Among the casualties in Microsoft's recent round of layoffs and closures was one small group which didn't make headlines but which will have a massive impact to a small, but vocal, minority of computer users. That group? The team behind the Microsoft Flight Simulator series, which has been almost completely eliminated from the Microsoft payroll.
MS Flight Simulator is notable especially for its rabid fan base: The most die-hard players organize "virtual airlines" that fly regularly-scheduled flights, much like commercial airlines, and they've been known to build ridiculously detailed cockpit simulators, spending thousands of dollars on their designs. It is also arguably the longest continuously-developed video game series ever, having been developed for 27 consecutive years, making it nothing short of a legend in the gaming community.
After earlier reports of layoffs, it has been confirmed that ACES, the in-house development studio that built the Flight Simulator and Train Simulator series, has been cut to a skeleton crew responsible merely for wrapping up affairs and closing up shop.
But curiously, Microsoft says it is still "committed to the Flight Simulator franchise," and that it will continue to invest in flying games for Windows. My suspicion is that those investments however will ultimately come in the form of gentle encouragement to outside developers and probably a sale of the franchise to another party. Flight Sim may live again, but doubtfully as an official part of Microsoft.
Best of luck to the ACES crew.

There is an Australian company called Auran who already publish a very nice alternative to the MS Train simulator. Time for the Flight Simulator to move offshore as well?
Flight Simulator was my first game on my first IBM PC. And continues to be my passion on each PC I get. It challenges me and has gotten better over time. I see a different Microsoft now. A Microsoft that has lost its way. I'll bet you that this would never have happened if Bill Gates was still running the shop. This is what happens when you have the show run by suits and bureaucrats instead of someone who came from the grassroots. Goodbye Flight Simulator! Goodbye Microsoft, your best years are over!
"FS was the one program developed by MS that I truly loved". It was actually developed by Bruce Artwick and his company SubLogic and first appeared on the Apple II and Tandy TRS-80 computers, among others. Microsoft later licensed and eventually bought it.
Wow....I remember first playing this when I was 5 when we got our first PC, it was a DOS IBM....pretty bad graphics and controls, but I played it day after day. Good times.
My system can't handle the latest version anyways... (to self :: NEED UPGRADES)
Flight simulator is one of the "better" educational computer games which may/or may not lead kids into becoming a piloting field etc. much better than those other games ie: kill a cop, steal a car etc. I feel Microsoft, which I have been a supporter of, other than for Vista, which is the worse thing they could have done, is lacking good management -
No! Does this mean no Train Simulator 2?
Years ago I was a flight instructor in the U.S. Navy. Though our equipment was many times more sophisticated than a home based simulator, these simulation systems have an important impact on air safety. Emergency scenarios (that can not be taught in real life situations) and the procedures to deal with them can only be accomplished in a simulated environment. Major airlines in the past several years have cut simulator time for preservation of money; that may result in tragedy. Microsoft has supplied a series of good home based simulator programs that provide a great resource for the private pilot and former pilots who may be relied upon in an emergency situation. I am disappointed to see that “bottom line management” means more than human life. Robert Gregory, U.S.N. Retired
Hey Harley Lady, I love the Flight simulator in the evening to free my mind up from a busy day, but another way I like to take flight is on a Harley. Can't hardly wait till my ankle heals and I get my new bike so we can be off on the road once again. Maybe this time Route 66 to Grand Canyon, Oatman, AZ to Vegas, then Pacific Coast Hwy up to Washington State. It will be a ride to remember and we'll have our legs spread for so long we'll feel like a "Hooker" Love Ya, Mean It D.T.
The Microsoft Flight Simulator series is truely amazing. it has improved dramaticaly over the last 2-3 "games" i will continue to buy and play the flight simulators for as long as I can. i gve the series a 10/10
I'm disappointed that the simulator was discontinued as I was hoping to try it out. It seems with all the money Bill has they had to lay some people off. Too bad.
I have every version of FS since version 1.0. Every PC upgrade that I have ever done has been because of FS. The gentleman in post 1 that said not every one wants to fly an airplane just doesn't get it. He obviously has never flown an airplane.
As far as lay offs.Too bad microsoft is blowing out the flight sim. If for only advertising the software they would have found it to be a massive project. Not a lot of people knew you could fly a jet or plane on a computer. I love to fly helicopters that really gets it for me. By advertising simulators on television and reaching out to people they would have found a money investment like no other.I have never seen any ads in my area on tv.You? From young to old-Amelia Earhart inspired a nation.I see commercials to inspire senior citizens to buy a computer but nothing to catch their imagination-like that would.too bad indeed but good luck to all involved. gmcrick71@yahoo.com
Man, I have had good memories from flight simulator. It would really suck if it all went away. Microsoft has continuously built more detailed environments and I just love it.
did you know you can use 360 controller in the game
The reason Microsoft is stopping the FS is very simple. Every other game they develop requires an initial cash outlay and most require another monthly outlay to play. They look at the free time you guys aren't paying Microsoft and see dollars flying out the window. All developers are going to the fee to play games for the money. Don't hold your breath to hope Microsoft changes it mind. Bill Gates has always been a down in the earth fighter for the bucks despite his newly found interest in charity work as he goes off into the sunset of life. It is highly unlikely he would spend money on FS when he can make more on Xbox fee games.
I have heard , that the microsoft flight sim team had been sacked? is this true? I am part of the flight sim comunity. i agree this is not a game, but it is an experienc to imerse yourself in, post of us wanted to be pilots but never were, there are some amazing cocpits being built, i myself am building a Boeing 737 throttle using some ideas from this site http://www.737throttle.com. just to show you how far this has gone.
Cannot belive this is happening, will be starting a thread for flight sim must live on. I know mainline games must be more proffitable for Microsoft but give us guys a chance. i feel very sad for all those who have lost their jobs , because at the end of the day putting food in our mouths is priority number one, good luck to you all and try to keep this thread alive.
Flight Sim will always be around. Id disagree with the previous comment.. I think most people would love to learn how to fly, if they can get over the fear. I used Microsoft Flight Simulator to help me obtain my pilot's license. Its an amazing way to practice skills that can only be learned in actual flight, or simulated. Pilots usually have a good amount of spending cash. Software developers know this, and will always have a new sim to sell.

At least I won't have to buy a new computer every time a new FS version comes out. Perhaps a new franchise owner could tweak the program to make it more memory-efficient.
