Leaving computers on overnight = $2.8 billion a year

Admittedly I don't think much about it at all. I leave my laptop running overnight because I know it'll take five minutes or more to get things going in the morning -- not just booting up, but launching the various apps I start the day with, downloading my overnight email, filtering out the spam, and otherwise "getting settled."

But all the power wasted while computers are sitting idle overnight adds up, and one study has finally tried to measure it. The tally: An estimated $2.8 billion wasted on excess energy costs each year in the U.S. alone.

On a CO2 basis, that's 20 million tons of carbon dioxide, about the amount produced by 4 million cars on the road.

The full report is available for download here (scroll down to "PC Energy Report US 2009").

But big numbers like that become almost meaningless in an era of trillion-dollar bailouts, so to put the wasted energy in perspective, the study provides the data in terms you can better understand: If you run a company with 1,000 PCs left on overnight, you can save about $28,000 a year if they are turned off after hours. That's not chump change.

Of course, it's also a fact that your PC will function better if you restart it regularly, and nightly shutdowns can help you avoid having to suddenly reboot in the middle of the day when you'd otherwise be productive. So even though this little laptop, by my math, eats up only about a quarter's worth of power overnight, maybe it's a smart idea -- and ultimately a time-saver, too -- to shut it down after hours after all.

You should never shut your computer down, unless its an emergency. They make these computers so flimsy they break too easily. Unless you replace your computer once a year, or faster, I would leave it on 24/7/365 if you can.

I turn my laptop off as soon as I finish using it and it stays off until the next day. Laptops can overheat if left on all the time. Thanks for letting me know about the energy saving Chris.

"If you run a company with 1,000 PCs left on overnight, you can save about $28,000 a year if they are turned off after hours. That's not chump change." Lol, if you have a company that has that many computers, 28k a year is chump change.

I normally leave my Macbook in sleep mode when I'm not plugged in, but I have noticed if I do that with applications open, especially memory-chugging ones, my Mac reeeeally doesn't want to "wake up" come morning. A restart fixes that. But because of this, I'll try to turn it off at night...it's pretty fast turning on; not as fast as the Windows 7 commenter, but I'm very happy with the speed.

I never leave my computer running overnight. That 1 minute I spend each workday morning waiting for my computer to boot is when I go get coffee!

OMG , pretty soon were going to be regulating how much time we can be on the internet , just to save a few bucks and a tree . Give me a break , there is nothing we can do to destroy this planet . And how come we only have freedom for only the things people think we should have freedom for . If it is my choice to leave my pc on all night , thats my choice . I am so sick of this " green " attitude this country has . So many other things to worry about that are far more important .

I put mine to sleep when I'm not using it. I don't think it uses too much power that way. It makes it a lot easier to pick up where I left off.

the reason we live it on besides the hassle of waiting for windows to boot up is that they used to say that the turning the computer on and off would but a strain on the hard drives. I work in the audio video industry and we we say is its better to leave the front projector on between movies (anywhere less than 3-4 hours) because the constant turning on and off the bulb does lead to death of the bulb. This has been tested out because companies like Disney that run projectors all day will get a much higher life on their bulbs than the normal guy with his home theater who watches a movie for 2 hours and turn it off. The constant striking of the bulb eats into its life

Thanks for info!! I started shutting mine down, because with the fan constancely running to keep the components cool, it was also bring in small amounts of dust, in the end the dust build caused my computer to shut down. I thought I had a virus, took to to an honest computer repair shop and all he did was clean it out and it has been humming ever since. A less than honest person could have ripped me off for quite a few dollars,he charged me only $10, I hope this little bit of info help someone. It boot up fast and pages come up faster as well now that I shut it down when it's not in use. Windows XP

I leave my computer on all night, because I'm afraid of the dark at night time. Also, I fall asleep to the tv tuner that I have in my computer. Plus, I don't have to pay for the electricity use, it's included in the rent!

I frequently forget to shut down or turn off my computer. Not anymore. I am now alays looking for ways to cut my energy bill because I am now on a fixed income. I also hand wash my dishes....( I rinse them and put in dishwasher).....then when the dishwasher is full...I fill up my kitchen sink with hot, soapy water...and wash the dishes by hand. No more running the dishwasher for half an hour and then using the "DRY" cycle. And I hardly use any lights. If I amnot in the room...the lights are out !

I have always been told that it is cheaper and easier on your computers if you leave them on all the time. Can someone please help clarify that? Do we need to leave it on sleep mode or hibernate for that to be true? HELP!
