Apple iPhone: Coolest Features, Biggest Obstacles

Now that the tech world has had a few days to digest Apple's industry-churning iPhone, it's a good time to step back a bit and dissect the thing. There's no question that, when the iPhone is released this summer, it will be the most advanced and capable phone on the planet...but is that a good thing? Here's a little more on what will probably be 2007's most talked-about gadget.

The OS - The iPhone runs a version of OS X, Apple's standard desktop computer operating system. At first that sounds like cool beyond words...but does it really take a PC OS to make some phone calls? How long will it take the phone to boot up? And how will having such an advanced OS on the phone impact its battery life? These answers are still unclear and won't be hammered out until reviewers have more face time with the device, but my hunch is that the phone's high-power abilities will ultimately outweigh any complexity it has.

Gesture-Based Computing - Remember it's not just a question of the OS, it's how you use it. The iPhone has no buttons, no keyboard, no real external controls: Everything is performed by making taps and zipping your finger along the touchscreen. Called multi-touch, this process will be a revolution in how you interact with the device, which opens up many possibilities...but closes some, too. The big problem? You won't be able to do much with the phone with only one hand, which could be a real pain when you just want to make a quick call.

Wireless - 802.11g Wi-Fi is a good thing, but the lack of 3G service is a terrible oversight. The EDGE data network is simply too slow for regular email usage, not to mention the iPhone's next-generation Internet services like real-time mapping. My spidey sense tells me that iPhone 2 will have 3G front and center in its feature set. It's also worth noting that the iPhone is a GSM phone and only available on the Cingular network. Sprint and Verizon users hoping for a CDMA version shouldn't hold their breath. I highly doubt this will ever happen.

Music - Are people really ready to replace two devices (phone and MP3 player) with one? Signs definitely point to yes on that front, but anyone with an iPod with more than 8GB of storage in it today has got to be disappointed that Apple decided not to create an iPhone with a hard drive in it. On the other hand, the decision to run with flash instead of a hard drive makes perfect sense: Phones get tossed around a lot more than MP3 players, and a hard drive may very well be too fragile for such active use. It would also make the iPhone much heavier. While I doubt 100GB hard drive-based iPhones will appear in the near future, the door's open for 16GB and 32GB models, as flash memory in that density already exists (though at extreme prices). I'd expect these upgrades by the end of the year or mid-2008.

The Cash - Gulp. Then there's the not-so-small issue of price. At $599 for the 8GB phone, the iPhone is out of reach for the vast majority of users who pay $150 or less for their handset.  Don't expect prices to fall soon after release, either. That simply isn't Apple's ballgame, and the iPhone will always be a premium product. (Don't expect discounts from Cingular, either. I anticipate that, much like the Nintendo Wii, it will be difficult to find an iPhone on release even at full price.) On the other hand, I've seen $600 (or more) cell phones in the past, and they were hardly anything to write home about.

Bottom line: The iPhone may have flaws, but it is still undeniably cool and will change the cell phone market the same way the iPod changed digital music. There's a reason it was the most talked-about gadget at CES, a show where it wasn't even introduced. I already want one. What about you?

Disclosure: The iPhone is slated to use Yahoo! Mail and oneSearch, which are owned and operated by Yahoo! Inc., which also owns and operates Yahoo! Tech.

Bull! It's junk. Ipods & now Iphones require that content be downloaded from Itunes exclusively ... and then your up the creek if you need to upload your files to another computer. I'll wait for another manufacturer to make a much better version of this same phone -- and where I know I can backup or save the content.

I can remember a fool who said, "the beatles music was outdated and fading fast. They will never be a hit and I wont sign a record deal with them." Stupid is as stupid does. And I bet he felt like a real bad when they were top of the charts year after year. I also remember one of our presidents of the US saying "planes are a great toy but would hold no assett to our country as a weapon of war." Again Duhh!! Oh and now about the iphone. I have not bought an ipod or a personal video system yet just because I knew this phone was coming out. So to answer your question as to whether people will be willing to make the switch. The answer is yes. Why carry 3 bulky items around when now I have it all in one. Again stupid is as stupid does and if you think that wont be a hit. Well maybe you and the label that did not sign the beatles should get together and go bowling.

I, until Tuesday, was a MacAddict. I own a Mac, iPod.. everything. But after Steve Job's keynote.... bye Mac. 1. iPhone: ONLY available on the WORST cell phone provider? Apple lost a lot of possible customers just for using Cingular. Verizon would have been the SMART choice. 2. No updates on Hardware or Software: Vista will be out in weeks. Where's Leopard? Steve Jobs must be lost in that "Time Machine". 3. Switch to Intel: Now PPC's get no love.

Bottom line, if you dont need it dont buy it, if you think its over priced... dont buy it, if you can't afford it... right. Its not about needs or not needs does a person who drives a ferrari really need one or would they have gotten the same deal with a Echo? its about having and enjoying what you have, it appears to be a great ipod/phone/internet device, true with some flaws like where in the world do i have the keys for one hand use, or its gonna get scratched if i look at it wrong but then again which would be the perfect phone. And yes kids are gonna die over this phone just like they all begged mom and dad to go and get them the ipod for xmass. Truth is nobody really needs this phone, the question is who wants it... I know I do.

If it works as well as the IPOD video that we bought for our daughter, all I can say is, I feel sorry for the poor suckers who are actually stupid enough to pay so much money for a crap product and let's not forget the crap for service that comes along with the purchase of an Apple product. Good luck people. And don't forget this phone is straight out of the gate, in six months the bugs will be worked out and there will be a sleeker version:o)

How do you "lock the keys" on a keyless non-flip phone? We can only imagine what random key strokes (in this case - random touches) will produce?? Cool Factor - yes. G3 is only available in very major cities, so minus the "on-line/live video" and what you're left with is nothing really new, only a very cool and new package. My almost 3 year old Nokia 6230 still does the following: plays MPs, FM Radio, voice records, records and plays video clips, takes pictures, has full PIM functionality, texts, IMs, emails, has infrared and bluetooth capability and can browse the internet (just not well), and by the way - I get a phone signal where my friends don't. Battery still lasts up to 5 days, and the thing is very small and light. So Apple is back to the same old "Selling you flash, for bigger $$$$". I'll wait for the Intel version at half the price.

U.S people assume that Apple's product is the most popular hit item everywhere, but it is really only in U.S. May be it is popular at some other countries with same technology level, but not in Some of the Asia countriees which is higher than IPOD's technology. I have IPOD nano and I satisfy with it but that's because I'm in U.S. For example, in Korea the MP3 is already with Cell phone from long time agao. Additionaly, people watch Every TV channel through their cell phone on the street or in the subway, too. Cellphones camera function is as high quality as digital camera with its resolation and function. Apple need to go much more far away to beat these international marke standard..!!

no thanks, costs too much, the big touchscreen is bound to get all scratched up unless you encase it in another more bulky jacket. at least with a windows or palm os there are already thousands of handheld programs out there for you to try and justify the price you paid for the phone. I am sure however there are a ton of non-techno oriented trend junkies who alreay have created a market big enough to establish i-pod stores that will be frothing at the bit to get one. the real question is, are they smart enough to use it. I often wonder how many ipods go home and sit unused because the owner can't figure it out or does not have broadband access. I know of a couple and just chuckle, it's the new generation.

I don't think it's going to go anywhere until they make it available to at least one of the other big name cell phone carriers. Even if I wanted one, I wouldn't switch from my carrier to Cingular just for a phone, my iPod's small enough that I can fit it in my purse without a problem. Until they make it more affordable and accessable I'll stick with my LG :P

This will sell because it's APPLE and using the current "FAD"/Trend.Everybody is following the trend. It become fashion accessories. Wait till some celebrity like "UGLY" PAris hilton start using them.. the sales going to skyrocket. IF some other company come with this product considering everything else is equal, they wont even sell as much compared to APPLE brand.

If you have to ask how to use a phone, than your too stuped to own one! That broojo character doen't know what it's talking about.

A bigger drawback (then that Cingular is hosting this phone,) is that there is no keyboard. My guess is that one won't be able to reply to emails as quickly with this touchscreen Iphone, and that is much of the fun.
