe $300 :) Happy New year to yall. Go 360!

Its just another story to pile on the bandwagon. Every site has something negative to say about the PS3. I understand that everyone cant afford a PS3 but dont knock it. Like someone posted earlier, for the Xbox to equal the PS3 you would end up spending more. As far as the Wii is concerned its a childrens console, of course it sells more, its what every kid wants. The other 2 consoles are geared towards teenagers and adults.

Oh dear, what has happenend here, Its has never been about the consoles children, its about the games. What is the point in arguing over which console has the better visuals, if the game is not worth a minute of your time. As for the blu-ray, sony fanboys are only rejoicing because betamax lost out in the 80s.
