10 Commandments of Cell Phone Etiquette

Once in a while even the stodgy InfoWorld has an amusing piece, and the magazine's "10 commandments of cell phone etiquette" is just the thing for a Friday afternoon.

Headed out on the town this weekend? Read the rules, and heed them well!

Among my favorites (and among the less obvious commandments like turning your phone off at a movie theater):

  • "Thou shalt not set thy ringer to play La Cucaracha every time thy phone rings." Some of the default ringtones, especially the polyphonic ones, are actually even worse.
  • "Thou shalt not wear more than two wireless devices on thy belt." You know if you're guilty right now.
  • "Thou shalt not speak louder on thy cell phone than thou would on any other phone." Man, this is an aggravating one. Why do people hold the phone in front of them and yell into it instead of talking normally? To avoid the tumors?
  • "Thou shalt not slam thy cell phone down on a restaurant table just in case it rings." Ok, I'm guilty here. I just can't stand having a phone in my pocket for any longer than necessary. Try it with a brick like the Sprint PPC-6700 and you'll understand.

As you might expect, there are six more commandments, but I won't spoil the fun. Enjoy your weekend!

What I don't like about whole thing of the Blue tooth, is when women and guys have this thing on under there long hair and then they look at you like they are talking to you. Like the Beer commercial and the lady is talking on the cell thru the Bluetooth and she was so rude. I really dislike that.

Amen, think about the person on the other end listening to the guy in the stall next to you flush or worse. Leave the phone alone, and by all means don't forget to wash your hands!!!!!! You realize you put those hands on your phone and then your phone by your mouth, right?

These rules very useful, I'll tell a friend. Thanks.

Turn your phone to VIBRATE ENTIRELY! I was in a restaurant today and heard someone's obnoxious ring tone from 5 tables away. What is wrong with not using the ringer ever and wearing the phone on your person so only YOU knows when someone is trying to reach you? I never answer my cell phone in a restaurant - it shows a lack of respect for who you're sitting with and you might as well dine alone.

If you are in a place(meeting, meal, conversation, etc.)where a ringtone will be disrutive, switch to silent. You'll know it rang and can respond later.

For those cashiers who are complaining about cell phone use in the grocery line, now you know how consumers feel when you have a checker who never says a word of greeting, never looks at you, and spends all the time carrying on a "personal" conversation with another checker. Very rude.
