Pssst, kid! Wanna play some video games?

That's the latest come-on from the U.S. Army, which continues to refine its approach toward engaging teens and twentysomethings. Having seen amazing success with recruiting thanks to its America's Army home computer game, the military is now taking the pitch to the mall. Specifically, to the Franklin Mills shopping center in Philadelphia, where it has set up 60 gaming PCs, 19 Xbox 360s, plush couches, and "rock music" for potential recruits to enjoy.

There's even a real Humvee that players can shoot from installed as part of a 15-foot-high projected battle simulation and an Apache helicopter simulator that recruits can fly.

Sounds like a killer gaming setup... but of course there's a not-so-ulterior motive at work. It's all part of a plan to get younger kids interested in signing up for service, thinking that shooting terrorists in active combat is all part of a day's work.

Naturally, critics are out in full force, including a former Army staff sargeant, Jesse Hamltion, who accuses the Army of misleading kids with deceptive, unrealistic scenarios. Hamilton notes that recruits are unlikely to see active combat and that "the only way to simulate the heat is holding a blow dryer to your face."

Still, the move of course comes at a good time for the Army, which has struggled to fill its ranks for several years thanks to some overwhelmingly bad press. But with civilian unemployment skyrocketing and the situation in Iraq looking better than it has in ages (particularly with the prospect of troops coming home), the Army's high-tech mall paradise may actually be more than it needs to woo the young and impressionable.

The army should be required to state on their 'Video game' that if one joins up 'That it will be real and people will die when you pull the trigger there is no reset'. Also the person that dies might be them. Join at risk to your life.

If you're dumb enough to be led off to the desert to fight a bs war because of a video game, you deserve everything you get.

Wish they were around when I was younger ! An eye opener of what you may be in for if you enlist. I served 4 long years and I was sure suprised at my service time. Couldnt wait to get out, but it was an experence that has served me well and taught me a lot.

they should simulate a military funeral in Baghdad (helmet, m-16, and boots included, with dog tags!) an IED blast (concussion INCLUDED!!) your buddies brains in the back seat (you wont forget the image!) and simulate the smell of burning trash, and being shot at, then coming home and realizing that you didnt fight for your country AT ALL! "YOU COULD GET A BONUS, AND MONEY TO GO TO COLLEGE, IF YOU SURVIVE!! DUMBA$$ join the real fight/ www.ivaw.org

pathetic attempt, uncle sam... this war is worthless...join the real fight. www.ivaw.org i have no sympathy for those who are ignorant enough to join, like i was. they should simulate the other side of war, the side of losing. call me unpatriotic, i dont care, ive been there, and if you have been there, and disagree with me, tell tough luck.

apparently none of you read the news article where a young man credited "America's Army" for helping him provided aid to two injured people in a car crash. Not everything in the military is about killing. http://blog.wired.com/games/2008/01/americas-army-t.html

It is terrible, the things that the Army will do to sucker young people into enlisting. As a former soldier, I was shocked and utterly disappointed with my Army experience. I thought that I was joining something that I could be proud of, but now I'd really just like to forget about that part of my life. I would discourage patriotic young people from joining this corrupt branch of service.

It is truly amazing to me how so many ignorant people can post comments about the recruiting tactics of our military. For all of you spineless cowards who do not volunteer to serve your country, I have one suggestion..move somewhere else. If you dont like it you can move to Europe; but wait if you do that you may be required to serve your country and not volunteer. The military grooms young people into grown men and women unlike most parents these days. There is plenty more to the Army than playing shoot em up as some of you all believe. Times are changing and you all better get used to it. Yes, I am biased as I am an Army trained critical care nurse. Currently, I am a civilian and appreciate every bit of my Army training and have life long friends from it as well as a solid career path that translates to the civilian world.

Obama isn't the president yet. How can anyone attribute any of this to him?

"Also the person that dies might be them. Join at risk to your life." Or don't join at the risk of your FREEDOM....its up to you. I like to at least be somewhat free than controlled.

Okay, I got through the first 24 comments before deciding to weigh in. I don't know the exact nature of the games they're using but I do know that the Active duty Army and probably the other services USE video simulators for training. The problem I have and from what I've read is that kids today are so out of shape they can't even pass basic military fitness training. As far as the money goes, forget it, the Gov't blows more money a day then you can shake a stick at, at this is no different then Air force jet flyovers at football games.

Here's another opinion, The Brass at the Pentagon overly use Technology, they ran their computer scenario's etc, (and how much do you think that costs?) anyway, everyone thinks and wants wars to be fought via long distance and remote control when they won't be, it all comes down to boots on the ground, i.e, The Army and Marines. Yup, they a fight invading Iraq and didn't get it, now we're bogged down going door to door and I also suppose they figured they could bomb the snot out of Afghanistan and get Bin Laden, nope, he's still there, again, boots on the ground.

Maybe if the military wasn't so homophobic and let gays serve openly they wouldn't be so desperate for people. They beg unwilling young people (ie me) to sign up yet they won't let willing gays and lesbians serve openly. Pathetic. -- True, but there is still the don't ask, don't tell policy, right?

This topic is kind of funny! Lol! It doesn't accuatly hurt everyone, Because it is nothing but a video game to young kids to young adults that play video games! But it is only a matter of time for everyone in America not to have a rights, Because the Now in office President Obama has hes own personal agenda on our rights!

You all need to open your eyes and not believe that everything the news says is wrong is inherently wrong. I, personally think that this is a waste of money, but whatever works.
