A common refrain when I post about Windows security vulnerabilities like Conficker is "Get a Mac!" thanks to their long history of being comparatively secure next to Windows PCs.
Those days may be about to change. Already this year a handful of exploits that target the Mac platform have begun to trickle out. Now comes news that one of those attacks which infect MacOS computers exclusively continues to spread and has been at least moderately successful in forming a botnet, a network of computers that come under the control of a remote attacker, usually with the goal of creating a coordinated attack on other machines (or, for example, sending spam en masse).
The new network of infected machines is being called the iBotnet and is so far limited in its prevalence -- only a few thousand Macs are thought to be infected to date -- but as CNN notes, it's another ominous step toward the end of the Mac's free ride on the security train, as malicious hackers target the increasingly popular computing platform now that it's in use by a significant enough number of people to merit attention.
The botnet is being spread through pirated copies of the iWork application, the same mechanism I wrote about in January. But efforts to thwart the spread of the Trojan horse appear to have been stymied, as the botnet continues to rumble along. Apple says it is working to secure its machines from the attack (well of course it is...), but some are now starting to wonder whether the time is here for Mac users to consider installing security software, the kind of protection which is absolutely required on PCs these days.
Many of the Mac faithful say it's not yet mandatory, but I'm not so sure. Today's Mac malware may be relatively rare and largely innocuous, but that usually indicates that worse storms are on the horizon as hackers figure out how to take an idea and run with it. Better to protect yourself now before something truly awful makes headlines.
Should you install a Mac security application today? It might not be such a bad idea. And, some good news: at least one free anti-malware application is available for the Mac, too.

I have used PC's for years and have been satisfied with its performance in using word processing, spreadsheets, Photoshop as a professional photographer and web browsing (Firefox) I really like Windows XP. Perhaps if I used more of the other capabilities, e. g. music d/ls or movie editing I might encounter a problems, however I could care less for these apps. I have also used MACs in photo workshops and I thought they were ok. One year I taught a class to MAC users on OS 9. I discovered that they did not care for any references to PC (e.g. comparing 'folders' to 'directories') In analyzing their reasons, I found that they were purely emotional, not factual.
or how about we just don't download pirated software?....you can't shoot anything if you don't pick up the gun.....
Just keep on buying those PCs! :) Mac user
Most of the world is run by windows so why would a hacker waste his time with a mac? Well now that mac is gaining ground hackers realize that there is a demographic that they aren't exploiting. So now it's time to cash in just like a pc. Ta Da! Mac users are screwed too because they don't have virus protection software on their computers so when they get hacked it's all over. That's life. Criminals go where the money is and now mac is on the radar. I'm glad I use a pc and have virus protection. Plus my pc is faster more powerful and it was a lot cheaper too. Mac overpriced and now just another computer.
Mac's rule! This virus thing will pass
Maybe the sheeple (read: the 90% of people who own PC's and follow what everyone else says they should do - like sheep) should actually READ the article here and notice the most important word/phrase in it - "PIRATED copies of iWork". If those same sheeple unfortunately own Macs and are STUPID enough to d/l a PIRATED copy of ANYTHING, then they should get viruses/malware !!!!!
This is so dumb, the only way you can get this virus is if you download an illegal version of iWorks. Also it is only a trojan horse it can still be easily deleted. Only 7% of the computer using population own a mac so they are not going to be targeted as much as a pc. The media just likes to blow things out of proportion. (Proud Mac owner)
I have VirusBarrier X5 on my Mac OS since last yr.....
I would suspect that the attacks are a microsoft corperate attack against another company. They want it all. On world government with Obama as leader. Sieg Hail.
So, as long as I don't have a pirated copy of IWork, i'm safe?

Wow. it amazes me how many people don't grow up. If you want a REAL computer that will last 100x longer than any PC. Get a MAC!
Mac sucks - over rated
The reason why MACs aren't targeted right now is that they are a niche market for graphic designers, and students. There aren't as many MACs as PCs in the world. If there was a virus that targeted a MAC, it would be MUCH worse than a PC based virus since a MAC OS is relatively closed and a lot of boot code is based on EEPROM chips on the MAC motherboards. If a virus somehow got to the EEPROM and corrupted it, say goodbye to your MAC. MACs aren't more secure, they're less prevealant than PCs. If someone had a need, they could find a way and it would devistate a MAC.
the truth is that the people whose macs got infected were those who instead of purchasing productivity software, illegally downloaded them to their macs.
This is not even close to what you would call a virus. Unlike a PC which can be infected without user intervention, the "so called Mac worm" requires that a user installs an infected piece of software. If your using hacked warez, then thats a risk your taking.
They downloaded a pirated copy of I work, are you really that desperate that you had to download IWork, those people that got infected deserved it. Alot of people would not get infected on their PC'sor Macs if they just watched how they surfed or downloaded applications, music, etc.... Anyway most antivirus software doesn't really work. Why would Symantec ever want to get rid of the any viruses out there? Remember job security? If they can get rid of them then they lose their jobs.
If macs were cars, they would be fast, sexy and create zero pollution. Unfortunatly you could only drive them on 5% of the roads. being limited really sucks.
it's because PC's are so cheap; they are more fun to watch crash... I've had my Mac for the past three years and still is up and running, while my grandfather has had to buy a new PC almost every year since I've gotten the mac. Macs rock!!!

hmmm. mac to work and for jobs and i think pc to just chill. but either way they are both great computer programs in which both can be made better.
