PS3 settling in as #3 gaming console

One pundit famously told me this summer that 2008 would be "the year of the PlayStation 3," presuming that must-have new games and the rise of Blu-ray would turn the PS3 into, if not the top console on the market, then at least a strong #2.

Alas, things haven't turned out so well for Sony's flagship PS3: Sales of the console are down 19 percent vs. last year, and analysts are now warning that Sony may not hit its goal of selling 10 million consoles this fiscal year (which ends in March 2009).

Why the hefty decline? You can try to blame the economy at large, but that's looking in the wrong direction: Gaming has been experiencing a booming market in 2008 -- even during the recession-stricken holiday season. Sales of the Wii console this November were twice what they were in 2007, and the Xbox 360 saw sales increase 8 percent, as well (driven largely by a well-timed price cut). And those trends are likely to continue when December numbers are in.

Most analysts are looking at the hefty PS3 price tag as the reason for its misery. At a bare minimum price of $399, the PS3 is wildly more expensive than anything else on the market (and double the entry-level Xbox), and that's after some price cuts already. Yet the PS3 is said to be so expensive to make that cutting the price would further erode Sony's plummeting profitability (it's already laying off thousands of workers and shutting down factories). And Sony's old selling point -- that at $399 the PS3 is a relatively cheap way to get a Blu-ray player -- doesn't really work in an era of sub-$199 standalone Blu-ray units. The Wall Street Journal (linked above) now notes that you can get a Blu-ray player and an Xbox 360 for less than the price of a PS3.

The fatal blow could come in the form of game developers, which have limited resources and have to choose which platforms they want to develop for. It's already rare for a title to be released on all three consoles, with exclusives becoming more popular: Again, as the WSJ notes, four of the top five selling games in November were exclusive to either the Wii or the 360. And even when a PS3 version is available, that doesn't mean much, with WSJ noting, "Sony's best-selling game during the month was an action shooter game, Call of Duty: World at War. But twice as many people bought the Xbox 360 version."

With a terrible economic outlook for 2009 and the holiday season now behind us, what is Sony's next move? A huge price cut might save the PS3 from outright failure... but at what cost to the company?

Exclusive to PS3 games MGS4, Little Big Planet, Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, Killzone, God of War, Heavenly Sword, Gran Turismo. I think people fail to realize that the 399.00 is a loss, the system would retail much higher based on its actual cost. There is no comparisson to this unit compared to an Xbox360+BluRay player. On media content alone games whether exclusive to Xbox or whatever will not be able to hold as much content as a single BluRay disc, this is a fact. Developers need to catchup to the technology, the games you have seen in comparisson 360/PS3 is on two different platforms, the older one will obviously have a better image at fist becuase the developer has been accustomed to it for over a year since its release.

Mr. Null, do you actually believe you are contributing anything to the discussion, or are you just fanning the flames of discontent? Sony has built a quality console that not everyone can afford. They could have released something of less quality, but their fan base expected more. I don't mind spending $600 on a PS3. To me, it is money well spent. I can understand the more budget conscience populace thinking that they can get the cheapest Xbox and the cheapest Blu-Ray player for less than the cheapest PS3, but honestly, why would someone do that? Quality matters, and we all know you get what you pay for.

Um....and how about the 360's silent, but deadly "Red Ring of Death"? I'll take my chances with the better quality PS3 product, and spend the extra $1 to have an all-in-one product. Really, I think I can find the extra buck underneath my couch cushions.

I work at Blockbuster Video and above all, yes more people are buying the x360, but the x360 is a piece of crap. It scartches ALL games and customers come back upset that the games doesn't work when the consol itself was CRAP when they first bought it. Now PS3 is expensive, but it's rare someone comes in complaining that their console has stopped working

The PS3 is a giant waste of money. BluRay is not going to take off. It isn't the future of content delivery for HiDef and its lack of adoptation by consumers is a big indication of consumer sentiment of replacing your library with BluRay. Sony gambled on making a great system that is a complete waste of money. It's a cheap price on a good PC. It isn't comparable to a great PC. Your console should be a console that has a great library of games priced to move for any family. Microsoft and Nintendo learned the lesson. Sony seems to have forgotten and got away from its roots of the original PS. Good games, cheap. Otherwise the consumer looks to the PC.

Maybe it's because the new PS3's made in 2008 aren't backwards compatible with PS2's games. I was ready to buy one this Christmas but found out it was not compatible with PS2 games because Sony wanted to cut costs and in 2008 stopped installing the $8 piece which would make it compatable with PS2 games - so now I will buy games for my Wii!!

What a dissapointment. I held off buying a next gen gaming system until the Socom Game was coming out. I made a grave mistake..the Slant 6 Seth Luisi brainchild Socom Confrontation is a over hyped beta of a game. Many of the features that are advertised are still unavailable nearly 3 months after this game was launched. Constant hard boots of my new shiney PS3 have to be hard on this system. I don't think I will buy another PS3 or Sony product again ever. Seth Luisi and Company are no more than robbers. Sony has done nothing...Oh and when this patch does come out (1.3) look for more issues to piss the community off...Seya Sony Seth Luisi Sucks.

it all comes down to price, price and price. sony can complain they are shutting down factories all they want between sony's music and eletronics divisions and there various other intrests i think it is a load of bull. you want to sell your PS3's lower your price's. bottom line issell em for $199.00 or less. preferable less.

PS3 was a failed attempt. I have never really been a fan of the sony playstation. THe graphics are always "uncomparible" to the rival X-box 360. Price cut would definently help out sony. But that wont happen and im sure Sony wont release any more gaming systems.

I think the PS3 should be put down to a series of major developer errors, with their over ambitious design targets making the console simply too expensive the penetrate the market. And like Davsanturi mentioned, A console is just that: a console. Without third party developer support, a console will fall by the wayside very quickly. The console doesn't really matter, it is the games that are available for that particular platform. In short, don't be a mug, get an Xbox 360. It has it's problems, but each next gen console has it's pros and cons.

all i buy now are blurays and i love it, step brothers extended was only $5-6 more than the regular version on dvd, all those extras and the quality is amazing. to all the xbox tree huggers, get a clue, if you talk such crap about the ps3 you obviously havent experienced one.

I love my PS3, and I bought it mainly because it has a built-in Blu-ray player, which is awesome. I use Netflix to rent Blu-ray discs. Nothing like watching 'The Dark Knight' on my 106" projection screen using my Panasonic HD projector, while enjoying full uncompressed digital surround sound. The PS3 is clearly the most versatile gaming system, not only because of Blu-ray but because (1) It can be loaded with a Linux OS and used as a standalone computing platform; (2) Its hard disk can be upgraded very easily with off-the-shelf drives; (3) It has Motor Storm Pacific Rift, perhaps the greatest racing game ever. Besides, it looks cool.

I still like playing ALL my Duke Nukem and Silent Hill, all on one system. Watchin' movies is pretty nice also, without the hassles of switching to other units. 80 gigs rules w/ wifi:)

you know, people say that the X-box 360 has better graphics than the PS3,WRONG!. I've played both and they both have the exact same graphics execpt the PS3 is a little bit brighter And the PS3 has some great exclusive games like Resistance 2. That game has a lot of detail, crisp graphics and you can play online with 60 people at one time. Gears of War 2 is great and all but you can with what, 10 people. C'mon, 10! make it like 15 or 20 and it would sell even more but no. PS3 rules:)
