Face to face with the worst economic crisis to face the nation in decades, our leaders are hard at work trying to come to America's aid. The latest legislative salvo? A bill that would require cameraphones to make a sound "audible within a reasonable radius of the phone whenever a photograph is taken with the camera in such phone."
The bill, called the Camera Phone Predator Alert Act, is the brainchild of New York's Peter King, and it's a response to the continued popularity of voyeuristic photos snapped on the sly by those darn kids. King specifically cites adolescents being spied upon "in dressing rooms and public places" in the draft of the bill.
As well, Wired notes that a similar law is already on the books in Japan, where such behavior is practically a national pastime.
But, as Wired also notes, the prospects for King's stateside bill doesn't look entirely rosy. He has no co-sponsor for the action and, a smattering of press reports aside, there hasn't been much interest in the legislation at all.
One supposes that Congress may have other matters at the top of its mind right now than phone-wielding peeping Toms. Just a hunch.

This is absolutely ridiculous!!! alot of criminals have been busted by the sly use of the awesome contraption. the person who thought up this bill must have got busted doin somethin he shouldn't had been doin! that's like saying security cameras need to constantly beep so any shoplifters or thieves know their being taped! what friggen morons!!!!
As a school teacher who has seen practically all the abuses of a phone I never thought possible among GRADE SCHOOLERS, I think he's on the right track. I don't know exactly what kind of law it will take, but it's a topic that's going to have to be dealt with. Since most parents won't deal with, or think it's cute, and so many of our lovely populace thinking it's all someone else's fault, then it's kinda left to the government. Police yourself or be policed, either way, innocence should not be so easily dismissed. Frankly, I'd rather see them tackle this than to witness what they're going to try to do to the economy...
1. This law is already on the books in Japan. 2. Japan makes most of our electronics anyway. Given 1 & 2, shouldn't all our stuff make cute sparkly noises when they take pictures anyway. /snark Though really, the time between alert noise and "OMG don't put that camera up my skirt, you pervert" reactions probably isn't going to be enough to stop the offending shots from being taken.
Pointless as many phones come apart when dropped anyways... Disconnecting the speaker is a 30-second job.

I think they should be trying to fix the economy not our cell phones!
