Beware Conficker worm come April 1

In an event that hits the computer world only once every few years, security experts are racing against time to mitigate the impact of a bit of malware which is set to wreak havoc on a hard-coded date. As is often the case, that date is April 1.

Malware creators love to target April Fool's Day with their wares, and the latest worm, called Conficker C, could be one of the most damaging attacks we've seen in years.

Conficker first bubbled up in late 2008 and began making headlines in January as known infections topped 9 million computers. Now in its third variant, Conficker C, the worm has grown incredibly complicated, powerful, and virulent... though no one is quite sure exactly what it will do when D-Day arrives.

Thanks in part to a quarter-million-dollar bounty on the head of the writer of the worm, offered by Microsoft, security researchers are aggressively digging into the worm's code as they attempt to engineer a cure or find the writer before the deadline. What's known so far is that on April 1, all infected computers will come under the control of a master machine located somewhere across the web, at which point anything's possible. Will the zombie machines become denial of service attack pawns, steal personal information, wipe hard drives, or simply manifest more traditional malware pop-ups and extortion-like come-ons designed to sell you phony security software? No one knows.

Conficker is clever in the way it hides its tracks because it uses an enormous number of URLs to communicate with HQ. The first version of Conficker used just 250 addresses each day -- which security researchers and ICANN simply bought and/or disabled -- but Conficker C will up the ante to 50,000 addresses a day when it goes active, a number which simply can't be tracked and disabled by hand.

At this point, you should be extra vigilant about protecting your PC: Patch Windows completely through Windows Update and update your anti-malware software as well. Make sure your antivirus software is actually running too, as Conficker may have disabled it.

Microsoft also offers a free online safety scan here, which should be able to detect all Conficker versions.

I didn't wish virus/spyware/malware on anyone, just told the honest truth that it's coming. Plain and simple as that. But I guess you Mac/Linux users think only in 1 direction, about yourselves!

I'm sorry I just can't get down with things I can't upgrade. My PC needs an upgrade I buy a part, a MAC needs an upgrade well you buy another MAC. I can do anything a mac can do and sometimes better. To each his own but I will never be a MAC. Also just so you aren't being a naive blind sighted product loyal consumer, MAC GET VIRUSES TOO. I just went and pick up my boss's MAC from the store and she would have saved on a replacement. Have a nice day.

Poster 45, Does the truth hurt that much? Really, anything dissing Windows and all you Mac/Linux users are all over this board posting, Get a Mac, Get Linux, Windows Sucks!!! FFS, if Linux was easy to use (Ubuntu is to a point) then why aren't more people using it? The sad part is that your average user won't switch because they do not want to relearn an OS. Linux would be more competitive if instead of having 250 distros, take the best out of them all, Create 3-5 distros. You can have your KDE, Gnome for each flavor. The thing that hurts Linux is the amount of distros available. The honest TRUTH!!! Like it or hate it, what's your choice?

The “Conficker” worm is already out there infecting computer and server. I’ve witnessed it devastation on computer systems, and servers… It will attack, and lock your account, logins, change your passwords, it is perceived to have a much more malicious intent. “Microsoft Forefront” can protect you system from this intruder. The key, don’t be a cheapskate, if you have something worth protecting, than protect it.

why do you sick hackers continue to want to destroy things. If you are that bored that all you do is sit around and devise worms to destroy peoples computers. Why not put that energy towards something more positive like helping our presedent and powers that be come up with a plan to pull us out of this recession. STUPID GEEKS!!!!!!!!

I guess anyone is free to toss vomit on the net when you can't be face to face with your words. Shame on all of you. Each system has their own ups and downs. Get over it kids and play nice in the sand box. And yes, I use both OS Windows and MAC, have been doing so for over 20 years.

I read in a security breifing that it's fairly certain that it was created by the FSB for the Kremlin.

Yeh the days of Micro bashing for being well "soft" against viri is over. Look at how buggy and virus prone the supposedly unfallible Apple's Safari browser has been.
