Macs hit with BitTorrent-embedded malware attack

For years, Mac users have long been rightfully smug about their platform's relative immunity to virus and malware attacks, but it's inevitable that those days will eventually come to an end. (As the Mac gains in popularity, it also earns more attention from malware developers, and it's this lack of malware being actively developed, not some special, inherent security, that have really kept the Mac a "safe" platform for the time being.)

Now we're seeing one of the first moderately-sized exploits to take advantage of Mac users. The iServices.A Trojan horse is an attack being distributed via BitTorrent, where it's disguised as a bootleg copy of the new iWork 09. Once installed, the malware takes administrator access and connects to remote servers over the Internet, where it can be given additional instructions as the author commands, from installing additional malware to stealing information off the Mac in question. The malware creator can also take complete remote control of any compromised machine.

Security firm Intego said that just 20,000 machines had been infected as of January 21 but that the risk of ongoing infection was "serious, and users may face extremely serious consequences" if they are stricken with the malware.

Mac users are suggested to use common sense -- that is, don't try to download and installed pirated software -- and to update any antivirus definitions immediately. If you're a Mac user and aren't using security software, well, this might be a good time to start.

As well, if you've been hit by this piece of malware, a removal tool is available here. (Please note: I have not tested it.)

Anytime that you mess around with downloading stuff from torrent sights you risk the chance of getting attack. But using Unix base systems lessen that chance. With windows you have multiple attacks on the computers across the country and the world such as the vundo trojan, fake alert, and Anti Virus 2009. These have been infecting windows systems computer even if they have protection software. They also didn't come form torrent downloads. So when it come down to it if you are worried about security moving to a mac would be better if you still want to dabble in windows use boot camp or parallels to run it on your Mac. Or you can always go with a free distribution of LINUX they are doing some amazing things with 3D desktop(openGL programming).

Give me a break! Unlike the stealthy, system-level exploits of Windows, this relies on a user's absolute foolishness. If you're going to pirate, you have no one to blame but yourself for the crap you pick-up - just like taking home that whore from the trashy bar on the seedy side of town... NOT NEWS!

Mac vs PC, blah blah yawn. They're all computers, they're all tools. And I agree with phil.seymour. If you are PIRATING software, which is theft, then you deserve whatever you get. I know PC users who have never had viruses, and it's all down to being careful. If you steal software or mp3s, I hope your CPU melts.

Bout darn Time, I'm Tired of seeing those stupid Mac Commercials, anyways. That's the whole reason Mac's being hit, by the way. Too much Publicity. Should of kept your mouths shut. One or two commercials here, couple there,... Nope. No, keeping a low profile these days isn't smart at all, is it... Or Maybe it is? Mac Users... Humble your selfs.

Haha... there was a bet between pro pirates that a bogus copy of some software for a Mac wouldn't get media attention. I can remember that conversation- now I'm laughing.

“The iServices.A Trojan horse is an attack being distributed via BitTorrent, where it's disguised as a bootleg copy of the new iWork 09.” I saw a comment on how this new Mac targeting malware is actually aiming dishonesty! Best all be aware that any download, especially via unsecured portal, can bear the potential for being nuisance. Mac-OS has enjoyed many years of immunity from nuisance attacks because malware coders weren’t interested to write their parasite codes. On the other hand, the availability of many varieties of the Windows based OS and their affordable applications created worldwide popularity in contrast to Mac’s exclusivity and somewhat prohibitive acquiring cost which gave its users the lesser exposure to malware or other software attack problem.

krarnold1028: you are insane if you believe that you cannot get malware from software that you download off of torrents.

The computer is only as smart as the Jackass sitting in front of it.Whether its a Mac or a PC.So if you download pirated software or hacked software you should at least educate yourself in what your doing.I am not for downloading pirated software or against it.This is pretty much a no brainer. Like I said its the Jackass using the keyboard and mouse..

As long as the Mac malware is not in mp3 files, I'm ok with it.

Whether I use my PC or Mac, I do NOT use torrents. As for all this raucus about Mac vs Windows. As a graphic designer I prefer Mac. That being said, while the product is good, it is so overly priced. That's why I built my own PC tower to meet my own requirements and specifications and it was way cheaper. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. In the end you guys are fighting over petty materialistic things.....

whenever i download i always scan the torrent file with avast! first. I actually have fun working with windows and don't find it frustrating in the least. I find mac's infuriating though... With itunes i feel like i'm being hustled and it's so simple to use it's boring.

Simple solution. Be an honest person, buy the real deal. Your Mac will protect you. Some of these comments made me LMFAO. Honestly, Macs dont have viruses that jump from computer to computer infecting all in sight. You have to give permission for the MALWARE to attack you computer by DOWNLOADING, AND INSTALLING the FAKE PIRATED SOFTWARE. If you are an honest person and you don't download pirated software then your in the freaking clear. TELL ME WHEN THERE IS A REAL VIRUS ATTACKING MACS. LIKE THE MILLIONS OF REAL VIRUSES ATTACKING WINDOWS PLATFORMS THIS VERY SECOND.

Just got my Mozilla Firefox browser on the MacBook hijacked by rapid-antivir-2009 by reading a Foxnews article. What a shock, and I changed to Mac to avoid this problem. Even worse, I cannot find any removal information yet. The culprits should be drawn and quartered in public and left for the birds to pick their bones.

Mac isn't tenfold more secure than Sun, Palm, Unix, Linux, Windows or any other OS. It is simply whether or not those security holes have been widely abused. All operating systems are insecure it's whether the supporter patch quickly and the priority of the attackers. Macintosh hasn't suddenly lost its edge but instead that more blackhats are moving into the Mac scene.

It seems the only two criteria being consistently offered as evidence that some OS other than MacOS is better, have been the cost of the hardware/software and how it performs with GAMES? For those of us who earn a living with our computers the cost of peace of mind and enjoying the user experience is so worth the additional investment. And by the way, Microsoft is in the middle of laying off thousands of workers and serious financial difficulties. Apple just reported their most profitable quarter in their history (1st Qtr. 09). Someone seems to know how do do computers right.
