While 99 percent of the tech world is sleeping off its collective hangover at CES in Las Vegas, a tiny but very important minority can be found in foggy San Francisco, where Steve Jobs has just announced the latest goodies to come from Apple Computer.
Speculation has run rampant over the last few months since Jobs' last affair, with predictions ranging from iPod phones to high-definition TVs with Apple branding. Here's what actually went down, starting with the big news that people will be chatting about for weeks to come.
Despite trademark concerns, it really is going to be called the iPhone, and here it is. An all-new interface makes this slim rectangle completely button-free. The whole thing is a touchscreen. 4GB or 8GB of storage inside for your music. Cingular EDGE (no 3G service!) for your phone calls. Wi-Fi. It actually runs Apple's OS X and can do all manner of "smart phone" tasks...which is either going to be very cool or extreme overkill for people who just wanted a phone that could also play music. How long will it be before we start getting emails with a "Sent from my Apple iPhone" tag at the bottom of them? (Yahoo! Mail is included on the device, by the way, along with all manner of internet capabilities.)
Other features include a 2-megapixel camera and a standard iPod jack. It's also crazy slim at under 12mm in thickness. Wanna watch a movie? Just flip it on its side and you have a nice widescreen display. No keyboard: A virtual one pops up when you need it. We'll see how well that works over time.
There are so many other features on this phone that I could easily do a gigantic five-part post on the thing. $499 or $599 depending on storage. Arriving in June.
AppleTV
Formerly known as iTV, Apple's miniature set-top media streaming device is finally coming out. (This was announced last year.) The new product includes component video, an HDMI connector, optical audio, 802.11n networking (which should help with the bandwidth issues I wrote about last time), and a 40GB hard drive. Looks nice! $299.

Disclosure: The iPhone is slated to use Yahoo! Mail and oneSearch, which are owned and operated by Yahoo! Inc., which also owns and operates Yahoo! Tech.

$500 for a phone?? My Nokia E62 does all of that and more and it was free.
cant wait to try it out
This guy is bang on with his point about being able to do a 5 point post. Go to their website, they thought of "almost" everything. It looks like Apple hit a home run. The only two questions are not having 3G and where's the patented iPod wheel???
I want one too. I'm a treo addict, and love that I do not have to run any Windows operating systems on my current Treo. If I want to change, at least I will have another non-Microsoft platform phone, and the iPhone might even be more compatible with my Macbook and G5.
Whats this world comming to?
The iPhone is too expensive for the amount of memory imo.
Apple is getting too big, people will start to boycott just like walmrt and McDs
i feel confused.....
My sister has the PC smartphone that does everything that one does and she hates it. First the touch screen is a bad idea because her cheek hits it all the time when she talks hanging up on people and other things. Also all of that extra stuff drains the battery faster than a normal phone as well as has terrible reception. On a good note, this has a much larger storage space which would be useful for moving presentations from site to site. Email on the phone while useful for SMS in a business environment isn't that practical. Most people have laptops now and most places have WI-FI connections. If you HAVE to have your email you can also set up services that send you SMS alerts to your phone so you can pop open your laptop reply via the phone card. Really, two things stand out on this phone, storage and the proverbial high school cool points. Seems like a waste of money for all but the few people in that niche that would actually need something like this.
DDDAM! BITE MY APPLE.I GOTTA HAVE 1.
I want one too :)
cant wait to get one* ive been wating for a good phone to come out*.
This seems pretty cool.
This phone looks awesometacious.. Finally can tell what i want for the newyear to my Friends..lol
go to the apple website and watch the flash demo of the iphone. looks amazing!
This is so totally cool. No surprise at all that it's from Apple, the most revolutionary company in the business. Gimme, gimme, gimme. Go Apple!!!
its too much. that touch screen would get ruined when it gets shoved into pockets and purses...unless its made of some indestructable material. which knowing apple...it just might be. but i wouldn't buy it.
TO all the killjoys out there... especially the 26 yo who isn't tech savy... I am 52 and a woman who can use a great phone like that. I know you Microsoft stepford wives can't get over the MAC thing... (I have made MANY converts over time...) get a mac and try it out... you'll see why we love them so.
I think its a great phone and i know that i will be on line to be the first to get one..but as a owner of the nokia 9300 communicator.I am wondering how much of all that technology will the average person like me use?....I have owned my communicator for about 1 year now and i still haven't even tried to use all the apps....lol...thanks apple Garth

It's overkill......I use my phone to make calls and take occasional pictures. I listen to music in my car or at home and the CD's are just fine. I watch movies on my television at home. I know that there is a market out there for such a device, but for most, I'm betting it is overkill.
