In an event that hits the computer world only once every few years, security experts are racing against time to mitigate the impact of a bit of malware which is set to wreak havoc on a hard-coded date. As is often the case, that date is April 1.
Malware creators love to target April Fool's Day with their wares, and the latest worm, called Conficker C, could be one of the most damaging attacks we've seen in years.
Conficker first bubbled up in late 2008 and began making headlines in January as known infections topped 9 million computers. Now in its third variant, Conficker C, the worm has grown incredibly complicated, powerful, and virulent... though no one is quite sure exactly what it will do when D-Day arrives.
Thanks in part to a quarter-million-dollar bounty on the head of the writer of the worm, offered by Microsoft, security researchers are aggressively digging into the worm's code as they attempt to engineer a cure or find the writer before the deadline. What's known so far is that on April 1, all infected computers will come under the control of a master machine located somewhere across the web, at which point anything's possible. Will the zombie machines become denial of service attack pawns, steal personal information, wipe hard drives, or simply manifest more traditional malware pop-ups and extortion-like come-ons designed to sell you phony security software? No one knows.
Conficker is clever in the way it hides its tracks because it uses an enormous number of URLs to communicate with HQ. The first version of Conficker used just 250 addresses each day -- which security researchers and ICANN simply bought and/or disabled -- but Conficker C will up the ante to 50,000 addresses a day when it goes active, a number which simply can't be tracked and disabled by hand.
At this point, you should be extra vigilant about protecting your PC: Patch Windows completely through Windows Update and update your anti-malware software as well. Make sure your antivirus software is actually running too, as Conficker may have disabled it.
Microsoft also offers a free online safety scan here, which should be able to detect all Conficker versions.

my recommendation... DONT GO ON THE INTERNET ON APRIL 1st!
omg
Beware on March 13th Friday I recieved a virus that pretend that its was my spyware and I clicked on it and destroyed my internet use..ITS called the 360 antivirus ware and it wants all your info...becareful out there even us joe schomes!!!!!!!!!!!!Have to be careful :)
Ha, to all you Mac and Linux users: Mac and Linux operating systems are NOT immune to attacks. Virus writers simply see no reason to write viral codes for these operating systems because only a small fraction of the world depends on them. Thus, they stick with Windows because that is where the market is and where they can do the most damage. Believe me, if the number of Mac and other operating system users increases, you WILL be targetted, and you are no safer than Windows. No doubt about that.
What if the PC isn't turned on April 1st...will it still get affected?
Is any trojan or spyware (what is the difference) program fine. When I down load an experimental version I am told I have 53 infections to 200. I am not sure what program to buy. Thank you for any help.
shadowman..WHy in the world would you even wish a virus on a computor just because its not the same one YOU prefer?? What a LOSER you are!
Mac owners operate with their heads up their butts.
Why would any virus writtter target mac and linux when most people used window, the point of doing it is to effect as many computer as possible, if I were a virus writter I would write all kind of things to rip your mac and linux computers apart.
Dear Conficker I am just a unemployed construction worker and need my computer for job searches and this is the only way to get to the employers. If you release your virus It will leave me and my family in tragic desperation in these trying economic times. So I ask you why?Do you have a family to feed?
Hi, I am a 9 year old and I am a PC, I just created a virus that crashed your Windows computer...... is what the ad should say. I love my Mac :o) , no system registry, all programs run independent. Windows is obsolete. That is all.
Sounds like shadowman_26 is issuing threats maybe he is the writer of the "Conficker C" and feverishly working towards cracking Linux/OSX. Plus windoze is like swiss cheese virus' have so many holes to get in through. Personally I have never had a virus on my Mac, humm can I collect the 250 g's if shadowman turns out to be the one. ;)
AVG is total crap. Get PAID FOR Anti-virus such as Avira. You do get what you pay for in life.
I tried to open a job posting from a Monster.com e-mail over the weekend and then I received a message that there was "over 364 corrupted files detected on your computer, your computer is in danger of being corrupted and files erased. Recommend run virus scan". Then it would not let me "X" click out of the box unless I clicked on "run" under a website called www.wal2009.com or www.2009mal.com (something like that). My McAfee popped up and said do not run unless trusted site. I immediately shut my computer down and then had McAfee check for viruses. Nothing came up in over 150,000 files that were scanned.
Widow 7 is coming so all you mac loser beware, And why are you so much trying to get people to come on your side is it because we window users know you sucks.
darren2e if everyone switched to Linux or Mac then all of the viruses would be written for Linux and Mac. Thats not a real solution, it just helps those who dont use the software most people in the world do
Shadowman, whether you're statement is true or not, it's completely rude and disgusting to actually want other computer users to get viruses. I've had my fair share of viruses on my family's PC and I can tell you one thing: it's super obnoxious. Don't wish on someone else what you would not wish on yourself. You don't like viruses, and neither do we (Mac and Linux users). So rather then wishing the worst on us, you should support the betterment of PC, Mac, /and/ Linux security. There's nothing better than not having to worry about one's computer security. Sure, it might never actually happen (that is, a virus, or near virus-free world), but we can do what we can to protect the computers and their users.
Anna Meyer have you ever heard a pop up blocker.
I just love it. Rip the Mac/Linux users and it turns into a personal war against me. Sorry to say Mac/Linux users, you ARE NOT SAFE, YOU ARE NOT IMMUNE!!! Viral coders simply won't target Mac/Linux because they in the MINORITY of users. As stated before, they want to inflict as much harm as possible, and that is done by targeting Windows. I have been a guru of computers over the last 15 years. And who said that I am using Windows? Poster #3 Darren.......pretty pathetic to insult with words, don't ya think? Poster #32, thank you for backing me up.

you can't get the "free safety scan" unless you agree to sign up for their service. So is that a free scan or scam.
