Remember when Vista was announced, and Microsoft decided to release six different versions of the operating system, much to the confusion, disappointment, and ridicule of potential buyers? Well guess what? Microsoft is back with the Windows 7 strategy. What has it learned in the last three years? Pretty much nothing.
While Microsoft is touting the "two primary editions" of Windows 7 -- a Home Premium edition and a Professional (intended for business) edition -- the fact is it's sticking with the same six different versions (or SKUs, stock-keeping units) that it had for Vista.
The real difference is that Windows 7 Home Basic -- the much-reviled stripped-down version of Vista that was designed for bare-bones PCs -- is now being shunted to emerging markets only, though it will still exist. But to confuse matters, a Windows 7 Starter edition, which will run only three applications simultaneously, will also be available.
Also a glimmer of hope: Home Premium will have most of the same features you're used to in Vista Home Premium, but the new Windows 7 Professional is a nice improvement over Vista Business Edition in that Windows 7 Pro will include all of the features from Home Premium (including Media Center and gaming capabilities), plus some other business-centric extras. If there's a bright spot in this news, it's that the Pro version finally looks enticing, unlike the neutered business version of Vista that was pawned off on workplaces two years ago.
But Microsoft blows it again with two more SKUs, again offering an Enterprise and Ultimate version of Windows 7, both containing features that ought to be included off the shelf in Windows 7 Professional. That means nickel-and-diming buyers once again in order to get the BitLocker encryption system.
Microsoft touts the new SKU structure as a "streamlining" of its product line, but I'm having trouble seeing how the Windows 7 lineup is much of an improvement. Things seemed to work pretty well with XP's two versions -- and the Mac folks get along fine with just one. But in an attempt to wring every last dollar out of every last customer, Microsoft again sticks us with a complicated version nightmare that no one's going to like. Is the honeymoon over already? Dang.
Engadget has a helpful comparison guide to the six versions here.
Update: Many people have written to emphasize that Windows 7 will only be available to consumers in three retail versions. While it's accurate that only three shrinkwrapped versions will be available, it's quite likely that your average user will have access to five different versions: Millions of users will use Enterprise at the office and millions more will encounter Starter on a netbook (the fastest-growing portion of the computer market). Faced then with Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate editions on a standard PC, the options quickly become overwhelming when, really, two or even one version of the software would have sufficed. Also note that I am still enthusiastic about Windows 7 on its merits -- I simply think that the version proliferation should be rethought.

Do you think it is at all possible for you to ever write a single article w/o bashing Microsoft. Get over it already. By the way, Macs suck.
Vista and 7 are landmark operating systems! After using them, I never want to return to XP! 7 enhances Vista's features quite a bit and MS should market this as not just one version (OS X pricing is way more than I want to pay) but several versions depending on a users needs, and how much they want to pay.
oops, my mistake - OS X isn't more expensive by itself than Vista... you just have to buy a 1000+ dollar piece of hardware to run it on... everything included, it's way more expensive than Vista.
Ok, I have a plan: BRING BACK XP! And 3 programs? I run about 6 every day. What about this: XP, with some of the streamlined feel of Vista? And call THAT Windows 7. But in the meantime, lets all just play GH: Wold Tour. ;)
Chris you should change your moto form "The Working Guy" to "Anti Windows Advocate". They could give this away like Linux and you'd still cry about it.
i can't wait until Mac puts windows out of business. Everything Microsoft offers is terrible. Vista.. terrible, Zune... terrible They are more about putting out as little as possible with a huge price tag that those who are not computer literate won't see the difference. They only know "Microsoft makes it." Forget about the Vista compatible issues and making it into a monopoly that only attaches to their own products. Take a hike Microsoft or at least give your users options that won't make them go broke.
Only the Home, Professional, and Ultimate versions of Win7 will be marketed towards consumers. Most computers would be sold with Professional. I don't really care about whether this is a problem. There's worse things to fume about.
I agree ! Vista is what I have and it is a joke. It is not compatibile with the online school that I attend. Th school tech had to guide me thru a back door in order for me to get to my school online. I wish I could erase Vista and download XP again.
I am testing the new ms7. So far I don't mind it. My problem is with the explorer window. I have ie8 because ms7 won't support ie7. They say that you are supposed to be able to surf the internet faster, but it is the slowest I have ever seen. I have never been so disappointed in my life. If anyone has any suggestions on how to make ie8 faster, please let me know. I have tried all the basic stuff already and calling the 800 number doesn't help either because they have no clue. thanx in advance.
well im ont really happy with all of these different systems too choose form but right now im trying windows 7 beta it claims too be the ultimate i enjoy some of newer icons in the tray way they minimize down i hope they rethink make only 2 os home ultimate and professional im not going too pay 250 for ultmate for just the way i minimize 4 icons in te tray they need too rethink the phylosophy most pc ar enow sold with 1 gb of memory no reason too go with 5 os and the companys still trying too sell pc with 512 256 mb should be tried as criminals.i hope microsoft and pc companys use their heads on this one.grimmy
@ cateyes0829 ... ditch ie8 and get firefox!
Just ANOTHER reason to stick with XP
i like the idea of a home premium and a professional version. Allows me to pinpoint quick differences and choose the right OS version quickly, instead of having to do research on each specific version.
Win7 is awesome. I have a license for Vista but I preferred the streamlined versions available to those who "know where to look..."
I was just fine with windows 98. It did everything I needed. This is stupid to change it ever couple of years. I just bought a new laptop with Vista and although I don't hate it I don't see anything special about it.
Microsoft should learn from Apple. There is one version of the Mac OS. Period. You buy it, install it, it runs, and it doesn't crash all the time. I switch to Mac's last year after saying for years that I would never do it. I have never looked back. I should have done it years earlier.
The only confusing thing about this new OS is whether it's finally time to buy a MAC.
MS has not a clue on how to write good software these days. Their golden age was in the 90's until they came up with the bright idea of hiring indian programmers at half price. Bad software + I am better than thou attitude = pissed off customers
I am running the Windows 7 Beta right now and I like it. I went to Vista kicking and screaming from XP but, I have 6 GB of RAM and it is wasted with XP. Slowly I started to like Vista after using it daily. They could have skipped Vista and gone straight to W7 from XP it would have been a much better progression. For those that like XP you will also like W7

twohlrab3 - Were you paying attention to the computing community when 95 came out? It was the worst operating system they have made to date. But to be fair, Win 95 isn't even a true OS, it is just a front-end for DOS 6.2... nothing "landmark" about that. When 98 SE *FINALLY* came out, MS had a *decent* OS to replace DOS, but Win NT 4.0's arrival gave them a REAL gui OS. Based on NT 4.0, and considering their popularity, compatibility and features, Windows 2000 pro and Windows XP pro have proven to be MS's best and most powerful OS's. Since they have (very quietly) dropped Vista, it'll be really interesting to see if they learn from the Vista mistakes. Nice job pointing out their failure so far Chris, at least with their sales model!
