Remember when Vista was announced, and Microsoft decided to release six different versions of the operating system, much to the confusion, disappointment, and ridicule of potential buyers? Well guess what? Microsoft is back with the Windows 7 strategy. What has it learned in the last three years? Pretty much nothing.
While Microsoft is touting the "two primary editions" of Windows 7 -- a Home Premium edition and a Professional (intended for business) edition -- the fact is it's sticking with the same six different versions (or SKUs, stock-keeping units) that it had for Vista.
The real difference is that Windows 7 Home Basic -- the much-reviled stripped-down version of Vista that was designed for bare-bones PCs -- is now being shunted to emerging markets only, though it will still exist. But to confuse matters, a Windows 7 Starter edition, which will run only three applications simultaneously, will also be available.
Also a glimmer of hope: Home Premium will have most of the same features you're used to in Vista Home Premium, but the new Windows 7 Professional is a nice improvement over Vista Business Edition in that Windows 7 Pro will include all of the features from Home Premium (including Media Center and gaming capabilities), plus some other business-centric extras. If there's a bright spot in this news, it's that the Pro version finally looks enticing, unlike the neutered business version of Vista that was pawned off on workplaces two years ago.
But Microsoft blows it again with two more SKUs, again offering an Enterprise and Ultimate version of Windows 7, both containing features that ought to be included off the shelf in Windows 7 Professional. That means nickel-and-diming buyers once again in order to get the BitLocker encryption system.
Microsoft touts the new SKU structure as a "streamlining" of its product line, but I'm having trouble seeing how the Windows 7 lineup is much of an improvement. Things seemed to work pretty well with XP's two versions -- and the Mac folks get along fine with just one. But in an attempt to wring every last dollar out of every last customer, Microsoft again sticks us with a complicated version nightmare that no one's going to like. Is the honeymoon over already? Dang.
Engadget has a helpful comparison guide to the six versions here.
Update: Many people have written to emphasize that Windows 7 will only be available to consumers in three retail versions. While it's accurate that only three shrinkwrapped versions will be available, it's quite likely that your average user will have access to five different versions: Millions of users will use Enterprise at the office and millions more will encounter Starter on a netbook (the fastest-growing portion of the computer market). Faced then with Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate editions on a standard PC, the options quickly become overwhelming when, really, two or even one version of the software would have sufficed. Also note that I am still enthusiastic about Windows 7 on its merits -- I simply think that the version proliferation should be rethought.

I am sticking with the XP untill something better comes along.MS affectionately known as the "Beast" havent learned a thing..
Once you go Mac- you never go back.
I will never sell my computer running XP. Period.
that s what happens when all those ceo's have so much money. they dont care, and they act like idiots. the main tasks of a new opperating system should be applications compatibility, speed improvements and security. wtf? are they on drugs or what?
And Microsoft can't figure out why so many people are bailing for Macs (and I don't own a Mac)
Until Microsoft pulls ilts haed out of its butt im sticking with XP PRo
@ "sorbjornstad": WHOA WHOA WHOA. You are so wrong. OSX upgrades are $129. That's it. Anndd... how much does an upgrade of Windows start at? And how much is it for an ACTUALLY good upgrade? Yeah... more than $129.
I am perfectly happy runnint Windows Vista Premium. Lots of folks complain about the "bugs" in it, but those that complain have never used it! But, I give Christopher Null credit. He's actually described the REAL REASON that people never made the migration to Windows Vista...if you give people too many choices, they won't know which to pick! Congratulations! Microsoft needs to hire Mr. Null as their VP of Marketing. http://www.creditmanagementworld.com
Just one more example of how much Microsoft sucks. That's why I am a Mac user. Macs run MS programs better than Microsoft.
I'll just stick to my WIN VISTA for now. Perhaps I'll even take advantage of the education discount through my university and buy a laptop while I can still get VISA.
Vista and now 7 these OS are jokes, Instead of coming up with quarky applications I wish Microsoft would just go back and continue to build on the XP OS. I use XP still and have no desire to change unless I can no longer get support.
I am feeling the same as great deal of other windows customers....I will be sticking with XP until it is no longer supported by windows. Windows 98 and ME were no longer supported in 2005, so it should be a while until XP is no longer supported. I like XP and I don't understand why Vista was even created since it is like a messed up version of XP. Why is microsoft going backwards instead of forward? Its very disappointing!
I will be running Windows XP for the rest of my life, if Microsoft keeps this up... Microsoft has forgotten what an operating system is supposed to do. Rather than continuously improving an already good set of OS's that they previously had, they have simply decided to continue taking the same junk, and throwing tons of useless gadgetry at it, along with pointless features. And if 7 is going to be as uptight about "security" as Vista was, then I dont know what the world will come to...
This is so absurd. I just got used to vista, and now their gonna go release a new freakin o.s. Most people are still running XP anyway.
XP will always be the best but VISTA has a nice look to it and i don't even want to bother with 7
I have an eMac purchased seven years which is still running strong on OSX and a new iMac that runs like a dream. Why is anyone still buying Microsoft products? You might save a little money, but in the long run, you're losing time and patience when downloading patches, anti-virus ware, anti-spy ware, etc.
I find microsofts plans to be shallow and pedantic hahahha
It would be nice if they could just come up with an operating system that did not crash over and over and over!
i've had vista since it came out. i'm still waiting to have my first problem with it.

Ha Ha Ha!! I knew this would happen. Microsoft in general are a bunch of crooks! This is why I use Linux. It never disappoints me. I tried Vista when it first came out. What a joke!! Now Windows 7 looks like it has blown it. Good luck all you gung ho Windows users!!
