April Fool's arrives: Conficker still quiet... for now

April 1st has arrived for the whole world now, which means the dreaded Conficker.C -- perhaps the most technologically sophisticated malware attack ever designed -- is no longer dormant and is now actively looking for instructions on the internet.

That's the bad news. The good news: Those instructions either haven't been delivered by the worm's creators or (far less likely) Conficker has been thwarted by the attempts to raise awareness about the attack and stop it in its tracks, scaring off the creators.

As discussed widely in the media (and in a server-melting blog post here), Conficker was scheduled to go live on April 1 (local time), which meant it would no longer sit dormant on your computer but would rather begin polling the web for its instructions.

And as I mentioned as a possibility yesterday, those instructions have not yet been delivered despite the arrival of D-Day, so while Conficker is indeed "phoning home," no one is answering the call.

Yet.

Vigilance is key for now, as those instructions could be delivered at any time. Given the panic many people are experiencing over the arrival of April 1 (thank you for all the emails...), if I were a malware writer, I'd wait until tomorrow -- or later -- before launching the real attack, after guards had been let down a bit and people thought the coast was clear. That's not the case.

I'll reiterate that, despite the fact that it hasn't yet gone haywire, I don't believe Conficker is a hoax. This is an extremely sophisticated piece of programming that is indeed looking for instructions from its creator on what to do next and is simply idling in the meantime. Just because those instructions haven't been given does not mean you're safe from attack.

Don't panic, but keep your antivirus running and update, and make sure Windows is patched. My prior post has additional information on keeping yourself protected, whether Conficker finally goes live later today or a year from now.

It's a real shame that someone talented enough to create such a complex programming masterpiece ends up using it for some idiotic purpose with absolutely no merit or benefit to anyone whatsoever. *** a note to the creator of the worm; GET A GIRLFRIEND DUDE!

Not bragging. Just stating a fact. Don't be ashamed of the fact that you were smart enough to but a superior product.

How do people find out about these virus/ worms anyway? I know very little about computers, but it looks like there has to be some sort of message of warning.

why is there so much press this time about the conflicker virus? this isn't the first time it has been launched.

"...with absolutely no merit or benefit to anyone whatsoever." If it steals your identity it benenfits someone.

Neither Linux nor Mac computers are going to be bothered by this or similar viruses. Face it, Windows is an inferior product. It is like sticking with a brand of tires that always has blow outs. Sooner or later you're going to realize it's time to change brands not your driving habits.

If you believe your operating system is superior, show people why it is, don't brag and call them idiots, I'm sick of the stereotype that all Mac users are rich and stuckup.

Microsoft has been down since I tried at 7am today April 1 until nowe at 1:45pm CST on both Moxilla and Netcaptor browsers. It does make you wonder.

Since Conficker disrupts access to Windows services, like Windows Update, your probably infected with it.

I took this seriously and followed the author's advice. Updated my Windows XP, and Norton 360, ran scans and let the Antivirus software fix any risks. Now it is perhaps too late for those who did not..... But many thanks to author of this article.

d_ziccardi, Mac is not a "superior product" as you put it. It's not that virus attacks can't be created for the Mac OS, it is that it isn't worth the attackers time to create one for it when compared to the PC. Way more people and especially businesses use PC and that is why the attacks are typically geared toward the Windows OS. Mac's can be just as susceptible.

Um...I didn't call anyone an idiot. You can buy an inferior computer and not be an idiot. BTW...I am rich, but I am not a snob. Would stating that you were smart enough not to invest with Bernie Maddoff make you a snob? Of course not.

One of the signs that you are infected is that you cannot access microsoft - symantec & trendmicro etc...Sorry.

Mac users your day is coming. Hackers will not wast the time with them yet. Not because they are superior, but because they are not in most major businesses. Not even the US Army.

this morning my wife calls me and tells me that a pop up showed up on our home laptop indicating that our antivirus found something like "WIN32" after asking if she clicked anything she told me that she did click out "off" im wondering if by her clicking the box, would have caused our laptop to shut down, because according to my wife, that is what happened to our laptop, it shut down. Even with Live OneCare installed. Any help???

I for one am glad it didn't happen. I will be very aware of keeping everything up to date.

My hunch is that this is an April Fool's prank. Sort of like the "year 2000 glitch" that was supposedly going to shut the Internet down and disable all of the computers in the United States on Jan. 1, 2000. Nothing happened. You know, people after a while get tired of hearing others "cry wolf". I am running my free AVG anti-virus program on my laptop just in case, and will leave my computer off overnight later tonight, but I'm not going to stress about it. My bet is that this is another Internet urban legend, in spite of what this story says....
