Beware Conficker worm come April 1

In an event that hits the computer world only once every few years, security experts are racing against time to mitigate the impact of a bit of malware which is set to wreak havoc on a hard-coded date. As is often the case, that date is April 1.

Malware creators love to target April Fool's Day with their wares, and the latest worm, called Conficker C, could be one of the most damaging attacks we've seen in years.

Conficker first bubbled up in late 2008 and began making headlines in January as known infections topped 9 million computers. Now in its third variant, Conficker C, the worm has grown incredibly complicated, powerful, and virulent... though no one is quite sure exactly what it will do when D-Day arrives.

Thanks in part to a quarter-million-dollar bounty on the head of the writer of the worm, offered by Microsoft, security researchers are aggressively digging into the worm's code as they attempt to engineer a cure or find the writer before the deadline. What's known so far is that on April 1, all infected computers will come under the control of a master machine located somewhere across the web, at which point anything's possible. Will the zombie machines become denial of service attack pawns, steal personal information, wipe hard drives, or simply manifest more traditional malware pop-ups and extortion-like come-ons designed to sell you phony security software? No one knows.

Conficker is clever in the way it hides its tracks because it uses an enormous number of URLs to communicate with HQ. The first version of Conficker used just 250 addresses each day -- which security researchers and ICANN simply bought and/or disabled -- but Conficker C will up the ante to 50,000 addresses a day when it goes active, a number which simply can't be tracked and disabled by hand.

At this point, you should be extra vigilant about protecting your PC: Patch Windows completely through Windows Update and update your anti-malware software as well. Make sure your antivirus software is actually running too, as Conficker may have disabled it.

Microsoft also offers a free online safety scan here, which should be able to detect all Conficker versions.

Window 7 is going to blow Mac users away when Window XP users come to their senses and upgrade to Window 7.

Why can't people just leave personal computer users alone!!?? We didn't do anything to these hackers and inventors of the worms, viruses, etc. Why target us? I can't afford to have my computer attacked-hence I guess I will have to find yet a better, more competent anti-malware programs than windows defender.

If they already know that this is going to happen and when, why don't they do something about it now? How could they possibly know about it, yet not know where it will be coming from?

Okay, am I the only one here that believes, with 90% certainty, that this in itself is a nice little early April Fool's joke?

shadowman_26, anyone can write a virus for a pc and nobody has been able to do so for a Mac. As these creeps only do this for the glory, I think being the first author of a Mac virus is a high priority. It's just that they can't do it. alexgannis, for 25 years now Microsoft has never had an operating system that has been nearly as good as the Mac OS. If Windows 7 comes anywhere close to the experience of using Mac OS 10.5 I'll be shocked. The only thing I have heard about Windows 7 it that is isn't VIsta and therefore it's great. Not exactly a ringing endorsement

It also figures that the scanner is not compatible with Vista either.... at least with SP2 running...

They shouln't allow sales reps to post. My concern is that Microsoft with all their billions only put up a quarter million for the bounty. Is there any integrity anywhere. Even all the protection and scans running now slow computer and cause conflicks that are in some cases just as frustrating as the intrudors.

All you pc----- s need to realize that Windows 7 is just a copy of Mac OS X, minus the best features and with a worse GUI.

Shadowman is not living in our world. Promoting chaos seems to be his thing which is so sad. He apparently doesn't want to use his real name. Wonder why? Clyde L Harris

What about Norton360? Is that enough to stop this virus from infecting my computer?

What this tells me is, even virus' do not like Macs or Linux. If you have a Lexus or Mercedes, why drive a Yugo?
