April Fool's arrives: Conficker still quiet... for now

April 1st has arrived for the whole world now, which means the dreaded Conficker.C -- perhaps the most technologically sophisticated malware attack ever designed -- is no longer dormant and is now actively looking for instructions on the internet.

That's the bad news. The good news: Those instructions either haven't been delivered by the worm's creators or (far less likely) Conficker has been thwarted by the attempts to raise awareness about the attack and stop it in its tracks, scaring off the creators.

As discussed widely in the media (and in a server-melting blog post here), Conficker was scheduled to go live on April 1 (local time), which meant it would no longer sit dormant on your computer but would rather begin polling the web for its instructions.

And as I mentioned as a possibility yesterday, those instructions have not yet been delivered despite the arrival of D-Day, so while Conficker is indeed "phoning home," no one is answering the call.

Yet.

Vigilance is key for now, as those instructions could be delivered at any time. Given the panic many people are experiencing over the arrival of April 1 (thank you for all the emails...), if I were a malware writer, I'd wait until tomorrow -- or later -- before launching the real attack, after guards had been let down a bit and people thought the coast was clear. That's not the case.

I'll reiterate that, despite the fact that it hasn't yet gone haywire, I don't believe Conficker is a hoax. This is an extremely sophisticated piece of programming that is indeed looking for instructions from its creator on what to do next and is simply idling in the meantime. Just because those instructions haven't been given does not mean you're safe from attack.

Don't panic, but keep your antivirus running and update, and make sure Windows is patched. My prior post has additional information on keeping yourself protected, whether Conficker finally goes live later today or a year from now.

I have been in the industry for over 20 years. I own a Mac and Window based and Linux mechines. Mac users 1)Mac is NOT a superior product. It is that fact that it is not worth the time and effort to hack them. The whole point to these attacks is to do as much damage without alot of effort. It honestly isn't worth recoding the variant to get the limited number of Mac's out there compaired to the Billions of Window based Systems. When that day comes (and it is comming) that it is worth it for a hacker to create an attack specifically designed for the Mac you will see how unprepaired WE ( Mac users ) really are. There are LARGE security holes in all versions of the Mac OS. When the Mac is as popular as a PC that is when we will see the problems with the Mac OS. Bottom line IT'S JUST NOT WORTH IT ... YET

Microsoft has know about this how long? This is a wakeup call to anyone who is not keeping their anti-virus software up to date.

Go here to download Microsoft's patch to protect against Conficker (choose your version of Windows and hit download): http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS08-067.mspx Go here to download the Conficker removal tool by BitDefender: http://bdtools.net If you can't get to either site then you can schedule an appointment with AT&T ConnecTech here and somebody can remove the infection for you: https://monthlytechsupport.att.com

Can you believe it Microsoft has offered $250000 to get a trace of that person who has created this virus. I don't even care about any virus or computer problem, I have the best tech support of IT24BY7 (www.IT24BY7.com) with me. These guys are simply amazing. I just contact them and tell them about my computer problem, they remote in and fix the problem within minutes. I recommend their computer service to everyone.

I toasted conflicker in January... got it while updating to XP SP3... figured it was Microsoft being up set because I don't usually update.. Malwarebytes did the best work but used three other virus scanner/killers to get it out before that bu they only disabled it. I'm going with it being an April fools joke from MS after reading the blogs and so on who else could have know about the open soar that had been there for so long? Intel? The Government/CIA? Santa? The Auto Workers Union? Vladamir Putin? everyone's a suspect (and if I keep naming people indiscriminately I'll have a knock on the door from NSA in the morning... ha ha April fools... but I did really use Malwarebytes to toast Conflicker.....

Personally I think that the anti-virus companies put this stuff out to sell their software.
