Apple iPhone: Coolest Features, Biggest Obstacles

Now that the tech world has had a few days to digest Apple's industry-churning iPhone, it's a good time to step back a bit and dissect the thing. There's no question that, when the iPhone is released this summer, it will be the most advanced and capable phone on the planet...but is that a good thing? Here's a little more on what will probably be 2007's most talked-about gadget.

The OS - The iPhone runs a version of OS X, Apple's standard desktop computer operating system. At first that sounds like cool beyond words...but does it really take a PC OS to make some phone calls? How long will it take the phone to boot up? And how will having such an advanced OS on the phone impact its battery life? These answers are still unclear and won't be hammered out until reviewers have more face time with the device, but my hunch is that the phone's high-power abilities will ultimately outweigh any complexity it has.

Gesture-Based Computing - Remember it's not just a question of the OS, it's how you use it. The iPhone has no buttons, no keyboard, no real external controls: Everything is performed by making taps and zipping your finger along the touchscreen. Called multi-touch, this process will be a revolution in how you interact with the device, which opens up many possibilities...but closes some, too. The big problem? You won't be able to do much with the phone with only one hand, which could be a real pain when you just want to make a quick call.

Wireless - 802.11g Wi-Fi is a good thing, but the lack of 3G service is a terrible oversight. The EDGE data network is simply too slow for regular email usage, not to mention the iPhone's next-generation Internet services like real-time mapping. My spidey sense tells me that iPhone 2 will have 3G front and center in its feature set. It's also worth noting that the iPhone is a GSM phone and only available on the Cingular network. Sprint and Verizon users hoping for a CDMA version shouldn't hold their breath. I highly doubt this will ever happen.

Music - Are people really ready to replace two devices (phone and MP3 player) with one? Signs definitely point to yes on that front, but anyone with an iPod with more than 8GB of storage in it today has got to be disappointed that Apple decided not to create an iPhone with a hard drive in it. On the other hand, the decision to run with flash instead of a hard drive makes perfect sense: Phones get tossed around a lot more than MP3 players, and a hard drive may very well be too fragile for such active use. It would also make the iPhone much heavier. While I doubt 100GB hard drive-based iPhones will appear in the near future, the door's open for 16GB and 32GB models, as flash memory in that density already exists (though at extreme prices). I'd expect these upgrades by the end of the year or mid-2008.

The Cash - Gulp. Then there's the not-so-small issue of price. At $599 for the 8GB phone, the iPhone is out of reach for the vast majority of users who pay $150 or less for their handset.  Don't expect prices to fall soon after release, either. That simply isn't Apple's ballgame, and the iPhone will always be a premium product. (Don't expect discounts from Cingular, either. I anticipate that, much like the Nintendo Wii, it will be difficult to find an iPhone on release even at full price.) On the other hand, I've seen $600 (or more) cell phones in the past, and they were hardly anything to write home about.

Bottom line: The iPhone may have flaws, but it is still undeniably cool and will change the cell phone market the same way the iPod changed digital music. There's a reason it was the most talked-about gadget at CES, a show where it wasn't even introduced. I already want one. What about you?

Disclosure: The iPhone is slated to use Yahoo! Mail and oneSearch, which are owned and operated by Yahoo! Inc., which also owns and operates Yahoo! Tech.

Another piece of technology that no one really needs but once people start buying everyone will have to have one. "Look at Steve, he has an iPhone, isn't he cool?"

first i got to say that i think this phone is awesome and if i had the cash i'd get it too. yeah it has its flaws but tell me something that doesn't. alotta people say that its too expensive and that it won't sell, that "it won't appeal to older people and the younger people that want it cant afford it." bull crap, i agree that its expensive but that has never stopped the american society from buying 60Gb nanos or high priced cars and trucks, tvs that take up a whole wall etc.. Why should this phone be any different? ANd alot of kids do have rich mommys and daddys why do you think the PS3 and 360 sell? and wont appeal to older people? cmon man, ive seen some hip old people. Give credit to Apple they know what theyre doing.

It looks very cool and yes i think it will change the cell phone market in alot of ways. But get real NO 3G! It's true that most of the money Iphone could make would be from Corporate Companies Because they Can pay for Data packages.. The Treo or blackberry rule the market right now an yes they have touch screens,Itunes,SD/SDHC chips to store anything,3G Broadband, sync with all apps, one handed features plus all the apps you can use or want to download like Remote desktop your pc from your phone or TxT your friends or anyone with IR sniper or tun your cell into a walkie talkie just look at all the apps for a smart phone..Until iphone can snyc with corporate email with some kind of broadband service it will hurt then bigtime..Itunes already runs on smart phones. I guess the only reason to get one would be to show you spent more money to look cool and to have the latest gaget

Ok, so before the release date was announced, I went into a Cingular store and asked if I were to buy the iphone, would I have to renew my contract. They said no, then, on yahoo I read that you have to sign a 2 year contract to buy it. Does anyone really know?

I hate Cingular head to toe. I've had nothing but problems with the services, the support, the phones, so I'm glad they are with the iPhone because it makes it so much easier to say no to overpriced, generally unncessary junk. To the techies that buy it, enjoy your bragging rights but I'll keep my more simple and still functioning phone. (Am I the only person on the planet who only uses a phone for talking and for that matter, rarely does that?!)

it looks good, it probably has a good picture quality, but no way is it the best phone. HTC are making a phone with windows vista (HTC Shift) and HTC advantage has a megnetic detachale keyboard with better camera, video call and windows phone OS, Nokia N95 is quit good, samsung f700 is niceand better specs. iphone is over rated

This is definitely gonna be the "it" phone this summer with a nice, bank-breaking for some, price to go along with it. I personally feel it's a marketing thing for both iPod and Cingular (or is it AT&T again?). With all the hype going on with this particular phone, I can't help but wonder how quickly it'll be recalled. I think the creators announced it's release way too early. They definitely gave people enough time to save for it if need be but everyone's so anxious to get it, I'm sure they've rushed to put it out on the market. Just like the pink RAZR through Cingular. Every other provider had one but Cingular didn't so they rushed to release one and most of them were recalled within the first 2 weeks of being on the market due to failure to keep a call connected. We'll see.

If CDMA customers want to hold thier breath til their service provieders get the iphone, they will have to hold it for five years. That's how long AT&T has exclusivity.

iPhone?thats stupid. i mean wuts wrong with a mp3 and a phone? its like a 3 for the price of 1 bargain thingy. im not sayin it costs too much or anything but isnt it like really slow? its not worth it. im still waiting on a waay smaller iPod video cuz i cant put mine in my pocket for all my jeans. so i dont think its a good idea im a little impaitent so i might get pist waiting on that phone. i just want a helio ocean right now. i heard its better than sidekick. but i think apple has good ideas, just not this one.

"it will be the most advanced and capable phone on the planet..." hahahah that's such a joke. The guy who wrote the article must've never been outside of the U.S. or just another apple nuthugger. There's people in Japan that have phones with printers in them. Don't get me wrong, the iphone looks nice and will most likely be a big hit. But it is not even close to being the most advanced phone on the planet. For starters, it lacks 3G. The iphone is a overhyped phone with old features that apple somehow touts as "groundbreaking" technology.

$600? Where exactly is this market for "luxury electronics" in a time where the economy is in the toilet?

  • 323 Posted by mirceacormos on Thu Sep 3, 2009 7:21PM EDT Report Abuse

This Iphone will work on pretty much any GSM network, including Europe. Cingular or ATT have been good with me, good service, good prices and very good signal (I had some signal while visiting Yosemite Park!! ). I will buy an Iphone ! I wonder if somebody will be able to unlock the phone like they do with pretty much any other phone in Europe and then sell it unlocked... Hmmm My only hope is that some, like Amazon.com will offer some discounts on the IPhone... I got my Razr form Amazon with $50 instead of $200 from Cingular stores, 2 years ago !
