Stories are pouring in from outraged shoppers who thought they could get a great deal on equipment from Circuit City as part of its fire sale liquidation. The problem: Circuit City won't let you open sealed boxes to inspect merchandise before you take it home -- and all sales are final. No returns. No exchanges. That's not so great if the gear is hopelessly broken.
One Minnesota family spent $1,500 on a 50-inch plasma TV and found the glass shattered once they got it home. The store refused to take back the TV and instead referred the issue to Circuit City headquarters, where no one answered the phone. The family is checking with Panasonic, the manufacturer, to see if it's covered under warranty.
A similar problem happened to a Boston customer, who paid $1,100 for what turned out to be a totally busted Samsung TV. She got a refund from her credit card company, but only after a local TV station made inquiries on her behalf. Be warned: Consumerist says that getting credit card companies to help you out may be difficult in cases like this where a bankruptcy is involved. (As I understand the specifics of the Circuit City case, normally your credit card company will just "charge back" the merchant in question, but in this case the merchant is going out of business and has federal bankruptcy protection during the process.)
It's not just big ticket items that can be dead on arrival. Consider this $7.50 "bargain" video game purchased from a Circuit City store, which appears to have been chewed up by a robot.
No doubt there are still some good deals to be found in these liquidating stores, but remember that, now more than ever, "buyer beware" is the rule of the day.

I have been trying to get a bulb for my TV and for over a week I have been getting the run around .....no one can help. The only way to get service ...........who knows all the lines cut you off or repeat the menu no matter what button you select. You may as well give up or deliver them a bat.
Do your research before you buy from Circuit city. PRICES ARE INFLATED AT ALL OF THESE STORES! There are NO deals on any large ticket items. EVERY TELEVISION AVAILABLE AT CC IS CHEAPER ON THE INTERNET AND WILL BE UNTIL THEY REACH ABOUT 50-60% off MSRP. Annd you will still have to worry about it being broken! I feel bad for anyone who has purchased a large item from this store (as of yet). You got robbed.
duh you NEVER buy ANYTHING that you cant see!!!!
We have been victimized as well when we purchased an open box 52" Sony TV and they claimed they have checked it and its working. When we got home its not working. It's a very frustrating experience for us.
What a joke! How do people keep falling for these so called "liquidation sales". I feel no sympathy for those shoppers who do not do their research.
I've been to three Circuit Cities since the liquidation sales began. Each one had a table set aside, complete with power cables, for customers to open boxes and make sure the items worked and functioned.
Serves these idiots right. What kind of numbskull pays 1500.00 for something without looking at it?? I went in one and their policy was clearly stated. No refunds. Morons. I'm with Circuit City on this one, as hard as this to say.
Why do people expect sterling (or any) customer service from a store that's being administered by a company that's liquidating it? Caveat Emptor - look it up, sheep.
Circuit City's clearance prices are similar to competitors regular prices. So far, no deals were to be found, or made. One store I went to was trying to sell a floor model piece of furniture with visible damage at the same price closed-box items were selling for. Since they are in bankruptcy, they aren't even allowed to deal on the price. Good luck and caveat emptor!
Not true...at least at the Circuit City store I work at...we let them buy it, open it up to make sure everything's good, then it's all set. If something is wrong out of the box...we exchange it. Easy enough.... Get your facts straight... There are signs all over the store that say ALL SALES FINAL. Check the bottom of your receipt: ALL SALES FINAL. That means, no we will not return it.
You should be able to open the darn box to see if the screen is ----- tered...do it in the presence of a worker...no wonder this group is going out of business.
You get what you pay for, buy CD's, DVD, paper, ink etc, but you have to be crazy to buy high end "delicate" products from a store that is going out of sale, that includes laptops and computers!!
Just another example of how corporate greed and these rich people running this country treat the people that buy there products. It is not the land of the free or home of the brave, it is the land of the rich, greedy, and corrupt.
Circuit City was largely a ripoff place before they went into bankruptcy. They often would not honor advertised prices, instead using bait and switch tactics. They would twist your arm to make you buy their extended warranty, then when there was a problem with the product, there was ALWAYS some reason the warranty did not apply. While I am sorry to hear people are STILL being ripped off by them, I also say "good riddance" to Circuit City.
I purchased an Acer laptop at the CC around the corner from their headquarters in Richmond and was allowed to inspect the contents, while still in the store, after paying. The Liquidation manager allowed me to do this and said that if it was broken I could exchange for credit towards another. Do be careful though as they are winding down their liquidation and this practice was specific to my situation. Scot L. Roanoke, VA
Almost every item has a manufacture warranty, so all they have to do is return it to them not Circuit City. People are just so darn lazy, they dont wanna be bothered with it. Get off your lazy butts.
People should understand that NO REFUNDS means NO REFUNDS. No telling what kind of crap is being put out for sale there now.
My sister was at CC, and the policy was you buy the item, they would open and make sure it worked while you were in the store, and if it didn't, you could exchange it while you were there.
Oh my God, Circuit S-ity selling bogus electronics! What a surprise!!!!!

A word of caution to any one reading this: simply DO NOT buy there, yeah the deals on paper may look ggod but on the long run, you'll end up paying double for it, buying the one from them, and then buying a good one somewhere else.
